• EqualLogic PS4000X drives update

  Hi all

  We were recently told by one of our consultants that our EqualLogic PS4000X cannot be upgraded from the existing disks from 600GO to something bigger. The reason given for this was that the particular model has a physical limitation which limited to 600GB or less readers.
  If it is true, it's really frustrating because it is barely 2 years and cost nearly 20 k £!

  I wonder if anyone can confirm or deny this?

  You must check with your representative VAR or sales.  I don't remember seeing a SAS for SATA drive ever offered to the PS4000 extension kit.  It could actually be more cost effective to get a PS4100E to try to update the SAS table.  Given that you can have up to 24 drives in the PS4100.

  We have a very old EqualLogic PS4100 with a red light a remote site (connected to a production server and works very well)

  Admin has already left, and we do not have its IP management or identifying information.

  the management is optional and it may not be configured. So check your host what address he used for iSCSI to table connection and try a browser with http:// or a ssh client and see what happened. You need java installed to get the GroupManager that run in the browser.

  I'm trying to downgrade the firmware on a version 9.0.2 to 8.1.4 PS4100 so that I can use the 1.2 with VMware vshere 5.1 MPIO drivers.

  I tried the switch of replacement ssh command and it fails with "- override - downgrade: not found".

  Currently waiting for my account techdirect to be configured, but it seems to take forever

  anyone would be able to explain the process of adding a new table to an existing group, please?

  We have a new PS4100 which was delivered with the 7.0.15 Firmware but the Group has a range of PS4000 on Firmware 8.0.5.

  How can I upgrade the firmware on the new PS4100 before running the Setup utility?

  Let the new Member to join an EMPTY pool as the "default" (its still a void in our environments) or create an and name the program installation or maintenance.

  If the table has joined this pool complete the configuration as Ports IP/network, RAID level and so on. I prefer a complete reconstruction and not a fast initialization, but it's your choice. Updated the FW and also check the FW drive.

  Try to ping the new IP addresses of existing hosts and if everything is OK, move member in your production area.

• EqualLogic PS4000X HARD drive replacement

  Hi all

  We received a helping hand me down PS4000X configured using Raid 10 and out of warranty.
  1 the 450 GB SAS HARD drive has failed.

  Dell support is waiting for response from the manufacturer if they can still provide this particular model of HARD drive
  St3450802ss Seagate Cheetah.

  I understand that the PS4000X supports 400/450/600 GB SAS HDD. But his rare ability and hard to find new replacement.

  Would it be possible if I just replace the defective HDD SAS with a 500 GB or 1 TB SAS HDD?

  If possible there will be any problems that arise?

  Hello Wee Jin,

  No, you cannot simply add the hard drive from the shelf in a judgment.  The EQL table requires only the readers of Dell.  They have firmware on them.   Also, you need to match the rpm speed as well. You cannot mix speeds in the same Member.

• Disc PS4100 replacement

  Hi all

  A few days ago, I found a disk fail on my PS4100.

  I have a new drive, but I can't add it to the system because I made a stupid mistake.

  I exctracted the disc more than 1 hour so that the system put the large/empty slot and now no discs are recognized.

  Any suggestions?

  I suspect you have the cause of the problem.  Leaving the reader in until replacement is to properly maintain the airflow for cooling.

  At you will replace it by a car brand from EQL, Dell?  Discs no Dell won't work.  Are there messages in EQL GUI Event Viewer when you insert the new drive?

  If you use a good drive from Dell, you have another piece of spare not appearing in this member?    If so, swap the new drive with the spare and put the spare wheel in the open slot.   The two appear?    If this isn't the case, then I guess you might be running and older version of the firmware.   For quite a time, try to is not on the table.  See if readers will then be displayed.

• PS4100 EQL replication to secondary site

  Hi all

  We need to configure the EQL replication to a DR site. It will probably take 1 x or 2 x PS4100; or 1 x PS4100 and 1 x PS6100 on each site.

  A few Qs for experts:

  (1) the primary site data will pass through the network of a 10 GB switch through 2 sets of x of firewalls and switches on a basis of 1 GB network. The secondary site will be also 2 x fixed firewall and the spine 1 GB. By reading the documentation Dell I understand that we need ICMP and 3260 open over the WAN.

  Is there any kind of questions of data from 9000 MTU at 1500 MTU across the network? Any kind of impact?

  (2) designed to set up the initial seed on site, i.e., configuration of the EQL box replica on the same network and replicate the volumes. Once the initial seed, move the EQL box to secondary site and re - configure replication to point to the new IP address and synchronize the Deltas? Is this the best way? or should I use the manual utility provided by Dell? or something else?

  Re: 1 there are also each port iSCSI members on each side of the must be able to reach all the other ports on the side of the partner.   This NAT firewall won't work.

  Re: 9000 vs 1500.  There is no problem.  Each iSCSI session, which is what the replication uses, can be negotiated frameworks standards or Jumbo.

  Re: 2 putting them side by side are the fastest and easiest way.

  I have a PS4100 with 12 600 GB disks in RAID-50 (4.18 TB), and both drives are spare.

  I want to develop more 1 TB and need to know if I can buy more discs and adding the existing pool.

  Or I have to buy more than 3 disks for a RAID-5?

  After placing a new drive, the total space of the pool will be available for expansion?

  Hello

  You cannot run the different RAID levels on the Member of the same group.  Once you set the RAID policy only politics is possible on this physical member.  Also, you can add just a few readers to expand current RAID set.  If the table is filled with 1/2, the upgrade option is only to add another 12 discs of the same type size.  If you use larger disks, will only be used for the capacity of the smallest disk.

  Readers must also be purchased from Dell and especially for the EQL San.  Generic disks won't work.

  Quick question according to your experiences.

  We have a few of EQL in different groups, and I want to move a member to another group to configure SyncRep on it.

  I can choose between a PS6000 with SATA 7.2 k drives or a PS4100 with 7.2 k SAS drives.

  I thought I'd take the PS4100 for there eve´n of SAS drives, they have the same rpm I think SAS is faster, not really sure about it. However the PS6000 have four ports rather than two ports ethernet on the PS4100, I guess I can get several MPIO paths using PS6000 performance improving.

  As you can tell I'm not one to use. Any ideas would be helpful thanks.

  If you want to use SyncRep both pools should be "identical" in terms of time of latency/Ops ARE / s. Otherwise the slower pool will limit your performance.

  Depending on your load of work 2x1GbE should be enough. Don't forget that ppl use most the last ports to dedicated so management your PS6000 gives only 3 usable ports. The PS4100 comes with NEARLINE SAS that are slightly faster than the old SATA drives.

  If you have SANhq available, take a look at the volume you want Syncrep' ed.

• Introduction of new PS4100 with migration

  my client has 2 sites, Production and DR. In Production, it has 1 PS5000X and 1 PS6000X, PS4000E 1 DR. All storage has different groups.

  EqualLogic Prod site performs replication on the site of DR.

  Now the customer comes to buy a new PS4100 that will replace PS4000E in the recovery site, which will be installed in the Production.

  The questions are:

  1. can I reproduce PS5000X, PS6000X and PS4000E to PS4100? Is it a replica supported configuration?

  2. How can I replace old with new PS4100 PS4000E storage without a duplication? In other words, how can I move all the data (mounted LUN and replicated data) from the old warehouse to new storage, without losing the configuration of replication?

  3. I would like to configure RAID50 on con PS4100 2 TB nearline SAS drive, it's a configuration supported?

  1 Yes, the replication is Firmware dependent, not limited by the hardware version, see the release notes.

  2. on the side of the DR, simply add the new table to the group, and then let the data cover two members.  Then once data are balanced between the two members, and it is finished, you can then delete the old Bay of the Group and you want to use it.

  3. When you add thePS4100 to the group, you specify the police RAID, Yes, RAID50 is supported.

• Cancel the mapping of space used Dell PS4100 SAN on the Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V cluster.

  Is Dell has a tool to undo the mapping of used space of deleted VMS or data on the volume/LUN, the SAN from Dell does not give space automatically if you delete data. Volume/Lun is thick.

  You must install the HIT / ME tool and use the EqlReThin utility.  If you download the 'Dell EqualLogic Host Integration Tools for Microsoft Installation and user guide' on the support site, there is a description on how it works.

• Disc is 'offline' in the table of PS4100

  One of the disks in the array has failed and I see the same log, System strives to rebuild the data on the hot spare, but was not able to complete and by reason, this hot spare failed too (at least it is indicated like this in the event log).

  First failed disk showed appropriate LED (a STOP, an ORANGE), while the second showing drive down that the two green LEDS. Status of the first diskette was 'impossible', but the second disc is "offline."

  I've already replaced the first disk and it is online and operational but the other shows always 'offline' and both LEDs are green. Watch the warning event log - "several spare disks are expected. Does this mean I have to replace this drive too?

  Hi, we're planning on upgrading to the latest 7.0.1 firmware and I noticed there are two files. We have 64 at the beginning. Ask yourself what file I use and the differences between the two. I couldn't really find any documentation.

  The 41xx, 61xx, 62xx models take the 64-bit version, all other controllers supported use the 32-bit image.

  Important note: two separate kits are now available in the .zip V7.0.1 Firmware file: 32-bit and 64-bit. After you download the .zip file, when you install the update, the wizard will ask you to select the installation kit.
