  512 MB Ram really is too little to run Vista.  Your profile says your machine can have up to 4 GB of Ram.  You really should have at least 1 GB, and 2-3 GB would be really better.

  As to be able to change your processor, I don't know the answer for your model, but often the CPU is soldered to the motherboard in laptops.  Even if it could be changed you would be limited by the specifications of your card mother and bios.  You also have to take into account any eventual increase output heat that may result.

  I know that I can add 1 G more RAM for my HP dv6000 laptop which currently has 1 gig of RAM for a total of 2 G.  But since I upgraded the OS from Vista to Windows 7 with SP1 64-bit, clocked at 1.6 ghz, do I add even more to reach a total of 3 G or 4 G?   It seems that the limiting factor is the speed of 1.6 ghz.

  Yes of course. However, it may require a fresh install of Windows on the new SSD. Origin of the hard disks on computers laptops HP are larger that the SSDS and a factory reset can end with a lot of mistakes because the ssd is not large enough to manage the restoration to the original state.
