  Internal microphone is a part of the webcam.

  I recommend reinstall the webcam software too.

  In addition, you must go to-> sound and audio devices control panel and check the recording tab.
  Remember that the sound card has been chosen and that internal microphone is available.

  In addition you can find a Realtek HD audio manager in Control Panel as well. There you should be able to test the microphone.

  You remember what you were doing in fact when you play with the settings to get the microphone to pick up sound at least?

  If you see the steps listed by RajithR above, please follow them until you get to the "Recording" tab Recording devices how do you see? If you see more than one, then this might be the problem. If there is more than one device listed, you will need to disable all except the internal mic. This should get the mic back to normal levels.

  Found the answer: apparently after upgrade to 8.1 Windows, SoundMax drivers were not installed by Microsoft. Solution: go to C:\hp\drivers\SoundMax_ADI. Read the readme.txt file and then run the setup.exe program.
