After many difficulties, I had a bootable CD and was able to start with the new drive in, and I started to reinstall XP. But halfway through, he started to say various files were missing, and the installation worked properly - XP starts to load, then a get a blue screen and error message.

  I think that cloning might be the question because the original configuration has been changed. Simple uninstall and reinstall again could possibly solve the problem as well...

  Install everything on the new motherboard, and then turn it on.  It should be like Windows Vista, it will take some time to sort itself, go online to get drivers etc (so ensure you have the new drivers for motherboard on hand like LAN, graphics etc. where it cannot find them online), but you shouldn't have to reinstall.  You will have to reactivate.
