Question of CLARiiON/ESX

Maybe that's more a problem of CEM, but I thought I'd run it by anyone using a CLARiiON here.

We have 3 ESX 4 hosts connected to Clariion CX3 - 10 c. Last night we received a few errors on one SP.

-Storage DAE Faulted SPE enclosure: wiring information differs between SPs; may indicate disconnected cabinets.

-Disk Processore pregnant (enclosure SPE) is defective. Servers may have lost access to the hard drives in this storage system. See Navisphere Manager alerts for details.

-Navisphere can manage is more (SP - A). It does not server I/O to the storage system. See Navisphere Manager alerts for details.

Nothing has changed physically on our system. We have 3 ESX hosts that are connected to this table. As a result of these errors the other SP got the below error.

'10.150.1.106' cannot be managed.  All attempts to manage the system failed. Agent runs do not.

The IP referenced is one of our ESX host. I don't even know if we are short of Clariion agents on our guests. Can anyone shed some light on these? It appeared that us never lost the connection to our ESX host physical or virtual.

Thank you

Scott

You run Navisphere Agents on your ESX host?  Looks like you had MS fail briefly.  You have any visible forced LUNS in Navisphere console?  You should definitely talk to EMC this particular series of events.

  • Question of CLARiiON CX4 VAAI

    Hello everyone

We have updated all our ESX, ESXi 4.1 U1 guests and our version of FLAIR to use VAAI capabilities.

If I understand correctly, VAAI should offer block-release to zero. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand that this is a feature that will retrieve the storage on a LUN when it becomes available again.

And that is our problem. We have warnings and critical messages Clariion, indicating that the clusters of disks are full (one of them is 87%). But no matter how much ability to liberate us (moving files from drive to other LUNS in different basins), no space is reclaimed.

So, again, I am something misunderstanding here or do we just set something up to make this work?

The only other option I see right now is to empty the LUN, destroy it and re-create it. Obviously, this option is not very attractive.

    Kind regards

    Marco

The CLARiiON cannot know which blocks are occupied by VMDK files and what not, because he has no understanding of VMFS file system that is located on the LUN. So, I guess, the method you described is the unique to reclaim the space. But I would check with EMC to be sure.

As far as I KNOW, there will be improvements to VAAI in the future that allow the ESX host to tell the storage Bay, which blocks it released on a LUN when deleting files. The table can then mark the block unscathed and reuse/reorganize their. This would be the missing link and would allow the table to reclaim unused space on thin LUNS provisioned.

  • Question about installing ESX 3.5 on a SAN LUN?

    Hello

I read that VMware does not recommend that the ESX 3.5 installation has access to the LUNS shared with virtual machines.

But again, they recommend that the ESX 3.5 installation is placed on a logic unit number, so it is not installed locally.

How does? In my world the ESX 3.5 installation can be installed on a LUN, but there was also that she had access to other VMs on the LUN.

    What Miss me?

    Kind regards

    Carl-Marius

The pooling of the LUN is necessary good for the functions of the DRS / HA, alias is a sine qua non for these functions work properly, for the installation of VMware LUN se, don't see much gain from this practice, Apart that you must post the version you want to install support booting from a SAN where as far as I know just vSphere 4.1 supports initialization SAN.

  • N00b question: backups in ESX 3i?

I inherited a lot of the ESX 3i servers and were tasked to save some. While the virtual machines that are considered "critical" have backup agents installed inside the SMV, how can I save snapshots instead? Is this possible without upgrade to licensed versions? We are a church and very short of money.

I saw this: http://communities.VMware.com/docs/doc-8760 but it speaks of the console commands. I can't access a console...

Links or advice would be very helpful.

  • Ridiculous question: Custom built ESX (i) server: worth it?

Hi all.  I'll start by saying that I am new to using virtual machine; Recently, I jumped on the wagon.  Dive head first, I'm looking to withstand a server ESX (i) of production mainly running some flavor of * nix with a typical installation of the LAMP and perhaps a few other ad - hoc * nix VM.  SQL get used more & more, I'll get off to another physical machine, but for now, I think I'm ok.  I currently have a * LAMP server of nix running on a Core 2 Quad (Q6600) & 4 GB.  Load exceeds rarely 0.75 and I have yet to see pass over 2.25.

Now, unfortunately Uncle Scrooge is not my uncle, so I can't plop down the crowd K required on a well-configured dual quad-core Xeon with 16 GB of RAM.  I had looked for renovated material and although some prices were within my reach (less than 2 k), many configurations don't compare to what I have now.  I'll do a lateral movement in terms of processing power, RAM etc, but I think that to do a dual Xeon 3.0 (single cores with a 800 MHz front bus) would be a step down from a Core 2 Quad.  (Am I wrong?)  I found some interesting configurations here and there but have concerns about the dilapidated equipment and limited growth potential.  Most of the systems were too expensive so only configured, only offered no dual-core option two, either dual core dual maxed out at 2.8 GHz.  I'd rather buy something middle of the road, so that all the less, he would replace what I have now and also I want to put a pair of quad-core Xeon on the road.

I have my own computers to build in general, but since ESX (i), from what I've gleaned so far, don't just install and run it on anything, I have my doubts, it will be a viable option.  Although the posts here & here (no links xtravirt work) suggest this has been done, they are tactile obsolete.  That being said,

Anyone done anything with technology rececnt like Core i7?

What a recent Tyan/SuperMicro/Asus dualistic structure and a couple of Gainestowns?

Savings, if any, to build your own servers VM outweigh the headaches to deal with

    -Compatible machines HCL ESX (i)

    -Machines years & refurbished

Any input is greatly appreciated.  Thank you for reading!

  • Question of iSCSI ESX 3.5

So, I'm curious to know if anyone has seen this error

I installed ESX 3.5 on a Dell 2950 and do it connect in an Array of SAM SuperMicro for its shared storage. On the table itself, I used Open-E and set up a volume of 6 TB.

In ESX, I can connect to the table correctly, but for some reason any he sees only 18.75 GB available on the table (which is very strange given there is no volume of this size set on the table).

Documentation I've read, ESX server must use vmhba32, but in this case the server uses vmhba33.  Since I am relatively new to the administration of VMware, I'm not entirely sure is abnormal or not.

Any ideas on what could be the cause?

    Thank you

    Ketil

Maximum size of the LUNS WITH ESX can work is 2 TB. Therefore, cut your array into chunks of 2 TB.

  • Update disk in VMware ESX 3i

    Hi all

I recently replace the SATA 7.2 K six drive in my PowerEdge server for six SAS 15 K disks. Previously, I did my VM then restored for the new RAID volume 50 and backup. But when I start the virtual machine (centos 5) and run ' dd if = / dev/zero of = testfile2 bs = 8192 count = 12207 "the almost the same result I had with the SATA disks. My question is: VMWare ESX 3i immediately recognize the new SAS drive? Or maybe it's write the disc with the previous speed?

    Thank you and best regards,

    Amedina

DD may be not the best tool to test the performance. In theory, the SAS drives, if you get more IOPs, dd wrote only (sequential).

RAID 50 with only six readers isn't a really good choice either.

Depending on your RAID controller (Perc xx? with battery backup cache write?), the bottleneck is not the disks, but the controller itself (calculation of parity on the two RAID5) and striping on the RAID50.

Think about another provision RAID (8 disks RAID10?) and another test tool.

  • ESX 3.5 U4 and U5 for Windows 2008 R2

    Hello

    I have a few questions about upgrading ESX 3.5 U4 to ESX 3.5 U5.

I have a farm with 4 ESX 3.5 U4 and I need to install several windows 2008 R2 guest OS so I need you to update to the U5. Is it possible to update a single ESX now to accommodate our new 2008 R2 servers and in a few weeks, to upgrade the rest of the ESX?

I think it will turn off the AP and the vmotion for these comments specific (2008 R2) but what other hosts?

Where is the update? Is it normal that I need to restart the ESX and boot to a CD?

    Concerning

    JAY

    Hi Jay0,

I guess your question, you do not use the Update Manager?

Why would you only upgrade on the host and other later? Are the hosts in the same cluster? I recommend that they all the same version, especially if they are in the same cluster HA.

Although in the answer you're question about the pre 2008 R2 invited they works perfectly in a cluster with hosts U4 and U5 present.

The ESX host will need a reboot, but there are faster ways to update your hosts to reinstall with a cd. You can either copy the update to the host and use esxupdate or my recommended method is to use Update Manager.

    Hope this helps

    Mike.

  • Add new ESX Server Cluster

Just a quick question, I installed ESX 3.5 on a new server X 4200 and you want to add the new node to the cluster in our production environment.

Is it just a case of click with the right button on the cluster Server VIrtual Center and selecting "add host" and then passing by the guests of the wizard? I've never done this before, but it seems that it is very simple.

Am I missing something and I need to know?

    Thank you

If you have your new esx Server in the inventory just drag and drop it to your cluster. If you do not add the esx server to your inventory list you can right click on the cluster and just add the esx server there.

If you want to set this for VCA ESX Server you must disable all the virtual machine on the ESX Server. otherwise, you can add the ESX with virtual machines for your cluster.

    Thank you

  • Difference between vCenter server and ESX server

    Hello

I'm new to the development of VMware. Can you please explain me how ESX server differs from the VirtualCenter Server?

According to my knowledge, ESX server is the one on which the real images are created and deployed while VirtualCenter manages ESX (one at a time) servers. ability to manage multiple ESX servers, both 'vSphere' a.

My understanding is correct. Kindly answer my question.

ESX (later - ESX4) is a system of bare metal operating that you can install directly on your physical hardware. This is the hypervisor layer that helps you to run multiple virtual machines on a single piece of material. The heart of ESX is the VMkernel which does all the magic (resouce management VM.. .and much). Talk about vCenter (previously Center Virtual Server) is a management application that you can install on a separate physical computer (you can even have a virtual vCenter). Once your vCenter is allowed, you can begin to manage the ESX servers.

There are two ways to manage ESX. One is that you can directly connect to your ESX Server with root password and manage it. Otherwise, connect the server vCenter, add the ESX Server so that your vCenter it manages.

vCenter resembles a management station from which you can manage your multiple ESX servers.

  • Question of VMA preview concept.

    Hello

Is it true that the VMAusage is common to vCenter, rather than using VMA we can actually control the ESX / I hosts instead of using vcenter?

    Kind regards

    AWT

You can use VMA for orders of questions for the ESX host, individually (without a vCentre), but you lose all management functions which carry the vCentre.

VMA will never be a replacement for a VC - your hosts will remain stand-alone hosts.

  • U4 Sync ESX 3.5 times

    Hello

Q: If no synchronization of the virtual machine with ESX via Vmtools then why configuration ESX NTP client really matter?  alerts etc., scheduled tasks?

Q: we use windows time server that is configured to synchronize the Microsoft time server outside.  Time service Windows then all the machines in the synchronization domain.  My question is in ESX server, in light of the above statement, it would be beneficial to use the time server internal domain as the #1 time server in ESX?  Also is it advantageous to do the 2nd time server an outside source?

In the companies, the Windows group was a similar question, and we have done the following:

I don't know if it is a best practice to synchronize your VM (s) to your ESX/ESXi host and then have this synchronization to your external time source, it can be for the interpretation, though that our Windows team felt they wanted to directly synchronize the VM (s) to our AD/external source since they are all connected to the domain. We disable the synchronization of the VM to the host, but we also synchronizes our NTP Client settings on our ESX host to our internal NTP server. The reason that synchronization is that we have also our Service Console not only authenticate to the local administrator account, but we also talk to AD while VI Admins can also connect using their information to identify AD and we keep only a single local administrator account for the Group UNIX/Linux to manage the host. As you probably know, directory services/AD is a very sensitive time and you want to ensure that you are not to drift too far from the other, otherwise the system will not allow you to open a session and we felt that it should not rely on the host computer for the time in which case the host loses his sync so we have two sources NTP.

    Hope this helps

  • Host ESX HD stuff?

Couple of questions about the ESX host and storage for it.  Keep in mind, I have only a few ESX hosts.  My main problem is not not the purchase of hard drives, but the shortage of places in my background to put them.

Given HA/DRS/etc. are always people mirrored the ESX host if there is no virtual machines on the same axis?  Why bother if HA/DRS is involved you would have time to rebuild the ESX host.  Worst case, you will lose the second HD until you can get the first host ESX rebuilt (probably not, and if it happens you are probably looking for a problem bigger than a dead HD).

    OR

It would be better to reflect a couple of HDs, create the required virtual 36 GB drives and load each ESX in it's own 36 GB vd on the same mirror HDs?

    Thank you

    Bob

Yes I see it now. Have been home all day with my kids watching Yo Gabba Gabba again and again. Brain is mush

No RAID is logical if you clusters that can tolerate loss of a host without overloading the remaining hosts. I work in a hosting environment and we tend to be very concerned about ALS, so anything that prevents downtime is good (although I think some of it is just inertia on our part, we just do things with virtual systems that they made us things with physical systems).

  • The LAbManager may be installed or use without going through an ESX Server install?

    Hi all

I have an ibm x 345 with a w2k3 Server installed on it with VM 2.

First virtual machine has obtained a virtual VMware vCenter Server 2.5.

Second got VM VMware vCenter Lab Manager.

Do I really need another server with ESX or can I use another machine to w2k3 rather or ESX for the installation of all labmanger work.

I know that I post question diferent with a long period of time, but I can't put more 5 then h weeks on this project for my work.

    lafa91

So if I understand you use VMware Server on you win2k3 machine and then have the virtual machines running under VMware Server - is that correct?  Now to answer your question Yes you ESX or ESXi to use Lab Manager - from the Lab Manager release notes:

    The system configuration required

Lab Manager requires VMware Infrastructure 3 Standard or Enterprise (VMware ESX 3.5 Update 1 or 2 update and VMware VirtualCenter 2.5 Update 1 or 2 update).

Lab Manager does not work with VMware Infrastructure 3 Foundation or VMware ESXi 3.5. For more information on requirements and procedures to implement the product, see the Guide of Installation and upgrade for Lab Manager 3.0.

For more information about hardware compatibility for ESX 3.5, see the hardware compatibility guides.
