• is this what can I do with oracle?

  One of our accident databases due to the failure of the drive.   I'm a DBA/PLSQL developer for a small project on a small database. We were recently asked if we could do the following, inside an Oracle PL/SQL procedure:
  
  * Given a lat/lon, find the center closest to the population
  
  I am brand new to Oracle Spatial and am scouring the Oracle Spatial information on the Oracle web site. I'm learning tons of new things... but I've not seen many examples of code or examples of applications. I understand that Oracle "Locator" is delivered with Oracle DB, so I already have this installed - so I can use it?
  
  #1) can I search the name of city of lat/lon with Oracle Locator or do I have to tell my boss that we must concede the true Oracle Spatial?
  (#2) someone at - it a simple PL/SQL procedure or something that can take a lat/lon and find the city nearest? Is this even possible, without loading a ton of additional information cards / superimposed and other things? I'm really confused as to what the Oracle Locator of out-of-the-box 'maps', or which include... the PDF Locator said it comes with a 'whole earth geometry model', but I don't know exactly what this means. I'm going to guess the name of the city might be there, but people in the city are not (?)
  
  I have access to Metalink too, so feel free to point me to the Oracle documentation and other things, if there is.

  Out of the box, Oracle Locator does not come with any data. SDO_GEOMETRY is just another type of data, and Locator gives you the ability to index data SDO_GEOMETRY and run operators on data.

  Absolutely, base location based applications run well on Locator and did not need the extra features of real Oracle Spatial.

  Well you need some data. If I asked you to write a stored procedure that takes a customer code and returns the details of the customer, you expect for there to be a Customers table somewhere. Similarly, you will need a table "Population Center" If you want to request, where is the nearest Population Center.

  Is not referring to the data. Geometry whole earth model means that you can run queries that respects the fact that the Earth is not flat when calculating of distance/area etc.

  Yes the type of query, you're going to run probably work on the release of all the > 9.0.1.

  Note that in Oracle Locator/Spatial, you need to store the data in longitude and latitude, and not the opposite... common mistake.

  I'm trying to get Oracle Application Express Listener to run using Oracle for J2EE (OC4J) containers. As I was doing this, I noticed that the option Oracle Containers that I try to use would not actually work with APEX, so I need to know if he can or cannot be used. Also, I try to get the Oracle Containers 'oc4j' command works, and I can't do that because I need to set JAVA_HOME and ORACLE_HOME, but I don't know how.

  I let the ORACLE_HOME variable systemic intact (i.e. on the value of the database) and set the local value for the variable in the script to start for the OC4J. So if you use oc4j.cmd, you could put a whole script, like start_oc4j.cmd which could look like this:

  SET JAVA_HOME=C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_26
  SET ORACLE_HOME=D:\oracle\oc4j_extended_101350
  "%ORACLE_HOME%"\bin\oc4j.cmd -start
  

  And you can start your OC4J with this script wrapper without disturbing the system wide ORACLE_HOME.

• Dataware house with Oracle or distributed computing

  When I spoke with guys in some large corporations on the DW (ETL in particular), each of them said they like it distribution with Hadoop or hive than Oracle.
  
  When they were given huge daily for treatment (say n TB), Oracle or rational of the database cannot work very well.
  
  I have just an experience of project of DW, which has been implemented with PL/SQL and Shell purely and works well, at least from my point of view.

  It seems that Hadoop has currently no chance against RDBMS (region of the DWH)...

  In my opnion, Hadoop/hive is a technology and not a solution for the problem with Hadoop/hive, you will need to do a lot of work.

• Advantage of the portfolio after the migration to HSM with Oracle 11.2.0.1.0

  I found this integration for Utimaco Cryptoserver guide: http://hsm.utimaco.com/solutions/db-encryption/ and now I wonder if it is necessary to keep the original portfolio after the migration of HSM with Oracle 11.2.0.1.0. As I understand it, eventually all the necessary keys are stored in HSM. Is still used portfolio in a way or is it possible to reuse maybe after you set the METHOD to FILE sqlnet.ora?

  If you used the Wallet before Oracle, then migrate the master key of TDE from there to an HSM is a renewal of key operation; the keys of the table (for the TDE column encryption), and tablespace (for TDE tablespace encryption) key is decrypted with the old key in the portfolio) and encrypted again with the new MK unified (in the HSM).

  Your RMAN backup files, export files Data Pump and same 'live' in the redo logs, TEMP and UNDO tablespace can be encrypted with the old MK in the wallet, that's why we NEVER delete the portfolio.

  Of course, the Oracle database automatically knows what MK he needs.

• 11G Pivot query with Oracle EBS

  We try to use the request function pivot 11G with Oracle E-Business Suite data. We have a database 11G installed with our Oracle APEX. We do not seem to get the pivot function to work. In short, anyone would be able to see the glaring errors in our syntax. I am not sure that it is possible to provide data of test so...
  
  We try to have with the period column headers names SEP-08 OCT-08 NOV-08, with rows of segment2 007751 and accounted_dr as DataSet.
  When we run the sql code we get an error ORA-00904: "PERIOD_NAME": invalid identifier.
  
  Any help or idea would be greatly appreciated.

  Do not use GROUP BY. When you use PIVOT, the group is involved with what is in the PIVOT clause and which is not.
  Try this:

  which is just your query validated without the GROUP BY clause.
