Question of Vista service pak2

Anyone can help.  Immediately after installing Vista service pak2 and restarted my computer, I noticed that the blue "bubble" network on the lower right system tray notification icon no longer appears.  The "network icon" checkbox option in the tray system is no longer available as an option (i.e. box is faded-out/inactive).  I really need to recover this important indicator.  Now, with the other Network Associates programs that this indicator of notification was previously providing status on, I'm more able to say whether or not my IP phone connection works.  How can I get that back?  Thank you, John.

Hi jggaj

Welcome to the Microsoft Vista answers Forum!

You are able to go online after installation of Service Pack 2?

I would have recommended methods

Method 1:

Try to restore the default icons, follow these steps

i. right click on the system tray

II. Select Properties

III. click on the Customize tab

IV. select restore default

v. restart the computer

Method 2:

Run SFC (System File Checker Scan). To run a SFC scan, follow these steps:
Open an elevated command prompt. To do this,

i. click on Start ,

II. click on all programs ,

III. click Accessories , right-click command prompt ,

IV. and then click on run as administrator.

v. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password, or click allow or continue.

VI. at the command prompt, type sfc/scannow and press to enter. Once the scan is complete, restart the computer so that the changes take effect

Below link for reference: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936212

Method 3:

There's Fix it tool related to the issue, try the fix it and check if this is useful. Link below will help you with the same: System icons do not appear in the notification area in Windows Vista or Windows 7, you must restart the computer: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/945011/en-us

All the best!

Thank you, and in what concerns:

I just bought a Win7 update to finally get rid of my Vista.  I had automatic updates of Vista from day one and it is completely up to date after the update of Windows.  However, when I go to install the upgrade to Win7, it won't let me because it says I need Service Pack 1 installed on my Vista.  When I return to the WIndows update, it won't let me because he thinks that it is up-to-date.  What can I do?
