Question of VMWare Converter.

Does anyone know if you use VMWare converter to convert your currntly running workstation (Vista Business x 64) in a virtual computer if the resulting VM is a duplicate of the workstation at the time where the conversion STARTS or when it ENDS?

Thank you! -Kelly

Converter takes a snapshot of the VSS-before starting to copy files - so everything that you during the copy will be lost inbside the virtual machine

  • Question about VMware Converter traffic

    Hi all

Hoping someone can shed some light on this. I do a P2V on a physical server in site A and destination ESXi host is also at the site. However, the field 'destination' in the VMware converter must be the vCenter server which is on the Site B (via a 6 MB WAN connection) as the destination host is managed by a vCenter server. My question is if I use the server vCenter (located on a WAN connection) as a destination and then choose the host located on the local site in the converter, converter traffic flow over the WAN? Or is it just flow locally from the Source to the Destination and just use the vCenter server as a server of type "authentication" for the initial Setup?

And as a side note, if I set the destination host ESXi as a destination in the converter instead of the vCenter server, I get the error indicated in this KB. http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/search.do?cmd=displayKC & docType = kc & docTypeID = DT_KB_1_1 & externalId = 2012310

With the help of converter 5.5.1

    Thanks for your help!

    Hello

Traffic passes from the source computer to the destination ESX. You will have a small slowdown in the wizard before you start converting mainly to get the VC inventory. See the graphics in the user pp. 11-13 guide

    Concerning

P.S. If you want to V2V, keep the server converter on site A, too as in this case, that the data passes through it.

  • Question about traffic converter

It's maybe a stupid question, but here goes.

Matter where you install and run VMware Converter with respect to the flow of traffic between two different virtual clusters?

In other words, I have the source cluster in TEXAS and the cluster of destination in LOUISIANA. It would make a difference if I ran VMWare Converter to do say a local TX V2V cluster, or even through my laptop via a VPN connection in... OHIO?

Just try to understand if the actual location of the converter customer makes a difference in traffic during the conversion...

V2V traffic passes to server converter source computer to the destination ESX (it is not so for P2V). So, it can make a big difference where Converter server is running.

In addition to the converter uses the NFC Protocol, that is not tolerant to high latency networks (this is why conversions generally do not work on WAN).

  • VMWare converter - Windows NT

    Hello

Not sure if this is the right place for this question, but I need to create an image of VM to a Windows NT computer.  I was hoping to use the Converter Standalone package, until I realized that it was not compatible with NT.  Then I read that an older version (3.0.2) of the converter work with NT, but was crushed to learn that he was no longer available for download.  Can anyone offer any suggestions?

    Thank you

glenikins wrote: I checked this and v4.0.1 does support Windows NT (SP6) but only for a machine virtual source, not to a conversion powered physical machine.  It's a physical Windows NT machine that I need to convert it to a virtual machine.  Do I have any options for this?

Yes, there are always options.  The manifest is for VMware converter - 3.0.3 - 89816.exe is no longer available for download on VMware, however, it can be downloaded from elsewhere.  Don't say that I recommend that, however, it is an option and if you choose that route then ensure that the SHA1 checksum: 29ed0cc664df0a7caba542ad1d3e18eb3aed4e96

Another option might be to use imaging software to create an image of the pHDD to a vHDD in a virtual machine and then see if the converter can handle the VM image to start correctly and install VMware Tools.

Then the other option is similar to the second option that after imaging P2V start the virtual machine with the appropriate ISO Image and manually inject the necessary Mass Storage Controller and keyboard driver and settings in the Windows registry to enable the virtual machine to start and then install VMware Tools.

  • Difficulties of VMWare Converter

I just downloaded and installed the latest VMWare Converter app and I have a few problems.

The application is running on my local machine.  The source server is an old HP running RHEL 3, and the destination is a server ESXi 4.0.

After that I filled information in the form of the source server, I click on "View Source" or "Next"  Both lead the runs out of action with the message "Unable to linux machine live query.

The credentials are correct, as I am able to SSH to the server source with them.  There is no echo command in .bashrc, and iptables is disabled.

Apparently relevant errors in converter_gui_2.txt are:

  • VMWare Converter - cloning of hard drives

I'm looking to virtualize a phyiscal server, but I have a question that I can't find the answer.  The server I want to virtualize has two hard disks (100GB & 800 GB).

My question, VMWare Converter will only make a virtual machine that has two virtual hard disks; a 100 GB and the other 800 GB?  Problem is that my hypervisor has 900 GB free.  I hope that it will only copy on space used and I would put a buffer of hard drive space.  Comments welcome!

You can choose to resize the destination process devices.  As long as you have the required amount of free space, you will be fine.

  • VMware Converter with VMware Essentials

    Hi all

Hope I am posting this in the right forum. I'm looking to virtualize a couple of servers for a small business and VMware vSphere Advisor recommended buy VMware vSphere 4 Essentials. As part of the migration to VMware, I need to convert a couple of existing servers, including most of the PDC for the office, for VMware. The questions I have is, can I use the VMware Converter with Essentials vCentre?

    Thank you, Kris

    Hi Kris,

VMware Converter vCentre is a module of vCenter Server 4. So yes, you can use it with a license of vSphere 4 Essentials. You can also use vCenter Converter Standalone, which is free.

About your main domain controller, it is recommended not to virtualize domain controllers Windows of P2V. In general, it is best to install a new domain controller and switch roles with the old. Take a look at this kb for more details.

    It will be useful.

  • VMware converter 4 support for partitions on dynamic disks

I currently have a server physical windows 2003 which has its system and data partitions defined as dynamic disks (C and D partitions lie on disk 0-dynamic) not well why it's set up this way, it was built just like that.

The goal is to convert this virtual server and I read many forums stating that dynamic disks are not supported for vmware converter, but some cases have succeeded where the target score was a record time-basic-but-now-dynamics.

Is this the case? and if so, what alternatives can be tried to virtualize the server.

Dynamic disks are supported for Windows.  The resulting virtual machine will only basic disks in a hot clone.

I would just suggest that you make a clone of hot regular and do a slight reduction in the size of the disc resulting (even if it is 1 MB).

Second, ensure that the system starts out of the c:\ partition and it is marked as a partition active and has a file boot.ini in the root.

More likely, the system of the source (172.19.129.10) cannot reach the host ESX by DNS or TCP Port 902 is stuck between them.

  • Upgrade to VMware Converter

I am a registered product VMware Converter 3.0.3 user and I would like to upgrade the VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.0.1 product

    Question:

I can simply install Converter Standalone 4.0.1 on the existing Converter 3.0.3 or should it be uninstalled manually?

    Thanks for the tips.

You can install over your existing version.

  • VMWare converter hangs on RHEL/CentOS 2 and 3 guests

I tried this on three different hosts and in each case the vmware converter starts ok, then eventually it simply crashes.  I logged on the source host to see what was going on and noticed that it crashes there is no vmware running process, whereas before I was able to see the vmware converter process, but also the tar of the process which has begun.

Any suggestions?  This product don't feel really as it is completely "cooked", at least on the side of things Linux.

I really don't understand why rsync would be a faster, unless you were synchronizing after an initial copy.

I don't know why you have to do all this hack later.  I fear systems that you are having to do this on the 2.4 kernels, which are basically not supported (read as "will not work"), except for explicitly RHEL 2.1, which we specially deal.

CentOS is generally not supported (read as "not tested, no guarantee it won't work at all, no promises of any assistance, good luck").

That is all listed in the release notes: http://www.vmware.com/support/converter/doc/releasenotes_conv401.html#guestos

But many people have had success with CentOS, and they have not needed to play with the initrd, grub, etc..  This is a very large part of the value provided by the Linux P2V functionality, so have to do it yourself sucks.  Can you give me the versions accurate that you are having to do with?

Honestly, if you do all that cold converter Clone CD (available as part of the converter company releases) might be a better approach because it allows to copy disks completely, you will lose any LVM and won't have problems with 'magic' confusion of tar files. But for the record, the cold Clone CD does not support provisioning.

  • Cannot start vmware converter

I am at my wits end and I thought that I'll never ask publicly a question as simple as that: I installed Virtual Center 2.5 and want to run vmware converter. services are running, but how do I start the GUI?

This should be the easiest thing in the world, but there are no shortcuts, no start, no exe files work menu entry (they are all CLI tools), and my VI client doesn't give me any options to import...

It seems to be properly installed in C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\Converter Enterprise, services run etc. I just want to see the graphical interface, so I can import a physical machine.

It seems that you have installed the Converter server. Have you downloaded the plugin converter to the VI Client? "If this isn't the case, please go to the Plugins menu-> manage Plugins... and download the plugin converter in the tab" available "within"plugin Manager"?

If the converter server is installed and registered successfully with your VirtualCenter server, you should be able to see a link to download the plug-in in the tab"available" converter plugin Manager '. "

Only after the installation of the converter plug-in, you should be able to see the VI Client options for importing a physical machine. You may have to restart the VI Client after downloading the converter VI client plug-in.

  • Installed Vmware Converter 4.0 - Linux on Ubuntu 8.10 - 64-bit client: Converter do not launch

    Hello everyone,

I installed Vmware Converter 4.0 (linux version) on Ubuntu 8.10 64-bit and the converter does not launch. I restarted the system still get the same results. I uninstalled Vmware workstation and converter and reinstalled the two components and converter still fails to launch. Someone there met by the same questions? I use both apps on a Dell Precision T7400, 64-bit system. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

You have packages to execute binary 32 bits on your 64 bit system. Binary converter are all 32 bits, so you'll need them to be able to run the converter.

On Ubuntu, try "apt - get install ia32-libs" to install the package.
