  I've been evaluating 10 Workstation on my Asus Q550LF (i7-4500U, 16gig ram, 256 GB SSD, HD 1 t) in an environment Windows 8.  I run my business without an IT Department.  I would use this laptop for professionals (mainly from MS office, web and a few applications legal owners) and personal (games, multimedia, web),.  However, I also need my machine of the company to be reliable.  VM Workstation On looks like it will allow me to achieve this goal.  I have installed VM Workstation (trial) on my laptop and created separate VMs for my office (vmWork) and the use of personnel (vmPersonal).  I installed MS Office on vmWork which seems to be working although sometimes slowly.

  I have a few specific questions.

  1. my laptop is enough to handle two or three virtual machines running simultaneously (such as outlook, word, and chrome running on vmWork) and (gmail, chrome and a youtube running on the other) without performance issues.

  2. I noticed that 10 Workstation for windows is only 32-bit.  Don't slow down applications?  Should I wait for a 64-bit version to come out?

  3 is exaggerated VM in this situation? I like the idea to isolate my applications work from my personal applications.  But I'm afraid that the performance of applications suffer too.  For example, Outlook was suspended during the operations that should be relatively simple such as the search for unread email.

  vmWork is configured with 4 GB of ram, 2 processors, 2 carrots, bridged network (although I tried it with 1 transformer and 1 core without apparent effect on performance).

  vmPersonal is configured with 6 GB of ram, 1 processor, 1 core, network bridge (this seems to work very well and can even launch a computer game).

  I can't speak for VM Player because I use workstation (9.0.2), but I think your sounds of the laptop quite capable of running virtual machines 2 or 3. I think you have a little too much RAM that was good. Especially the personal one. Most of the VMs that I run (although especially XP and Win7 invited) I have only 1 GB assigned. For my two main VM only I have 3 GB and 4 GB respectively. The 4 GB is my main development VM and it is still in use heavy and one with 3 GB using for indexing of web browsing, Office applications and so forth (usually a lot of applications open at the same time). I think that the main burden of memory, however, additional RAM is the performance of suspend / summary and I suspect also that, according to guest operating systems, Windows startup performance tries to fill the RAM allocated with data cached (superfetch). (More the most updated RAM cache).

  I have compiled a list of the performance parameters for regular use of VM that you might be interested in (link below).

  I do not run a reasonable platform (i7 - 3930K / 32GB), but I'm able to run 5 or 6 virtual machines at the same time with no degradation of actual performance for my use case.

  Correct, the RV180 is not compatible with the Cisco VPN Client.  The Iphone uses the Cisco VPN Client.

  You can use the PPTP on the RV180 server to connect a PPTP Client.

• best configuration for Small Business Server

  I'm looking for advice on HW and SW recommendations for a small business.  We have 15 users, 20 computers and 3 printers.  I currently have a single Windows Server 2008.  I want to run a domain controller main for all users, file sharing, print server, possibly Windows Update Center and eventually MS Exchange.  I am trying to decide the best configuration of HW with a fairly cheap budget.   I currently have 1 I7 based server with 4 GB of Ram, several IBM servers, P4 306 m (I have 4 +), and a lot of hard drives (all in a half rack).  I also need a decent backup system.

  Can anyone recommend the best configuration of HW player and hard?  Should I analyze server roles?  With respect to the SW, I'm a non-profit and use Windows Server 2008 (at a discount)

• SAN multisite and VMware Fault Tolerance

  My apologies if this is in the wrong section.

  I have a requirement for the two main rooms, with SAN and ESX hosts in each room.

  In total I have, for the sake of arguments, 200 VMS, with a split 50-50, so 100 in each room Basic.

  I want to use VMware of fault tolerance for machines remain operational in the event of a major failure or the other room Basic.

  I think I can use Multisite SAN to do.

  Please see attached diagram fo what I want to do, I know that the diagram is not correct but I drew it fast just to try to explain the scenario.

  SAN should resemble a single San for all ESXes. It doesn't matter how you do it.

  It is possible for the small environment. In general, vCenter requires 2 vCPU, while FT works for uniprocessor VMs only. But do not overestimate FT, it is not a universal solution and the universal answer.

  Hello everyone, I am a consultant for a small business to restructure their network.  They have currently a network of 10-workstation simple with a single server 2U (a TYAN Transport TA26 with a pair of 2nd Gen AMD Opteron 2000 series Dual - Core Processor) running Windows Server 2003 R2 standard edition (the operating system required for their store management software) and all their other business applications.

  My main goals are:

  (A) separate and isolate critical Applications of Business apps that bring Web threats

  (B) to simplify the management and office supply

  (C) introduce the tolerance of failures and business continuity

  In addition, I need to be able to do this for absolutely as low cost as possible and leverage our existing as better material as I can. In other words; I need to apply methodologies of data center of business using sensitivities to small businesses. I understand that most VMware products do most of the time, but my experience is limited to VMware Workstation, Server, ACE and player. I already know I want VMware View 3 for office centralized management and can use VMware ThinApp to deploy stand-alone applications that everyone uses (such as MS Office, Firefox) with the exception of an application (the store management software) which unfortunately requires Terminal Server - so I want to convert the existing Windows Svr'03 R2se Terminal Server running the store management software , in a virtual machine, I hope that can also run on the same ESX or ESXi physical server that also hosts VMware View

  My Questions are the following:

  (Q1) What is the minimum number of physical servers required for a VMware View solution 3 10-20 more a virtualized 10 standard client Terminal Server Windows Server 2003 R2 "edition"?

  I would like to implement fault tolerance for a couple of our virtual machines, but I was reading and I have a few questions.

  1. it is said that you must have 2 vmkernel NIC dedicated to fault tolerance. Can it be shared with vmotion NIC?

  2 FT does not support SMP. Is this still the case? We lack ESX 4 Update 1.

  3 FT does not support snapshots. VReplicator allows us to reproduce our vm. This creates a snapshot during replication. That are not or not be possible?

  1. you need at least 1 vmkernal NETWORK card dedicated for FT (or a new VIRTUAL local network, if you have 10 GbE) there is a lot of traffic that will be flowing for this shot

  2. Yes. You can't have FT w / 1 vCPU VMs currently. But if you have some awesome Nehalem procs, you may only have 1vCPU for your boxes of criticism

  3. they will fail. The snapshots are not possible on the VMS FT. As a result, backups will not work. I know it's one of the huge problems of scenario best IP, Setup a script to make a virtual machine out of FT, run the backup, and then select FT. A lot of work for a final result.
