VMware converter 4 support for partitions on dynamic disks

I currently have a server physical windows 2003 which has its system and data partitions defined as dynamic disks (C and D partitions lie on disk 0-dynamic) not well why it's set up this way, it was built just like that.

The goal is to convert this virtual server and I read many forums stating that dynamic disks are not supported for vmware converter, but some cases have succeeded where the target score was a record time-basic-but-now-dynamics.

Is this the case? and if so, what alternatives can be tried to virtualize the server.

Dynamic disks are supported for Windows.  The resulting virtual machine will only basic disks in a hot clone.

I would just suggest that you make a clone of hot regular and do a slight reduction in the size of the disc resulting (even if it is 1 MB).

Second, ensure that the system starts out of the c:\ partition and it is marked as a partition active and has a file boot.ini in the root.

Kind regards

I'll always be able to use the recovery on the dynamic disk partition? And if I create recovery discs, they will work on the dynamic disk or will it convert back to base?

It can work with Easus software, but I'm sure that you need to remove this extra partition before conversion back is possible.

If you need an extra partition, look HERE page on the use of the recovery partition or delete to free up hard disk to create a new partition without conversion by burning a resumption of course the value of dynamic_after.

    Dear Sirs

Is there an agent yet for linux especially Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.  With the Android development picking up speed, we have a real need to have our developers.  The main thing that is necessary for us is the USB redirection to the prompt of the client running XP/Windows 7 or even a thin client for them to download cores to our material connected to the customer.  Thanks in advance, if anyone knows of other solutions, it would be really appreciated.

Are you talking about Office VDI or on the side of client to end-users.

There is a VMware View Client for Linux, this will allow Linux machines to connect to a broker and load a Windows VDI image.

However it is not a VMware View Agent for Linux that allow a remote desktop Linux to be negotiated through the infrastructure of the view to a device from end user customers.

There are rumors of people for the agent Windows runs under Linux using wine and Rdesktop but no one seems to have posted a shot-by-shot full of way to account and then that would be completely supported the point of view of VMware.

  • technical support for win 2008r2

    Hello

    I use ESXi 4.0

When VMWare does not support for Windows Server 2008r2?

Windows Server 2008 R2 is developed by Microsoft, while ESX 4 is developed by VmWare, so support it you should ask MS. Beacuse for now WS2k8R2 is not available in GA, you should use corporate licemse to get it.

If you mean support virtual machines with this OS - it is already available now, but full support of this OS will be available only after the release of GA of OS.

  • snapshots and dynamic disks

    All,

    VMware documentation States the following:

    • You can not go back to a snapshot with dynamic disks, so suspended snapshots are not used when you restore dynamic disks. Snapshot technology has no visibility into the dynamic disks. Dynamic disks are generally known as specific files of Microsoft systems.

Dies of what it means that they are not supported at all, or just suspended snapshots are not supported? What confuses me, is that the snapshot technology has no visibility to dynamic disks.

Well, that needed to be corrected.

    According to vmware:

Do not use the VMware snapshots for backup of dynamic disks. If you take a snapshot of a dynamic disk (specific Microsoft file system), you will not be able to go back to the snapshot. Snapshot technology has no visibility into the dynamic disks and is unable to preserve the State of suspend to disk files.

    Read this: VMware vSphere 5.1

So the overall production is no snapshot will be supported in dynamic disks that the State called 'suspended' will not effect and can not make any changes it all by making the previous snapshot version.

    Hope you guessed it.

I am at the step #2 (specify the Destination) and I expect to converter to allow me to choose a path to store the hard files.  However, 'Destination Type' does not have any selection - only 'VMWare Infrastructure virtual machine' is available.  (also there is input to the server, username, and password fields)

    Thank you

    Hello

using vmware converter 4.01 when virtual do physical power machines Linux the only available destination is ESX (i) server.

One possible way to solve this handicap can be what makes an image of the Linux system using one of support for the products of the image and then use the vmware converter to set up the image of Linux box as a source and destination that it doesn't have to be a server ESX (i)

If it comes to an eventual conversion, you can use a trial license with the product of the image (e.g. acronis true image or norton ghost).

I finally found the guilty service.

It was pcmonitor monitor/remote control software. Once I stopped it is service vmware converter could get the capacity of the physical drives.

It is rather curious because I made several servers P2V conversions using this software (so far the last one two weeks ago - the difference between that server and this one was that the first was not a domain controller).

Hopefully this thread will help others in the future.

This isn't a bug, it is a limitation of the converter. It is stated in the documentation. Converter considers that any machine under tension like physics. It cannot convert powered on Linux machines to hosted (i.e. Workstation/Fusion) destinations.

A solution would be to convert it to ESX and then convert the (from) power off the VM power to the workstation.

Error: Impossible to partition the disk of destination.

FAILED: an error occurred during conversion: "CalculateGPTPartitionLocations failed!"

Conversion of GPT partition is available vcenter converter 5.1 and higher, so the GPT partition on the source server will not be a problem.

    Anyone encounter this before?

    Hello

Unfortunately there is a bug with Linux P2V Converter when the destination drive is greater than 2 TB (is not whether TPG, it's size). Sorry for the inconvenience.

The solution would be to reduce the volumes instead of destination and/or their distributed on multiple disks. Another solution would be to leave unchecked high-volume and clone them manually after the conversion.

Another misfortune is that these workaround solutions are not possible in your case - the root volume occupies approximately 4.3 TB, and the two 'start-up' and '-' are needed to perform a conversion with the reconfiguration.

The options I can think of are:

-make a manual P2V, i.e. to create the destination (with partitions, logical volumes and base) computer created and formatted, clone the data (for example the converter uses tar via ssh) and manually configure the virtual machine. The final step is, fixing/etc/fstab, installation of GRUB and rebuild the initrd image

    -install new and copy data

-Optionally divides the volume of root on the source machine if possible and then convert it. For example, to add a new drive temporarily and move some data so that all volumes become smaller than 2 TB.

    Kind regards
