  After spending some time trying to get the orinter work I can now see that, although the upper paper rolls 'transfer' work in rolls 'drop down' inserting the paper from the bin are not.  I guess the paper jam broke the roller mechanism and a new printer is necessary?

  It doesn't sound like it needs to be repaired/replaced with what you described. If it is still under warranty, I recommend to contact HP support for options.

  More than likely your MBP has a hardware problem that cannot be properly addressed at an Apple store genius bar.

  You can try to reinstall an OSX, but I doubt if that will be successful.

  I have a HP photosmart 8250 which had a paper jam, and then I got an error message that says the print carriage was stuck and deserved to be deleted. I set myself with the help of HP printed tips on this Web site. But now, with a test print, it shows cyan streaks a horizonal while all other colors are OK. These horizonal trails in cyan cause photos to be striped. I put in a new cyan cartridge, and it's the same horizontal sreaks in images.   I already reported this, my color cyan in HP Photosmart 8250 printer was streaked in my page series of tests, and the images are out streaked.   When the computer tells you that the printer is in paper that means you have a problem of communication between the printer and the computer.  I guess that the printer is connected to the network and is loaded on the computer using the standard tcp/ip Protocol.  If this is the case, go to the reports menu on the printer and print a config page or a Network Setup page and look at the specified ip address.  Sometimes printers are losing the manual adjustment that was made years before and return to dhcp and find a new IP, preventing local computers to print to it.  To see if you can communicate with the printer on the network, simply type the printer ip address in your web browser on the computer.  You should get a web page.  If you have not, there is a problem with your connection to the network, cable or spending issues.  Reset the printer and see if he can find a new ip address, if this is the case.  Also, check the lights in the back where the ethernet cable is connected.  There should be flashing green and yellow lights.  If no light there is a problem with the cable, the network, or the printer port.  Whatever he says, most of the time when you have a problem where you get the out of paper message it occurs when the printer is connected locally to a pc via a usb cable and if that is the case, you should check this link and communication between this computer and the printer and if shared between the shared computer and reset the network.
