Password required several times; power settings don't "take".

I have Vista Home Premium 32 bit running on my Dell Studio 1735 laptop.  Every time I leave my computer idle for as little as 10 minutes, I get the login screen requiring my password or fingerprint scan.  No matter how to set power, even options by specifying the display will never be turned off and the computer will never be put to sleep (and the application of these options), the computer requires I connect again if I use it actively for 10 minutes about.  What I am doing wrong?  I would like to log on once, when I initially turn on my computer for the day.  I don't have a question of privacy because I'm the only one at home with this computer; It is not shared with anyone.
