questions about snapshot

(my first post here... Please let me know if this isn't in the right place)

I have a few questions on the snapshot after reading a bunch of KB articles:

http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1025279

-Don't use any single snapshot for more than 24 to 72 hours.

Most of my live pictures for a long time and I have not noticed any problems. I do not understand why such suggestion.

http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1013163

' In this example, the process took about 64 seconds... ". »

This sounds like the take a snapshot on a production server might be a risky company is - it true?

http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1003302

-I see that consolidate you option on vSphere and it also indicates if a virtual machine needs it or not, but what are the criteria? I understand that if you take a snapshot, the content of the link delta gets grouped in the parent disk, but when should you do consolidate without deleting?

When you create a snapshot, a delta VMDK is created for each VMDK. These delta VMDK can grow bigger as size put into service of the VMDK. The problems are to have a free space on data warehouses. The longer a snapshot around, he can take to commit the changes when you remove it. In addition, to commit the changes, you must have enough free space on the data store equal space in service of the virtual machine itself.

I saw snapshots is damaged after staying close to a lot of time. In addition, the more instant stored with a virtual machine, more corruption risks.

I manipulated the environments with lots of snapshots and it was rough. I had the VMs is damaged and must be restored from backups on a regular basis.

I avoid them when I can.

Backup software is a better choice. As Veeam!

  • Question about snapshots and virtual machines

    Hi all

I have a small question about snapshots. I use VMware for about 6 months and I read about snapshots and how they work but still have a question to make sure that I understand how it works and it will work the way I think it works.

I have a Windows 2003 server, which is a virtual machine. I have an application that uses MSDE database. I want to upgrade the database to MS SQL 2005, but to do this I need to back up the MSDE database, uninstall MSDE, and then install SQL 2005 and move the SQL database. This happens on the same VM.

What I was thinking if I well Snapshots correctly is to snap turned the virtual machine before doing anything. Then do my upgrade steps and see if everything works. If its all messed up so I should be able to return to my shot and everything should be the way he had. What is the good? One of the main reasons I moved the server VM was because of this upgrade.

After reading the documentation for the snapshots, it's how I undestood it. Pretty much any change could be reversed with snapshots. I wish just they had put in a few examples in the PDF file. Also it would be the same for all type of grades of the OS? Could I snapshot a Windows 2000 Server, and then "in the upgrade of the square" to Windows 2003? I've cloned a VM to do this but was curious about whether snapshots would be just as easy.

    Thanks for your help.

    That is right.

Exactly the same thing for the upgrades of the OS.

Perhaps the most important thing with the snapshots is to keep an eye on them and don't let them sit too long or become too big.  You have described the use cases are very good uses for snapshots.  Just make sure you have a solid plan with a schedule set, so that you can come back or validate changes before the snapshot becomes too large.

    Good luck!

  • Question about snapshot

When you take a snapshot, it takes a lot of disk space?  It backup only the minimum space required?  Does really make a completely new "backup" of the current state?

  • Question about snapshots, then I only roll back and not before?

If I took a snapshot 2 weeks ago and now the developer realized he had something that they deleted that they actually needed but I need all the code they have written in the past 2 weeks can take a snapshot today and then return to the snapshot 2 weeks ago so they can copy what they need and then roll forward to the snapshot that I took today? Thank you.

    Yes you can but...

First make sure you you create a new capture instant - if not the work of the last two weeks will be lost when you return.

Then use snapshotmanager and use "go to" and then tap on the snapshot 2 weeks ago.

Once started in this - copy the files to a network share.

When you can use "go to" once again to jump into the future

  • I'm confused about snapshot...

    Hi all

OK, probably a newbie question here, but I got a snapshot that deserves deletion, but after having read about it in the vmware KB, I'm a little worried.

Here's what I heard in these two KBs:

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1025279

    http://www.VMware.com/support/WS5/doc/ws_learning_files_in_a_vm.html

    for example:

    1 snapshot taken of VM

    2. Subsequently, all changes made to the VM are saved in the snapshot, not the original image file hard drive

    3. as a result, the snapshot push continues until running out us of space or delete the snapshot.

Here's my confusion: if I delete the snapshot, not it cancels all the changes that I made?

Another cofusion I have, is why are updated snapshots grow continuously? Why not set a limit?

Thank you guys for your help

    Davy

    Welcome on you community.

Here's my confusion: if I delete the snapshot, not it cancels all the changes that I made?

No, the "Delete" button actually merges data from the delta drive (snapshot) in the basic disk, i.e. to preserve all changes.

Another cofusion I have, is why are updated snapshots grow continuously? Why not set a limit?

With the creation of a snapshot, all subsequent changes to the virtual disk are written to the disk of delta. Given that the guest can actually access the complete virtual disk size, delta drive can reach on the put into service (the size you entered when creating the VM) size of the virtual disk.

  • Question about moving linked clones

I have a question about moving around related clones. Here is the configuration:

PC running 7 Workstation and has an image of Windows XP existing on this subject.

PC B 7 Workstation is running and also has its own image of Windows XP on it.

I create a clone linked image on the PC to XP and create another clone bound B PC XP image that is out there.

Now, I know that as long as the linked clones can access their parents, they will work very well. My question is, how is it that when I Exchange clones related - i.e. copy clone related, I did on the PC and put it on the PC B and copy the linked clone, I made on PC B and move it to PC A - how to make these two linked clones still work fine? They connect to a parent, but not the parent of origin where they have been cloned. It is tested and working 100% with absolutely no problems or problems at all. Can someone explain this to me please? Thank you!

Can you please tell me what it means CID?

Each virtual disk (basic and Flash disks disks) has a unique identifier (CID). A virtual disk of the snapshot also contains information on the CID to his record parent (parentCID) to ensure that the drive chain is consistent.

What happens if you work with a linked clone and let's say in this XP image, you install a program...

A linked clone is equal to a snapshot. Once you create a snapshot, all changes are written to the instant vmdk file and the parent remains intact vmdk file. As long as you provide the same disk parent a clone or snapshot, you can copy it as you like and the newly installed applications will appear because they are actually stored in the instant vmdk...

See http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1015180 for more details on the functioning of the snapshots

  • EBS 12.1.3: a few questions about cloning

    Hello

We have EBS 12.1.3 on AIX 7.1.

A few questions about the cloning of level shared environment of application layer non-shared application environment. We followed 'Cloning Oracle Applications V12 with rapid Clone [ID 406982.1]'

    Environment (shared application layer) source:
-Two nodes in the active application and LBS
-A database of active and a passive database configuration with Oracle Data Guard.
-Terminate SSL at the load balancer
    -Updated CFP implementation

Environment target (level app not shared):
-A single node of the application active
    -One data node active
    -Without SSL
    -No PCP

After the cloning was completed, we noticed the following problems in the target system:

    (1) home page is not available because application $CONTEXT_FILE layer always contains the endpoint "https" and ssl settings.

    Workaround solution:

Change (with text editor) layer Application $CONTEXT_FILE as follows.
    < webentryurlprotocol oa_var = "s_webentryurlprotocol" custom = "yes" > http < / webentryurlprotocol >
    < sslterminator oa_var = "s_enable_sslterminator" > # < / sslterminator >
    < login_page = "s_login_page" custom = 'yes' oa_var > http://myhost.mydomain.com:8000/OA_HTML/AppsLogin < / login_page >
    < externURL oa_var = "s_external_url" custom = "yes" > http://myhost.mydomain.com:8000 < / externURL >

Run the automatic configuration service and application layer.

Is there a better solution and supported for this?

    (2) simultaneous managers do not work properly, because they still have old names of node (used in the CFP in the source system). The solution is used:

    1. connect to the EBS GUI web and delete all nodes of all concurrent managers.
2 shutdown application layer. Check that all concurrent managers have been extinguished. If not, kill the process manually
    3. as a user apps run cmclean.sql
    4 restart the application layer

Is there a better solution for this?

    (3) database ARCHIVELOG mode nonarchivelog mode changes in the target system. Is anyway to prevent this?

    (4) in addition, we would like to make a full clone (app + db levels) of production without closing the application. Is this possible? What would be the best documents to describe it? In Production, we have Oracle Data Guard physical standby installation as per "Note technique Oracle: Business Continuity for Oracle E-Business release 12 Using Oracle 11g Physical Standby Database [1070033.1 ID]. This can be used when executing a clone of warm for the database, right? What application layer? The steps in 406982.1 include AutoConfig in what application level should be running down. Must the application be broken when running "to maintain the Snapshot information?"

    (5) one last question (not related to cloning). Oracle Enterprise Manager console webUI has recently stopped working in IE8. For example, https://myhost.mydomain.com:5501 / em gives "cannot display the Page. It was working properly last week. In Firefox, the same link works fine. Any ideas how to solve this problem?

Thanks for your replies in advance.

No, you must modify the context manually and run the automatic configuration.

You follow the best approach. You could update the details of the server node if you wish.

    (3) database ARCHIVELOG mode nonarchivelog mode changes in the target system. Is anyway to prevent this?

By default, the quick Clone will create the target in noarchivelog mode database.

    (4) in addition, we would like to make a full clone (app + db levels) of production without closing the application. Is this possible? What would be the best documents to describe it? Fix.

What application layer? The steps in 406982.1 include AutoConfig in what application level should be running down. Must the application be broken when running "to maintain the Snapshot information?"

You can copy the files from the application tier node, while demand is rising. And, there is no need to stop the application to run "to maintain the Snapshot information."

    (5) one last question (not related to cloning). Oracle Enterprise Manager console webUI has recently stopped working in IE8. If it works from a browser, then it should not be a problem of EM. Have you tried another client and see if it works? Have you changed a setting in your Internet Explorer browser? Please make sure you add the URL of the EM to the list of trusted sites.

  • Question about AWR

    Hello

I have a few question about AWR:

    (1) which means the metric % CPU Non-Parse?
    (2) the wait time event CPU means: the total amount of time CPU used during snapshot, is that correct?
    (3) indicating the Parse CPU to analyze Elapsd % ratio of 200.00?

Can you suggest what the argument of the UC Parse to parse Elapsd % ratio of 200,00 specifies? In one of my AWR report, I get this value of 200%. -Given that the target is 100%, is 200% of the abnormal value, I have to do something?

If you can not make sense a report, check the underlying data. In this case, the Instance activity statistics: "parse time cpu ' and 'analysis elapsed time '. I think you'll find that time cpu is greater than the time - suggesting that the see you a measurement error, especially if times are both very small anyway. Having done this, you can compare the "analysis time cpu" with time CPU anyway to see if there is any point in worrying about the time cpu spent in analysis.

I just ordered a HP 50 g graphic calculator! I have a few questions about this so hang on tight! What is the USB connector on the calculator? Mini-USB, micro USB, or is it a connector owner, "custom". Then, it would be possible to connect a keyboard to the HP 50 g by using the USB Port? Is there a program that would make this possible? (I doubt it would work if you plug it..) I have a Mini-USB to female USB 2.0 connector. So I could just plug the keyboard right, provided that the port on the calculator is a Mini-USB Port. If this is not so that I could use my female to female USB adaptor to connect the keyboard.
