Question of moving from virtual machine

Hey everyone, I have installed virtual machine I need to move from one hard drive to another.  The problem I have is that the destination drive is formatted in FAT32 and cannot send the VM on this disk because it is on the 4 GB file limitation.  I changed the settings to the hard drive to divide it into sections of 2 GB but can't seem to find where these files moved to.  I then looked in the file vmware-vdiskmanager-r sourceDisk.vmdk t 1 targetDisk.vmdk option, but it can not find the hard associated with the virtual machine.  It turns out that when I installed the virtual machine, it all packed in a .vmwarevm file.  I don't know how I can do this now. Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

If you have already selected a 'Divided into 2 GB files' in the settings of the Virtual Machine, you can now copy/move the computer virtual package (.vmwarevm) for the drive/partition/volume formatted FAT32.

A Virtual Machine package (.vmwarevm) is actually nothing more then a folder containing files (and other files).  Despite its size, as shown in the Finder, as long as 'Divide into 2 GB files' is selected in settings of the Virtual Machine, it can be copied/moved to a FAT32 format volume/partition/drive.

  • Question on moving a virtual machine from 4.1 to 5.5

    Hello

My boss put me on the same page brings on virtualization of our systems and we are vMware 4.1 servers migration to a new Server 5.5. It has been their conversion by installing vCenter converter software on the virtual machine 4.1 and selecting 'physical machine' (even if it is a virtual machine) to send it to our Server 5.5. On the other hand, I wanted to install the vCenter on my local PC software and convert 4.1 VMS using VMWare infrastructure to send it to our Server 5.5. Are there benefits or cuts anyway compared to another?

Specifically, I am curious if the infrastructure mode is slower than "physical machine" because the Server 4.1 must upload to the Server 5.5 through my machine, or if these two servers are just pass between them and my local computer configure work and is able to track progress.

    Thank you

    Colin

    Hello. Colin

There are two things you need to consider:

-the first is the difference between P2V and V2V. Although the 'P' in P2V used to stand for 'physical' it really means 'power' (it is that it displays a UI converter for a few versions now). So, you can virtual machines P2V but they must be turned on. V2V OTOH have to be put off.

-the second difference is the way in which traffic flows. In the case of P2V source machine pushes the data directly to the destination ESX (source Windows) host or destination VM THAT pull data directly from the source (source of Linux) computer; See pp.11, 12 user guide. In the case of V2V however, data traffic flows from source VM through the converter Server destination of VM. This may cause reduced performance. If your local computer is slow or distant, this decrease can be dramatic.

  • Simple Question - How to move virtual machines from 1 box to another?

    Hello

I'm new to VMware products so please bare my stupidity.

I have 2 servers I received vSphere on. They have all two internal storage (SAN No. still ) which means I can't take advantage of vMotion. So that leaves me to figure out how would one move a Virtual Machine from one box to the other? I currently have two boxes configured with a vCenter Server under 1 datacenter server.

The simplest solution (considering vCenter) is cold using migrate operation.

  • Question on networks of Virtual Machine

I have a host machine running Windows 7. I installed VMware player and I create a virtual computer running Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.5 (almost identical to the version 5.5 of Red Hat). In the end I will be installing an application on the virtual machine that is not compatible with DHCP. So, when I install OEL 5.5 I need to manually provide information from network devices (IP address, primary DNS, subnet mask and host name). I've done it before on successfully on a material physical but never before on a virtual machine. On my first attempt I was wrong and my web browser running on the virtual machine can connect to the Internet.

My instructions say "set the gateway information based on the IP Address of the gateway router. I wonder if this is correct in view of the virtual machine.

On the machine host, when I run the ipconfig command in the DOS window I see a mask of address and the IP subnet for the host, and I see two additional network adapters for VMware (VMnet1 and VMnet8). The three entries (for example, the host VMnet1 and VMnet8) have the same subnet mask value and different IP addresses (first two segments of the IP addresses are the same, third and fourth segments are different).

My question is, what are VMWare network cards and I have to pay attention to these IP addresses when I manually configure networking on the virtual machine?

VMware Player provides essentially 3 types of network connections:

    • 'The bridge' - directly connected to your router
    • "Host-Only' (VMnet1) - limited to the host and the virtual machines network
    • "NAT" (VMnet8) - network address translation

VMnet1 and VMnet8 virtual cards that allow the host to communicate with the virtual machines and vice versa.

Depending on if your virtual machine should be accessible from other systems, you can consider using (in - and outgoing) Bridged or NAT (outgoing mail). With Bridged networking, addresses are usually provided by your router/DHCP server. For NAT, the address of the gateway/DNS is 192.168.x.2. Since the VMware Server DHCP internal for NAT and Host-Only uses 192.168.x.128... 254 for dynamic addressing, you want to select a static address in the 192.168.x.3... range 127.

The easiest way to find out how to correctly configure the network, must first set the operating system to DHCP, note gatherings settings and then just choose another IP address when you configure static settings.

  • Moving the virtual machine containing vCenter to another host ESXI

I am currently learning/building my first setup of virtualization. I made the mistake of letting the size of the block of the data warehouses to 1 MB. Now, I need to rebuild one of my stores of data.

I could use vcenter for all my other VMS out migrate to another server esxi. I do not know how to move the VM vCenter, because he must be stopped to be moved, but I need to use the tool of migration/converter to move, which seems quite accessible from within the virtual machine.

    Any ideas?

Stop vcenter Server and unregister (remove the inventory) of the inventory of the ESXi host. Then use example of Veeam FastSCP to copy some files/folder of the virtual machine to the other hosts data store and register the virtual machine to the inventory of the ESXi host by right-clicking the file vmx (add to the inventory). Make sure that there are no snapshots on the server vCenter Server!

  • Question about snapshots and virtual machines

    Hi all

I have a small question about snapshots. I use VMware for about 6 months and I read about snapshots and how they work but still have a question to make sure that I understand how it works and it will work the way I think it works.

I have a Windows 2003 server, which is a virtual machine. I have an application that uses MSDE database. I want to upgrade the database to MS SQL 2005, but to do this I need to back up the MSDE database, uninstall MSDE, and then install SQL 2005 and move the SQL database. This happens on the same VM.

What I was thinking if I well Snapshots correctly is to snap turned the virtual machine before doing anything. Then do my upgrade steps and see if everything works. If its all messed up so I should be able to return to my shot and everything should be the way he had. What is the good? One of the main reasons I moved the server VM was because of this upgrade.

After reading the documentation for the snapshots, it's how I undestood it. Pretty much any change could be reversed with snapshots. I wish just they had put in a few examples in the PDF file. Also it would be the same for all type of grades of the OS? Could I snapshot a Windows 2000 Server, and then "in the upgrade of the square" to Windows 2003? I've cloned a VM to do this but was curious about whether snapshots would be just as easy.

    Thanks for your help.

    That is right.

Exactly the same thing for the upgrades of the OS.

Perhaps the most important thing with the snapshots is to keep an eye on them and don't let them sit too long or become too big.  You have described the use cases are very good uses for snapshots.  Just make sure you have a solid plan with a schedule set, so that you can come back or validate changes before the snapshot becomes too large.

    Good luck!

Does anyone know how to move a library with ratings, playlists, etc., to a new Win7 PC iTunes?  The mapping of the file will be slightly different on the Win7 machine; therefore a straight copy Library.XML file will not work.

    Hello

Welcome to the Microsoft Answers Forum!

The first thing to do is to make sure your music is all set in the iTunes music folder. If you have some other songs where you need to consolidate your library.

Then install iTunes on the new PC, but do not add any music.
With closed iTunes, drag the iTunes folder to music on the new PC on the desktop.

Then with iTunes closed on both computers, you must copy the iTunes folder from the old PC to the fodler music on the new PC so that it replaces the one dragged out you.

It does not really matter how achieve copy - network or via an external drive.

The last thing you need to do is to check the permissions on the iTunes folder that you copied on the new PC, your account needs full control.

  • Question to delete the virtual machine

    Hi all

    ESXi 4.0 and 4.1

    1. when I "delete VM from disk", why sometimes the record (with disk vmdk files) are not deleted? Is this a normal behavior?

    2. If the size of the virtual machine is 100 GB, can I expect that there will be 100 GB of space released in the data store?

    Thank you.

    Fajar.

    (1) why vmdk can be detached? What is the cause?

1 - in fact the only one - is that the virtual disk has been manually detached.

    (2) why ESXi don't simply delete the entire folder when you are prompted to "remove disc"? You can probably avoid this kind of problem.

For security reasons, only files that are known to belong to the virtual machine will be removed. The problems you get with deleting too many files is generally much more severe than the one you if a file is not deleted.

I check the file against the inventory, but it becomes tiring when the folder is located in the shared data store, I check against several hosts.

In 99% of cases (have you seen, I did not use the word "generally") ' delete drive ' will delete all files related to the virtual machine. In the case of a shared storage you don't have to check on each host, since, in the majority of cases (again once I have use 'usually) all guests have access to the same storage.

Another reason why the - mainly the vmdk files - files cannot be deleted, is when they are locked. For example, by a hanging backup process.

  • Experience with the moving of virtual machines

I want to ask this question, the opinion of other users in the forum.  I have a host ESX (3.5, 163429).  I'll build a new ESX host and the patch at the same level.  Are there any pitfalls to move existing virtual machines to the new ESX host?  The material will be very different, because it is a newer than my current ESX host server.  I do not plan on using vMotion to move these VMs.  All the tips are greatly appreciated.

Virtual HW exposed to VMS is identical except for the cpu, VMs are not aware of the real chipset, controllers, memory, scsi, and so on. Cold migration to intel AMD does not need to change anything inside the virtual machine. However, the physical processor *IS* visible to virtual machines. So, if you are running VMs that loading a specific kernel for processors Intel or AMD CPU (like Linux), you may have a problem.

  • Moving the virtual machines with FastSCP

    Hello

I have a question, I would like to know if anyone has done this before, I copy on an external hard drive, some virtual machines so that I can transfer them to another site.

If I use FastSCP copy host ESX 3.5 Update 4 to post HD then copy them to vmfs another of the host partition, and then use the importer of them for import into the Vcenter to the other site.

Because someone told me that if I use FastSCP vs WinSCP I can do something that WinSCP can not do, and I don't remember what it was, but believe that it had to do with vmfs? So if someone has done this, please let me know.

    Thank you

    -Mike

Because someone told me that if I use FastSCP vs WinSCP I can do something that cannot make WinSCP,

Not true.  The one who told you this, needs to get a job, because they have no idea.  It is just a file.  It doesn't matter HOW transfer you.  If we transfer correctly it will work, let it be.

Also, you cannot use importing, unless you transfer the entire folder, because the importer (or VM converter) requires the vmx file identify the configuration of the virtual machine.

Personally, I find that WinSCP is better, FastSCP has firewall problems, and it's a hassle.  The BEST is: http://www.bitvise.com/tunnelier

All in one tool, SSH, file transfer.

  • VM moving from one machine to another

    Hi guys,.

I have problem for move/copy the vm in vmware Server 2.0 from one physical server to another.

Server physical orig: Intel 1530CLR with WinXP x 64 Pro Server is installed.

    Destination server: Server 1530AHLX Intel with WinServer 2003 R2 x 64 installed.

The two server VMware server 2.0 installed. The virtual computer OS is RHEL ES 4.4 32 bits.

The virtual machine works perfectly on the home server, but I have to move it to another machine. I have turned off the virtual computer, copied the directory on the same path on the destination server. Then, I am trying to add the virtual machine in VMware server 2.0.

    I get the following error:

    & lt; quote & gt; The selected virtual machine is not recognized on this system. The cause of this problem is perhaps that the virtual machine's .vmx file is corrupted, or that the version of virtual machine is more recent that is recognized by the host. You can delete the VM inventory if you believe that it is not recoverable. Click on the link below to remove the virtual machine from the inventory. Delete Virtual MachineTo help diagnose the problem, you can check the virtual machine files to their last known location: "[VMS] VSTESTS/VSTESTS.vmx" & lt; / quote & gt;

Another thing I've tried to do is to create the new virtual machine and attach the file hard... but another error here: "the selected file is not a valid virtual disk file. Please choose another... "

However, I uninstalled (on the destination server), VMware Server and installed VMware player - and hurray!... the virtual machine is running.

It is not a Virtual Machine specific, because I tried to copy a two other VM, and same result here...

So, the conclusion is that this is not a hardware failure (it runs on VMware Player), but miss some boring setups.

I have these files in the folder of the virtual machine:

In the hard file, the lines that start '1.' should begin with a character ' # '-that's what your have actually. It is preferable to attach files to messages rather than copy and paste.

Other virtual machines that you have running, they are the same encoding (windows-1255)? I have not added your .vmx file to my inventory, no problem. Other than expected, differences if you compare a vmx work and and this 'broken' with something like windiff, see anything? Feel free to post, as to fix, a .vmx server target.

    Thank you

Licenses on these machines are more likely to OEM licenses and so are related to the first machine to which they were installed on.  So, when your Compaq is dead, then no license.  What you need to do is install the Compaq drive has failed as an extra drive (secondary) on the IBM. Sometimes, when you do this, the computer will attempt to start since incorrect disk.  If when you start your IBM machine, you must press the key at the beginning that sends you in the settings of the BIOS on the computer.  Somewhere in the BIOS settings, you must specify that you want the IBM to boot from the original disk which has been in the IBM instead of the disk from Compaq.  Once you do this, IBM should start from its own drive without licensing issues.  You should then see the Compaq drive mounted as a secondary drive under "My Computer".  You will then be able to copy or back up files, you need to save this record.
