PowerEdge 2950 advanced settings recommended virtual disk group

Hey guys, I was hoping that someone out there has had some information about the nature best practices or the best settings for these two configurations of a Dell 2950 with PERC 5 controller / i.

Senario 1

Reference Dell 2950 Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition 32-BIT

RAID 5 (5 TB) hardware RAID & Windows dynamic disk Configuration

PERC 5 / i with battery

Group of virtual disk current avancΘs

Virtual disk 0 - Adaptive Read Ahead and Write Back

Virtual disk 1 - Adaptive Read Ahead and Write Back

Senario 2

Reference Dell 2950 Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition 32-BIT

RAID 5 (5 TB) hardware RAID & Windows dynamic disk Configuration

PERC 5 / i with battery

Group of virtual disk current avancΘs

Virtual disk 0 - Adaptive Read Ahead & direct writing

Virtual disk 1 - Adaptive Read Ahead & direct writing

The second server now has a battery that has failed and we are on the way. I want to add that I just found out that a bad or dead battery kills performance on the server reading and the writing speed. After replacing the battery on the first server, I saw performance increase by at least 300% if it is longer. So this lead me to read a lot of posts by others, but I couldn't find a solid peg that indicates what should be the best configuration. So my questions are... What is the best configuration for Virtual Disk Group advanced settings for MY servers above WITH a controller battery? Finally, what happens if I didn't use the battery which is recommended then? Is it better to use a battery or be without one? Bottom line is that I best performance of reading and writing, thank you to you all!

300% is too much of a performance increase to attribute entirely to the write cache is enabled, even if it makes a significant difference.  When the battery goes bad, the controller disables the write cache, and it is the source of the performance difference.  Unless you have a specific reason to disable the cache (and I see no good reason), it must be enabled.  You can not force the controller to use memory cache without battery, not to mention that it's dangerous for your data to use the cache without battery.

"Bottom line is that I the highest performance for reading and writing, thank you to you all!

Bottom line... turn write cache (write back) and replace the batteries when needed (which should not be often).

  • VMware ESXi 4 on Dell PowerEdge 2950 CDROM missing in virtual machines

    Hi all

I installed VMware 4.0 on my Dell PowerEdge 2950, and everything moved very well. I had the ISO image from the support site on the website of VMware and Dell. I installed both with the same problem, once installed, the CD-ROM will not be displayed in any virtual machine, I create.

I changed the boot parameters, the order of the boot, played with the BIOS settings, and no matter what I do, when I start the virtual machine and open a console window and try to connect on the CDROM, a message displays saying that the device is disconnected.

I have reinstalled Windows on the box, went to the site of support of Dell and applied each update BIOS patch and firmware of the box. Including the one for the TEAC CDROM, which is in my box.

Anyone had this problem before? If so, how should I do? I really need this works quickly. Without a CDROM, I can't install software such as SQL Server and others.

    Kind regards

    Michael Lange

I assume that you have added a CDROm for virtual machines?

You then specify "logged in/connected to the power on" in the settings of VM page? (I know it's usually obvious.. .but I did it very mistaken once this week.. .accidentally added the CDROM to the VM wrong.)

What OS your virtual machine is running and you have the installed VMTools?

If issuing a VMtools install on a windows host, it works, then the Cd drive works as ESX uses the virtual CD Rom to install the tools.

  • Single controller RAID, LUNs, virtual disk groups question does?

    Hi VMware Experts.

I have 5 servers (each at full load with local SSDS 8 x 1 TB).

    I'm curious:

    1. If I configure raid 5 (I'll have 6 TB per host), how many LUNS / data warehouses should create? Is it important here? In any case, we still have controller raid just unique, right?
    2. If I use VSANS, is there a difference in the answer above? A data store for each host is probably correct? Or because the VSAN configuration: raid0 /passthrough better to create several data warehouses/LUN?
    3. Insights into the performance here?

    Thank you!

    1. Yes, it is ok, because you have no other choice.

    2. you can't do several stores data vsan. A single vsan by cluster data store is possible.

No matter how many ssd\hdd for each host that you have.

  • S130 rebuild with 2 virtual disks on the same disk array

    Hi all

    I have 6 drives 750 GB sata in raid 10 with a s130 controller.

There is a 100 GB virtual disk and a virtual disk of 2 TB.

One of the drives has failed, so I replaced it with a new drive.

I have assigned the new disc on the first virtual disk, and this re-built very well. But he'll also let me assign the remaining space on the new disk on the second virtual drive in the table, it is said that there is no available free disk?

    What can I do here?

    Thank you

    Hi NET1K

It seems that the hard drive that is not in the disk of your virtual disk group 2 (VD).

You may need to put the reader that you have assigned to rebuild the first VD and assign it as a global hot spare to rebuild your disk, instead of virtual disk group offline.

Before doing the procedure reversed, please backup you made recent data.

  • Reference Dell MD3000 virtual disk

I have an environment to both nodes of ESX 4.0 and a shared storage (Dell MD3000, no iSCSI).

On storage, I have 10 at 10K SAS drives.

Virtual disk how I need to build? A two bigger or smaller?

    Thank you

    Max

It is not a simple answer, because it depends on:

    • Good storage practices

    • Storage type and the type of disks

    • VM number, size and type of e/s

    • Max VM and e/s per LUN

    • Size Max LUN (less than 2 to - 512 b)

In your case, with 10 discs and two nodes and storage running in active-passive mode, you can create 2 virtual disks.

Create 2 different groups of RAID5 (also think about using 1 disk as a global hot spare) and in each virtual disk group build 1 (or more if the size is more than 2 TB - 512b).

If you have a few VMS with high IO think also to use use 4 disks in RAID10 instead of RAID5 configuration.

  • PowerEdge 2950. Need advice to add 1 TB SATA disk.

    This is my first post.

I have a PowerEdge 2950 with PERC 5 / i.  The firmware version is 5.2.2 - 0072.   Configuring PERC controller 0 shows.   0 to 2 physical disks in SAS controller.  2 physical disks are used to create a virtual drive.  The virtual drive is used as the C: drive.  Readers of the excellent work.

I want to add a 1 TB SATA drive which will act as a stand alone D: drive.  I had planned to add the SATA controller drive 1, but when I run the PERC configuration utility, I don't see a setting 1.

What should I do to add a 1 TB SATA drive?

    Looks very good.

  • Reference Dell HDS - recommended VMware virtual disk - drives provided - basic and dynamic thin and thick.

Can someone point me to the literature on best practices for guest disc formats?

I know all the Compellent thin-provisions. However, in VMware 5.5, when you set up a virtual disk in the comments you have several choices:

    • Lazy provisioned to zero thickness
    • Eager provisioned to zero thickness
    • Provision of thin

And then, at the level of the OS, you have the choice of:

    • Base
    • Dynamics

I would like a pointer to the technical document explaining the advantages/disadvantages of each choice and recommended best practices.

    Kind regards

    Kath

I would like to either thin or thick lazy to zero.  The two will take the same amount of data on the HDS.  The main decision is where you want to manage your storage space?  If dilute you on thin you need to make sure that you make no provision in both places.  If you have thick lazy to zero, then you can only on commissioning on one side.

Say that I always thin on thin.  Recovery of the space at the level of the virtual computer is not officially supported immediately, but maybe someday.

In a virtualized environment, always keep it simple.  There is no dynamic performance with virtualization

  • HARD disk for maximum support PowerEdge 2950

    Greetings,

I have server PowerEdge 2950 with Six internal hard drive bays. How many maximum capacity of hard drive taken in charge in one Bay?

Thanks for the reply and best regards.

If you use a PERC 5/6, 2 TB is the maximum size of physical disks - this is a hardware limitation, and there is no way to use anything larger than 2 TB.

If you use a SAS 5/6 in RAID mode, 2 TB is the maximum - it is a limitation of its limitation of RAID. I would never do that, but some said that grows to 2 TB will work on the SAS 5/6 in NON RAID (left unconfigured) mode.

  • Try the list of virtual machines by NetworkName, then add advanced settings

    Hello

I'm trying to connect to a host (not a vCenter), list the virtual machines, select the different networks of those in two, then apply two advanced settings for the virtual machine.

    So far, I have this:

    $vms = get - VM

    SE connect-VIServer $esxi - user $user-password $pass

    {foreach ($vm to $vms)

    If (Get-NetworkAdapter - vm $vm.name |?) {{$_.NetworkName - eq "VLAN70"})}

    New-AdvancedSetting $vm - isolation.tools.copy.disable name-set to false - confirm: $false - Force: $true

    New-AdvancedSetting $vm - isolation.tools.paste.disable name-set to false - confirm: $false - Force: $true

    }

    }

    Disconnect-VIServer $esxi - confirm: $false

First of all, how I add a second network to verify - if 'VLAN70' or 'VLAN80 '?

Secondly, there is a smarter way of writing this script?  I'm doors beginning with PowerCLI, but I think even my grandmother could write a better version...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated,

    -virtualhobbit

I see, so you could do something like this

    $tgtVLAN = "VLAN80", "VLAN80", "VLAN90".

    SE connect-VIServer $esxi - user $user-password $pass

    Get - VM |

    where {(Get-NetworkAdapter-VM $_ | % {$tgtVLAN-contient $_.NetworkName}) - contains $true} | %{

    New-AdvancedSetting $_ - isolation.tools.copy.disable name-set to false - confirm: $false - Force: $true

    New-AdvancedSetting $_ - isolation.tools.paste.disable name-set to false - confirm: $false - Force: $true

    }

    Disconnect-VIServer $esxi - confirm: $false

    foreach ($vm in (Get-View - ViewType VirtualMachine - property Name, Config.ExtraConfig - filter @{'Config.Template ' =' False'})) {}

    $vm. Config.ExtraConfig | where {$_.} Key - like "{scsi * sharing '} |"

  • PowerEdge R720 virtual disk question

Hi, our company has bought a Dell PowerEdge R720. I tried to use the lifecycle controller in RAID configuration. At the start, it has 3 500 GB SAS HARD drive, but I ordered 2 x 320 GB additional SAS being what I intend to do it, use the 2 x 320 GB like OS install as RAID 1 and RAID 5 on the default 3 x 500 GB, but for some reason any, whenever I have configure RAID , either on the two 320 or 3 x 500 GB, it shows just a virtual disk, 2 x 320 GB or 500 GB x 3, I see not two for RAID 1 and RAID 5 virtual disks. Am I missing something here? or I have to perform an extra step?

    Kind regards

    Jeff

    Hello Jeff,.

If you try to install the operating system through the lifecycle controller method. You must have the latest lifecycle controller OS driver pack installed in your system. For the latest driver pack OS, please download from our support http://support.dell.com/ site by entering you service number and download OS Driver pack drivers.

You can update the OS driver pack thorugh iDRAC GUI or through the lifecycle controller GUI and once after the OS driver pack update. When you try to deploy the operating system through the life cycle of the controller, you will appear on the list of supported operating systems and you can select the operating system you want to install by mounting the image operating system or DVD media connected to the system.

Please let me know if you have any question.

    Thanks, Neeraj

  • MD3000 cannot change virtual disk ownership / preffered path - ERROR 29

    Current configuration

PowerVault MD3000 (deleted by the moderator) - attached to two servers PowerEdge R610 using Dell SAS 5/e card in each r610. The R610s act as a host ESX VMWare ESXi 5.5.0

We have created multiple LUNS on the storage array and noticed that traffice all happening through a RAID controller or another module (and it seems to me not change without prompting when you look at the storage Bay). I turned off a two different virtual machines to try to change the path and had an error with a certain delay - I stuck this error below. I also tried to redistribute virtual disks tab the MDSM software nothing works support.

By reading, it seems that the LUN should be attributed to a particular raid controller before all I / 0, but I still feel like're missing us something as to why we cannot distribute the traffic properly.

    Hello MrRedPants,

Since you are using a configuration not redundant you will have problems trying to modify the paths between the controllers since the two hosts have only a single connection to the MD3000.  What you could do if possible is to get 2 more SAS cables & connect ports second on the MD to RAID opposite that the host is currently connected to.

Now, if this isn't an option so that you can make is to have 2 disk groups and assign the virtual disks / LUNS that are connected to each host in their own disk group.  If you go to each host their own groups of disks, then you will need to stop the e/s as you move the Ramdisk to the new group of disks so that you want to discard any data loss.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.
