  The 'volume' is a hard disk, a partition on a hard drive or a storage as a USB device.

  OS X automatically saves your document frequent while you work on it. If the volume of the device / it records on a summer formatted to allow 'versioning', you will be able to use Time Machine to open previous versions of your document.
