  Hello BYFIELD, welcome.

  I recommend trying a clean boot to see if maybe parts of the Live Essentials are running in the background. Try this:
  1. click on START

  2 type "msconfig" (without the quotes) and press enter

  3. go to the "Startup" tab and uncheck all the entries displayed

  4. click on 'Apply' at the bottom right

  5 restart your computer
  Then try to update of Live Messenger. If this does not resolve the problem, try to force - remove the application by Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (WICU)
  1. go to: http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/9/d/e9d80355-7ab4-45b8-80e8-983a48d5e1bd/msicuu2.exe
  2. download the file to your computer, run the package and install the utility
  3. run the utility that should be in your menu START > programs section
  4. Select Live Essentials and run through the process to remove it
  5. next, restart your computer and try to reinstall Live Messenger

  To answer your question, update usually retains your personal data (bookmarks, passwords recorded, etc.). However, it is always a good idea to keep a backup of your personal data in case of hard drive failure or accidental formatting, preferable on another hard drive, a USB pin/USB/thumb/key or a CD/DVD, so that you don't miss them.
