Problem of storage Vmotion, what to check?

In the last 36 hours, I managed virtual machines SVMotioned 195 exhausted almost 9 TB using plugin Victual Center Schley Andrew Kutz.

So far, everything seems to have worked perfectly with the exception of two virtual machines.  For some reason any when I right click on my other two VM, the storage option migrate is grayed out.

Are the VMotionable virtual machine between the host, they have their VMTools up to date, is using RAW disks and no or diskette CD-ROM drives connected.

Are machine virtual Windows 2003 with Citrix installed, however, my other servers Windows 2003 Citrix 8 SVMotioned without and questions.

If anyone has experienced this?

You can svmotion them (or at least get some more clues about why they can't be svmotioned) using RCLI and svmotion.pl? Use it with the option - interactive isn't too bad...

  • Storage vMotion-Direct between ESXi hosts

    Hi all

It is my first time on the boards, I hope it's the right way to go on this subject.

I have problems with Storage vMotion, it's not a set up us would use normally, rather than by necessity with the current scenario.

We have a desktop which has 2 x 5.1 ESXi hosts. They do not have a budget for SAN with the installation of HBA, and it is only a single requirement. I have to migrate virtual machines from one to the other, but with no external storage. I wait with Storage vMotion directly from a local data store to another.

I activated the software iSCSI on both ESXi hosts

Created a vSwitch separated with a VMkernal on two physical hosts

The two VMkernals are on a separate subnet * 172.16.1 and production vSwitch is 192.168.5. *.

The NIC allocated for the 172.16.1 network. * is both connected to the same physical switch.

I ping the VMkernal and the vmkping the VMkernal

Scan for storage again and nothing shows up.

I used software iSCSI before, for a long time so I'm probably rusty. Dynamic discovery is normally indicated in the SAN to pick up storage, and finds it just local storage on each host itself.

In this scenario, I told the IP address of the ESX2 VMkernal on 172.16.1 ESX1. * since I have no external storage. I think it is, I'm wrong, but I don't know what else to do to recover local data warehouses.

Any ideas to try would be very appreciated.

    Thank you

  • Storage vmotion to another data store on a different san

    Hello

We have a 3.5 ESX cluster running 4 host ESX and Virtual Center. The licensing is ESX Server standard edition. We are migrating to ESXi 4.1 vSphere and a new SAN. One of the issues that we are going through is because we are only in standard edition, we have no storage vmotion to migrate the virtual machines of data stores in the old SAN for data warehouses in the new San. Other than purchasing the add-on storage vmotion, what other options can I. I thought to add a new ESX 3.5 server to the cluster and make storage vmotion from this server while it is running trial license. I would probably need only a few days to storage vmotion on about 45 VMs. Please let me know if one were to do this or any other alternatives available.

OK, that explains my question from above, must have been validated as I wrote.

What you need to do to be able to get through your desired interfaces iSCSI traffic is to have at least the different IP subnets. Different VLAN is also highly recommended, but not technically necessary, however a best practice for several reasons.

So, basically, set the IP on the SAN iSCSI target some address a different IP subnet, set in place the VMkernel interfaces on the host with IP on the same subnet. Make sure that the Vmkernels is connected to one the VMNIC you want, which is not the same as your network management on VMNIC0.

Start with that and make sure it works, then you might look at the mulitpathing / iSCSI binding.

  • Storage VMotion and what it actually does?

    Hello

I recently started to use the VM to my new company and I am migrating various VM out of ESX host for them (level 4 of ESX 3.5 Patch) patch.

Now, I met my first VM installed on a local storage on an ESX host. I understand that I must use Storage VMotion to migrate this and that there is a plug-in that allows you to do so (SVMotion VI-Client Plugin). I also read the prerequisites for Storage VMotion Administrator's guide and I covered.

However, I do not entirely understand, what this process done. On an online resource that I found it says the following "However, with SVMotion the VM guest stays on the server it resides on but the Ramdisk that VM is what is happening."  Now, if I need to restart this ESX host is that this goes to the impact of this machine virtual comments?

I do not understand what this distinction between 'Comments' and 'VM virtual disk' would mean in terms of impact on the system for the service providing VMS.

    Notice to lovers?

    Tom

Storage VMotion allows you to migrate pwered VM transparently to end users. But you can always turn off the virtual machine and migrate to another data store.

  • flying over the vmdk files after storage vmotion

    People,

I finished a few vmotions storage and I see that there are some vmdk files left belonging to a virtual machine by flying over in the source data store.

Storage vmotion however was very good. Time last modified files are several months old.

If the vmdk files are old players was dismantled some time back?

There are also a few - zdump.000 left side files in source data warehouses. should you be worried about those?

    Rahul-

Although I suppose the files are orphans, I always double-check for use before deleting. Virtual disk file (hard) can be changed only in case Active snapshots exist for them. What you can do is run RVTools, to see if these files appear as 'Zombies' and if so, I would say you first create a subdirectory and move the "orphans" files above and - if everything continues to work as expected - delete at a later date. Alternatively you can check the vmware.log of the virtual machine file to see if the files appear here.

Zdump files are created if something unexpected occurs. However, it is difficult to say what the brought to be created and if they are old and have any problems, you can delete just them.

  • Random virtual machines after vMotion and Storage vMotion network loss

    Hi all -

I have a couple of tickets open with VMware and our supplier of SAN, EqualLogic, on this issue.  Since the configuration of our production and DMZ clusters we noticed that the virtual machines will sometimes drop network connectivity after a successful vMotion and Storage vMotion.  Sometimes, although much less frequently, virtual machines also spontaneously lose network overnight.  What happened only a few times.  The strange thing is that the other guests on the VM host are fine - they lose any network.  Actually, I can do no more than 3 computers virtual host to another, and 2 of 3 can switch correctly, so that we lose the network.  The work around?  Simply 'disconnect' from the virtual NETWORK card 'reconnect' and the virtual machine will start the return packets.  I can also switch the VM troubled return to the host State and it will find the network.  I can it reboot and re - win network.  I can re - install the virtual card completely, and she re - win network.

VMware has seen a lot of mistakes of SAN in our log files in order to update us our SAN firmware to the latest version.  That seems to have fixed that but we still have the issue.  Here are some of the specifications - all environments are virtually identical except for memory:

    Of PowerEdge R810

    NICs Broadcom 5709

    EqualLogic SAN running 5.0.5 F/W

We use frames.  ESXi is fully patched.  I haven't seen a boss or not, it is only some guest operating system that loses the network, but we are a Windows environment.

When a virtual machine loses the network, we can not:

    • Ping to it
    • Ping it
    • Ping him at the virtual machines on the same host or vSwitch
    • Ping outside our network
    • resolve DNS, etc..

I followed some KBs VMware without success, including:

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1003839
http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC & externalId = 1002811 (port security is not enabled)

-All the VMware tools have been updated to the latest version correct and corresponds to the ESXi host
-Connected to the service ESXi console, I cannot ping the VM problem by name of host or IP address, but I can ping do not affected by the issue of the OTHER virtual machines.  I can also pings the service console.
-Connected to the troubled virtual machine itself, I cannot ping other virtual machines, I can't resolve host names, I cannot ping by IP.  The machine virtual CAN ping itself by IP, but not hostname.  I cannot ping other virtual computers on the same virtual switch or network by either IP or host name.  I can't ping the vSwitch network management.
-All vSwitches are configured in the same way and the same.
-Notify the switches is set to yes
-There are a lot of available virtual ports
-We tried the E1000 and VMXNET virtual cards with no difference.
-All cards are configured to negotiate, but we tried to force individuals speeds as well as with no difference

I appreciate your help.  I have problems getting anywhere on this issue with the sellers.

    wkucardinal wrote:

    Still having the issue...

Sometimes, it might be useful to really check that all uplinks VMNIC for all VLAN does work them. Try this is to create a new portgroup on the vSwitch used by your virtual machines on the host of the first, put a test VM on the portgroup, then go into the NIC teaming policy from the new portgroup and select "Override switch command failover."

Then down vmnic all except one in unused, then only a single VMNIC is active. Then set the portgroup VLAN to a production of VLAN and try to see if we could ping some expected from the different addresses. If it works, then move VMNIC work until unused and move up to another asset. Try again, and this for all the vmnic. If it works, then you have verified that the configuration of VLANS and other settings are correct on the physical switch in the face of this host ports.

If several VLANs, repeat the process for all other productions VLAN. Then repeat on the other hosts.

While that may take some time, occurs if everything is properly configured on the physical switches. When occurs a vMotion virtual machine gets a new "Port code" and is assigned to a new outgoing VMNIC. If there is an error of configuration on one or more physical ports that might seem random, but may still happen on VLAN x on y VMNIC. Given that Port ID policy you use indeed spread randomly VMs on the vmnic these problems may be difficult to diagnose. (Make a disconnection of the VM vNIC gives the virtual machine a new port-ID, which it will move to a new outgoing VMNIC, which might seem to solve the problem.)

  • Storage vmotion, leaving something behind

    Hello

I have a little problem with vsphere storage vmotion.

I test vsphere storage vmotion, and I discovered that it somehow

always leave something on the old data store.

The virtual machine I'm currently move is called "MSCS1" has 1 disk of 10 GB.

I'm trying to migrate storage of this virtual machine from a data store called ESXDATASTORE1 in another data store called ESXDATASTORE2

Then the control where the virtual machine files are currently stored nuer the Summary tab,

She states that this VM is on ESXDATASTORE1.

I decided to go this virtual machine storage ESXDATASTORE2:

I choose the option "change datastore.

    I select ESXDATASTORE2 as destination

In the advanced options I select also datastore ESXDATASTORE2 as the destination for the "configuration file".

    and for "disk 1".

For the disc format, I select "same as source format".

When the storage vmotion ends, however,

    I have the following problem:

In the summary of vm Properties tab.

When I check on what data store, the virtual machine is rightnow,

He says that he now has data on two data warehouses:

    ESXDATASTORE1 and ESXDATASTORE2.

However, when I browse datastore ESXDATASTORE1.

It seems to be that nothing of VM "MSCS1" there, the 'MSCS1' file is missing.

When I browse ESXDATASTORE2, all files in VM MSCS1 seem to be there.

Does anyone have an idea what this virtual machine data are to stay behind on ESXDATASTORE1 and where?

Why the information in the show of the Summary tab that the data in the MSCS2 VM are now on 2 data warehouses?

    is this a bug?

If I would delete datastore ESXDATASTORE1 now

VM MSCS1 should always be working?

    Anyone who encountered this?

Is this some sort of bug?

Or I'm just something wrong here?

Take a look at the parameters of the virtual machine.

There could be a reference to the former datasore, for example an ISO attachment on the CDROM drive...

  • Storage vMotion with Syncrep on Equallogic San

    Hello

We recently bought 2 San Equallogic (PS6510ES) and turned on synchronous replication between them.

We use ESXi 5.5 and followed the best practices guide to disable TCP ack and 60 logintimeout value.

Everything seems to work fine until we tried Storage vMotion/migration and cloning VMS on the San.

When we did the migration of 2 volumes on the EQL SAN storage (the target volume has active syncrep), the target volume will be out-of-sync and then the storage vMotion will hang sometimes.

The worst is when such a problem has occurred, all other volumes on the EQL constantly to respond also. All volumes will not respond until we rebooted the corresponding ESXi host (NOTE: simple shut down/power outside the host won't help.) The San EQL will only return to normal after a reboot of the ESXi host).

If we pause / off the syncrep before Storage vMotion, the problem will not happen.

    Is this normal or not?

In addition, whenever the problem occurred, the latency of writing the corresponding volume will be dry and we will receive alerts similar to the following:

    connection iSCSI target ' xx.xx.xx.xx:3260, iqn.2001 - 05.com.equallogic:xxxxx - test-volume ' initiator 'xx.xx.xx.xx:xxxxx, eqlinitiatorsyncrep' failed for the following reason:

Initiator, disconnected from the target when connecting.

    Thanks in advance.

  • There is a problem of storage with the data path [path to hard] store

I have two sites connected by using a VPN connection over a WAN link. In each site, I have an esxi with several VMS host and operation of replication device of vSphere (v 5.1.1.0 Build 1079383) in each site. In each site, these is also a vCenter server with the device of RVS registered and logged with the other site. All the virtual machines are configured to replicate to the other site.

In my initial configuration of the RV (first install) site remote had 2 vNIC used for the management and I figured it was my problem with replication (see kb2040302). So I have changed since my host configuration from the remote site to have that single vnic management (does not solve the problem). I then registered, removed and reinstalled the VR device without change to the problem.

    What is going on:

    1. I am able to configure replication between sites without a problem.

    2. first replication occurs between sites and reports a success.

    3. the remote VM replication to the main site continue to work properly and all is well for the days and continue to work.

    4. the main site of VM replication to the remote site fails on the second and all attempts to reproduce the error. There is a problem of storage with datastore path '[datastorename] '.

    ReplicationError.JPG

I followed the advice of kb2040302 better as I can. But I must confess that I could use some of the more detailed instructions on how and what site should I check the logs. and how to check my configuration management vnic.

I'm looking for someone provide additional troubleshooting steps with good detail.

    Thank you

    Resolution:

The problem was caused by a security setting on the NFS Server data store. VRA could not delete the (hard).

Specifically, my problem was with authorizations on the Synology NAS under the application of the "file Station.

I find myself being unclear about what integration VĂII means and how to activate it, and I'm not sure when / if and under what circumstances one table will perform most of the work of a storage vmotion.

in this scenario, VAAI cannot do much, since the soruce LUN and target are on different storages. For the improvement of VAAI both source and target storage vmotion LUN must be on the same storage which is compatible VAAI.

Side table we don't need to do much. Just check with the seller to array storage OS is compatible VAAI and his default license.

On the side of the host, VAAI is enabled by default.

To determine if VAAI is enabled by using the vSphere Client.

    1. In the vSphere Client inventory Panel, click on the host.
    2. Click the Configuration tab, and then click Advanced settings under software.
    3. Make sure these options are set to 1 (enabled):

      DataMover.HardwareAcceleratedMove
      DataMover.HardwareAcceleratedInit
      VMFS3.HardwareAcceleratedLocking

Consult the above KB to enable VAAI if this is not enabled by chance.
