Performance data store local vs fiber SAN disk IO

I'm looking for a table of comparison of performance or other documents that will give me the change in the performance of the disk i/o for virtual machines that are hosted on local data warehouses vs fiber attached LUN.

Does anyone know where I might be able to find this information?

(HA, DRS and VMotion are not at stake here).

Thank you.

You won't find that.  There is NO way to give a comparison that you are comparing apples and screwdrivers, they are not the same family.

SAN's storage shared, managed by a central unit full time on a fiber infrastructure.  But it depends on your switches fiber, HBA, your configuration, the disks in the SAN, the manufacturer of SAN, speed of the disks, the number of disks... It goes on and on.

Each SAN / fiber / Configuration is very different.

Local storage depends on the RAID configuration, manufacturer, your RAID card, disks... once again more info that can be included.  The line at the bottom is Local disk can be more responsive at times, but since you are limited to the number of disk (6 or 8) are limited to the performance, but the flow is the key.

You will get a FLOW much more fiber than the local disk.  More load, less stress (since he is not relying on the local system to provide the resources AND the host operating system).

SAS is better than SATA for the case of all VM on both systems.  so keep that in mind.  It is also very important to comparative analysis.  IOmeter will help you determine what is best for you.

  • vSphere - external USB drive to the data store local copy

    Hello world

Yesterday, I created this post: http://communities.VMware.com/message/2135813
With your help, we managed to find the only way to install ESXi to ISO image to USB external hard drive is to be attached to the machine near her and run the Setup from there, cannot be done directly.

Today, we need your help in the next step, as it seems.

We have a Dell r.620 physical machine with VMware ESXi 5.0 installed U1. We have an external hard drive with the operating system installation ISO images, software backup and a little more.

The question is - how to copy the data from the external USB connected directly to the ESXi host to the data store local disk on the host.

Yes, we know that we can do in the way that connect us to the machine on the same location and copy it into the data from there store. But we would do it directly. And we don't very well see by ourselves or using Google Uncle again.

Poor ability to research, or is not possible?

Thank you very much for your help!

The court to do is to use the Datastorebrowser or WinSCP

ESXi itself can only read the Fat16 drives - so what looks like the short path is the long way ;-)

  • What is the best way to backup of virtual machines on a standalone ESX with the data store local

    Hello

I want to save the virtual machines on a host ESX autonomous. and all of these virtual machines is the local data store.  What is the best way to save these virtual machines in this situation?

And probably we don't provision VTL on the local data center, so it is possible to use VCB to backup? And VCB is a good choice compared to the traditional method that installs the backup client in each virtual machine?   Because I think that in this situation with the data store local, it cannot not reduced the load on ESX hosts and network overhead can be avoided.

    Thank you!

    LAN

    > 1. VCB usable remote tape library? I mean it's not local library and uses the tape library to another network data center.

VCB is completely unrelated to the tape library, it is a framework, not a backup solution. If your standard backup software can work with the remote tape library you can try it to ungrateful with VCB.

    > 2. what the difference bwteen hot - added NBD and modes if there is that an ESX host with store data local and want to use a virtual machine like VCB proxy? I think that they are the same: the VCB proxy read data through the I/O of the ESX host stack in this situation.

NBD works on network and the backup traffic goes through the service console connection. Hot add uses special machine for assistance to connect vmdk to and uses of e/s disk stack instead of e/s network.

    > 3. Veeam Backup is free software?

    No, it isn't.

  • Storage vmotion to another data store on a different san

    Hello

We have a 3.5 ESX cluster running 4 host ESX and Virtual Center. The licensing is ESX Server standard edition. We are migrating to ESXi 4.1 vSphere and a new SAN. One of the issues that we are going through is because we are only in standard edition, we have no storage vmotion to migrate the virtual machines of data stores in the old SAN for data warehouses in the new San. Other than purchasing the add-on storage vmotion, what other options can I. I thought to add a new ESX 3.5 server to the cluster and make storage vmotion from this server while it is running trial license. I would probably need only a few days to storage vmotion on about 45 VMs. Please let me know if one were to do this or any other alternatives available.

  • [Performance] Data store Virtual disk LUN or a raw device

We try to find the solution the faster for one of our internal systems.

Currently, we have a data store that is located in a SAN iSCSI via a virtualdisk file.

Since we want to benefit the maximum of iSCSI SAN configuration, we want to know what solution is faster:

-Via the data as virtual disk (diskfile) store

-Via direct LUN mappingl (mapping RAW)

I searched the documents, but it is impossible to find the figures/numbers how much performance gain, we would be able to get.

Us don't use clichés (and do not use then as well), and what other pinpoints should I also everything by making the decision to change the architecture?

There may be some performance improvements, you can do in your env, but they come from VMDK of RDM.

  • ESXi 4: error in live migration (VMotion) to the different data store (Local SATA to iSCSI SAN)

    Hi all

I have a problem during VM migration live in the different data store, the specifications of the virtual machine is just Windows 2003 x 64 installed with the latest VMWare tools.

    Here is the error message:

    Move the virtual machine

    Win2003x64_RST01

A general error occurred: detected Source this destination could not resume.

The active state of VM migration

any idea what could cause this please?

    Kind regards

    AWT

Check that the machine ESX4 has prevention performance virtualization and data, indicators enabled in the BIOS. I could move 32 bit machines vmotion Unflagged VT turned on in the BIOS, but 64-bit machines could not begin until I activated the flag of VT in the BIOS.

Also try to clear the mask of the source of the VM CPU before migrating, providing the hosts have the same hardware.

  • alleged connection to the data store local preventing vmotion

I have a VM that signals a connection to the local data store on its host, and therefore can't do vMotion elsewhere.  The virtual machine has two virtual drives, which are both on a SAN storage.  The virtual machine has been previously connected to an ISO on the local data store, but it has since been replaced by client device.  He always insists that he's using something on this data store, however.  I've looked through the vmx file and don't see any reference to it.  I also tried to remove the data store, but he claims that the file system is in use.  The hosts have been recently updated to esxi 6.0 U2, and it's the only VM that now seems this behavior.  Any suggestions on what could be the cause?  It is a server important enough in this environment, and be locked into a single host makes me a little anxious.

Turns out it was because of an old cliché.  If you get an ISO from a data store and take a snapshot, the virtual machine will keep a link to that store of data even after changing the client machine.  As soon as you delete the snapshot, this relationship goes, and access to this database is therefore more a review when searching valid hosts.

  • Reconnect the data store after removal of hard disk

I have two identical Dell R610 servers.  I removed the readers of one of the servers and put them in the other.  ESX came very well and I can connect to the host with the vSphere client.  However, the data store has disappeared and 4 virtual machines that were on the server are "(inaccessible) unknown".  The device comes in storage.  It's a simple, 4 drive RAID5 set connected to the local controller inside the server.

What can I do to reattach the data store?

I tried both 'Keep the existing signature' and 'assign a new signature.  Both options produce the same result ' selected disk already Dad a VMFS datastore. ".  Select another disk.

The data store is obviously there and intact.

Sounds like the issue in the store of data missing and not mountable. You can also take a look at http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1015986 to see if that helps.

  • Error in creating data store Local VMFS 2.3 TB RAID - 5

    Hi all

I just reinstalled my ESXi 4.0u1, the local disk is configured as 6 x 500 GB SATA RAID - 5 altogether, it gives me 2.3 TB of disk capacity

However, when I am about to create VMFS Local data store on the ESXi server it was fll of error as the following attached photos:

can someone help me please in reconfiguring the VMFS 2 TB and 300 GB each?

    Thank you.

    Kind regards

    AWT

Maximum size of the LUN is a little less than 2 TB.  Re-create the matrix, with two LUNS that is two 1.15 TB, both RAID-5.  Create a data store on the first, then add the second as a measure.

Please give points for any helpful answer.

1 - Check the SSH configuration on both sides and compare... (/ etc/ssh/sshd_config)

The remote server will only accept v2 connections and you try to do

a connection v1. So either enable support of the v1 on the remote side. Or use

    keys v2 and id_rsa/id_dsa.

    2. check the versions ESX & patch level you used on both sides (ESX 3 xx build xxx)

3 - also, you can check ssh version of protocol running rpm - qa | grep openssh.

    Good luck!

  • Help with report VM (name MemoryMB NumCPU, data store, total size of the disk)

I currently have a script (listed below) to the CR of query for each virtual computer and their allocated disks. The problem with the script is that when he meets a VM with disks on several data only stores the first data store is listed in the report. However, the total size of the disk is correct.

    Any ideas to fix this?

    $datastoreExp = @{N = "Datastore"; E = {($_ | get-datastore | select-object-1 premier).} Name}}

    $diskSizeExp = @{N = "Total disk"; E = {($_ | get-harddisk | mesure-objet-propriété CapacityKB-somme).} Sum}}

    Get - vm | Select the name MemoryMB NUmCPU, $datastoreExp, $diskSizeExp | Sort - property datastore, "Total disc | Export-Csv C:\Scripts\Reports\chargeback.csv

I thought that was what you wanted, judging by your examples.

In any case, no problem, the following should do the trick.

    $dsRegEx = [regex]"\[(\w+)\]"
    $report = @()
    get-vm | % {
         $vm = $_
        $vm.HardDisks | %{
              $row = "" | Select Name,MemoryMB,NUmCPU, Datastore, "Total Disk (Gb)"
              $row.Name = $vm.Name
              $row.MemoryMb = $vm.MemoryMb
              $row.NumCpu = $vm.NumCpu
              $row.Datastore = $dsRegEx.Match($_.Filename).Groups[1].Value
              $row.{Total Disk (Gb)} = "{0:N}" -f ($_.CapacityKB / 1Mb)
              $report += $row
         }
    }
    $report | sort -property Name, datastore,"Total Disk" |Export-Csv "C:\chargeback.csv" -noTypeInformation

Since there are sometimes problems with the display of the hooks I have attached the script.

  • ESXI 6.0, problem of data store local ssd

    Hi all,

I have a desktop pc (HP Elite 8200), i7 cpu, 1 x 250 GB HARD drive, 1 x 240 GB SSD... (240 GB do datastore with name SSD), there, installed free VMware ESXI 6.0 on 250 GB HARD drive.

Yesterday to buy second SSD 240 GB, I want to increase datastore 'SSD' with the second disc, but the process is hang. No warning, no error... but can extend the data store. Trying to

create the new datastore with second SSD, but still hang processes. Maybe someone has a similar issue?

I try to change SATA cables - does not work for me, try to detach an SSD - works for me... Finally reinstall ESXI 6.0 U1 with ESXI 6.0 U2 - this work for me.

successfully create datastore with 2 x 240 GB Kingston SSD.

  • How can I move virtual machines from a local data store for a new iSCSI SAN?

    Hello guys,.

Now that we have a new iSCSI SAN market how can I tranfer all the virtual machine to a local data store for a new SAN? Can I stop the VM in the host, and then copy the DataStore files with all the info on the new volume?

    Thank you

Alternatively, you can use VMware converter or cold Migration / Storage VMotion if you have the appropriate licenses.

  • Kickstart: Local data store destroyed do not reinstall it

I noticed that when I reinstall ESXi 5 on a server already built, the previous local data store is not destroyed.

I said to make a 'install' and 'overwritevmfs '.

install - firstdisk = mptsas, local - overwritevmfs

in the upper part of the kickstart but the store of previous local data remains.

    I tried to use clearpart

    clearpart - alldrives - overwritevmfs

Yet the local data store of the previous generation, as well.

Part of my process of kickstart is to rename the store local data (datastore1) to a meaningful name that includes the hostname so if I reinstall, the data store rename fails (since there is no datastore1 on the 2nd install).  Also, I need to know the name of the data store, as I'm checking out the files ' / ' when installing (via oem.tgz) and move before the first reboot in the section post % (or they will be gone). The only persistent location is the local data store. This also effects kickstart for resettlement syslog that goes to the local data store as well.

Suggestions on how do I delete a data store local existing during the installation (unless you delete the RAID and re-create)?
