Questions on the host memory usage

I was wondering if someone could give some insight on the following situation. We vSphere host set upwards with 32 GB of RAM. On this, we have 10 VMware View desktops and a couple Server VMs. We have configured each in order to have 2 GB of RAM. The host is showing an alarm for the host memory usage, but if you look at each of the virtual machines Windows XP, memory is granted way superior to the active memory. We have no reserve set and actions are set to normal. I wonder why the system reports a memory constraint when the largest part of the memory is alocating is not active.  In addition, the shared memory is showing 0. So this means that the memory page sharing does not locate? Am I missing something?

ESX has called fresh General.  A virtual machine has 2 ways to manage memory.  a physical machine has one, physical RAM, and when this physical RAM disappeared, the operating system is left with only one option, Exchange.

VM works the same way.  A material divides the virtual machine into small sections, only they have hard limits.  So your VM is 2G, the operating system and virtual machine sees only 2 GB of RAM.  When this RAM was gone, the operating system must decide where the extra RAM is come.  Since it is a Vritual machine, the RAM of the machine can ALSO be swapped.

So, when you create a virtual machine, and you do not have reservations, you say that the Virtual Machine to get the RAM of the host, if this fails, get from a pagefile on the RAM disk.  If not THEN the operating system can use internal swap, but ESX requires a virtual machine to use his 'balloon' driver to lead you to the top of RAM internal and fool the operating system into thinking that he MUST use internal swap. It is probably where you are confused.

The use of the RAM that you see is the virtual machine, taking all THE RAM of the host.  If the host has say 48GB of RAM, and you have the run of the 10 mV, which is more than 20 GB of RAM in use.  There is a LOT of RAM left other virtual machines, so in this case, the memory of the host is high (use), but not ACTIVE, which means allocated for the virtual machine, but the OS is not really 'use' for the moment.

When you add multiple virtual machines, you will see this fall.  Keep in mind they can really share the memory too, so among those 20 VM with VM similar (like Windows), they are all windows (suggests) and 30% of that share these 20 VM, so 30% 20 GB is 7 GB, so 13 GB that is actually used, so in a perfect world, ideal conditions your host should be about 15 GB used probably less active 6 GB, but EACH VM shows 2 GB of memory host, right?

It's normal.  When one approaches the limit of host memory that these figures will change, from OS and need and that the BONE... and to complicate things even more, reservations and VM limits and priority will ALSO skew the numbers.

Isn't fun ESX?

  • Relationship between memory of comments and the host memory usage

    Hello

I noticed today that the memory usage of my cluster rose close to 90% in all of the blades. I checked and found that a number of virtual machines is everyone using over 3 GB of memory host. When I went in the performance monitor for each of these virtual machines, they used only a maximum of 400 MB.

How the memory usage of comments relate to the host memory usage, and how I can reduce the amount of memory used host so I do not have a performance hit through the cluster?

  • Do not allow the virtual machine to power on if the host memory usage over 75%?

    Hi all

I'm looking for a way to do not allow the power of virtual machines on if the clutser average memory usage is greater than 75%, or if its corresponding host memory usage is greater than 75%.

    Any idea.

    Thank you very much

    Hey Valot,.

One way to achieve this is HA admission control that does not allow a virtual machine to be turned on if the availability constraints are not met

  • Linked Clone - host memory usage

    Hello

I have 2 separate infrastructure spacing to air both view currently running 4.0.1 with XP SP3 clients.

    Infrastructure 1

    • the host is HP DL380 G5 - 32 GB of RAM. (ESX 4.0 U1)

    • clones linked XP run at the host 400 MB average memory usage by linked clone

    Infrastructure 2

    • the hosts are 2 x HP DL380 G6 - 60 GB of RAM. (ESX 4.0 U1)

    • clones XP related work to the host 1035 MB average memory usage by linked clone

These XP images are of the same generation, but on the more powerful G6 hosts, they run twice the host memory, which is make my ability to activate HA on this cluster.

Does anyone know why these linked clones could be chewing so much more memory host? Half of them are not yet recorded.

The cpu:s in the G6 is probably using "Main Pages", then the TPS will not take effect until the memory starts to be overcommited

If this is the reason why there is no need to be worried, you can try to disable the support of large Pages by changing the following setting:

Goto, dialog advanced settings, choose Mem. Mem.AllocGuestLargePage the value 0

  • How can I check the JVM memory usage?

    Hi all

I had a number of applications that run in Weblogic running in the same JVM. Is there a way to monitor the memory usage of the JVM heap for a particular application?

  • Question on the extension memory on the Satellite A80 117

I have a question about the compatibility of memory.
(The A8-117 is a Centrino 1.6 GHz (Pentuin M 730 processor) with Frontal 533 MHz bus and 2 MB of level 2, Intel® 915GM Express chipset)

At the moment I have 1 chip of 512 MB (333 MHz, 2.5 CL) installed. I intend to switch to 1.5 or 2 GB. So what bothers me is: can I install a DDR2 533 MHz modules on this laptop (in this case the old 333 MHz one out)?
Official website of Toshiba only 333 MHz DDR are provided, so that the 915GM express chipset allowes it.

If it is not possible to 533, I guess I'll just buy 1 extra GB of 333 MHz DDR.

    Thanks in advance!
    Bostjan

    Hello

At first, I want to say, which is always recommended to use RAM compatible and tested modules. On this way, you will be sure that it will work well and without any problems.

According to the specifications of the laptop you can upgrade RAM to 2 GB max and compatible modules are: PC2700 512 MB (PA3312U - 2M 51) and 1024Mo PC2700 (PA3313U-2M1G).

You can use faster RAM modules, but for me it is really not necessary. The specification of the laptop is the 333 MHz bus speed and faster modules will be not useful for laptop runs faster. It is best to buy 2 x PA3313U-2M1G and you will have no problem and portable will runs much more quickly than before.

  • Question for the host resource

    Hello

We have 1 blade that hosts a physical SQL Server on it. The resources of this blade are 10 total to 20 cores processors and 512 GB of RAM on it. We want to virtualize it soon, but we don't have any other guests that we could use this size. We have a few available hosts that are 8 to 16 cores CPU and 256 GB of RAM. I was hoping that I could create a cluster with 2 of these hosts and virtualize the largest physical machine in the cluster. I know that when I virtualize this machine, he will live on one of the hosts at any given time. My question is if these hosts would be 'pool' their resources so that this machine could use more than a single host would offer it. Is it possible at all or not? If not is there another work around for this problem I have?

    We are on vSphere 5.5

    Thank you

My question is if these hosts would be 'pool' their resources so that this machine could use more than a single host would offer it. Is it possible at all or not? If not is there another work around for this problem I have?

No, the maximum resource that can use a particular virtual machine will be limited by the maximum available on a single host computer running this VM particular resource. Workaround is to add more physical resources on the host or create the virtual computer with limited resources. Are you sure that your virtual machine uses really 20 the processor cores and 512 GB of RAM? Most of the workload running on the physical server uses all resources.

  • The host memory, comments and memory

I'm the stage of tests to understand how RAM is run on a host ESXi 5.x.

I have create a new Windows Server 2008 R2 with 16 GB of RAM and installed VM.

The virtual machine is running wit a logged-on user and no activity.

vSphere client reports Host MEM - MB as 11325 (why not 16000?) and guest mem % 53% (decreasing very sloowly).

Reports of Windows task manager memory is 1 GB.

How can I read these data?

What is the amount of RAM that is really used?

How can I change the data in vSphere client, as the old good F5 produced no visible results?

    Marius

    Hi guy,

If the host is not constrained memory, when you turn the virtual computer, assign the needs of memory from the operating system. Then, the memory is not recovered because it didn't claim to host you.

I don't know why you see only 11000GB... can you give us screen printing, for this virtual machine, "resources Alocation"?

Installed Vmware tools in the virtual machine?

When you host is limited, so act balooning and the memory of the host for this computer virtual will decrease.

    Kind regards

  • Windows 2008 using all the it is assigned the host memory

    Hi all

We have just started using ESX 4. Using the Update Manager I applied update 1 and all patches.

I installed a couple of servers, most of them are windows 2003. However, I installed a windows 2008 machine and awarded 8 GB of memory.

As you can see in the screenshot the guest uses very little, but still it shows that it uses 8 GB memory of the host.

We had this same behavior with an earlier version of ESXi 4, but that is resolved now. (I don't know how, but I guess that through patch).

There is not much to find on this, but I can't imagine I'm the only one, or I'm doing something wrong (also not entirely unlikely )

    Someone at - it ideas?

This is an expected behavior of Windows from 6.0 (Vista / 2008).  See this article on Superfetch.

  • Question about the host Username in Ent. Bishop favorite of the credentials

    Good afternoon

I'll put the credentials in the 'preferences' of MA page.

I created a user named 'Oracle' with password 'abc123' (without the quotes of course).

I have connected by using this user name and RDP'ed in the host of another computer using these credentials as well (to be absolutely sure that the username and password are correct). I was a member of the administrators and the ora_dba user on the oracle host.

When I enter this user name and password in the host user name and the host word of the EM fields and select 'Test', I get the error:
"Connection to Orahost.john.local as user Oracle failed."
I tried this, the host and a client, logged in as the user Oracle itself (on the host) and logged on as a different user. I still get the above error.

Question: Why isn't he accept this name to username/password combination. The user is valid and the password is correct.

    Thank you for your help,

    John.

    OK then please see.

  • Question on the extension memory by Satellite A100 PSAA9E

The original manual (1997) for this machine says 2-concerts is the maximum memory for this sub - 2 machine, but today compatible Gig 2 chips are available.

Can I switch to 4 GB? (or is there another aspect of this machine which limits the memory to 2-concerts?)

    Hello

Upgrade memory depends on the chipset.
If the chipset would support only 2 GB, you can then use max 2 GB.

I think that if the manual says that 2 GB is max which is possible, then it will be good

Of course you can check that as well.
Verify your Intel chipset and then look on the Intel site for more details and properties of this chipset.

  • Questions about the upgrade memory for gateway P55C-200

It comes from an old computer from 1997. I'm trying to update and upgrade for the treatment of text and with older games who have worked on it, even if a bit slower that I liked. MDK is a favorite. I add that a little more RAM will help. It has windows 95 on it. He is currently in good working condition. I have a perfectly good printer and a scanner that I can't use it on my other computers with operating systems newer, but which works well on this one. The computer has a card? IRE 32meg with a spare slot, CPU Pentium 200 HZ and a 4G IDE hard drive.

What type of card m? IRE this computer accepts it and how can I add? The existing memory card has no info about it. I visited the manufacturing sites of memory several, and they come in white for this computer only. I think maybe it's SDRAM PC66, but I don't know. Any information would be appreciated.

I just ordered two 128 meg sticks, clock 4, CL3, PC66. Who will be my max at the limit of my system to 256 meg. I still don't know whether or not the card memory factory was PC66, as there was no label on it, and my manual is non-specific, because it covers a group of computers that use the same series of motherboard. The seller did some research and said the Board recommended will work for me. He gave me a link http://panam.gateway.com/s/motherbd/intel/m00260/m0026023.shtml that my Board is covered by the listed series. I guess in a week or so I'll know. Thank you all for your help.

  • Question about the upgrade memory for my Satellite M40-307

Sorry for the newbie question. But if I have 512 MB of memory for the time being, what are my upgrade options?

Do I have to buy pairs of memory? So I can or buy 2 x 1 GB = 2 GB, or 2 x 512 MB = 1 GB + 512 existing. Or can I say just buy a single 512 MB or 1 GB chip?

Since no one wants to answer:
    1. check if your laptop supports Dual Channel Ram (it should be, but just see the manual to be sure)
    2. knowledge of what type of RAM you have. This will add or remove a possibility of upgrade

The thing with Dual Channel is, that you have the best performance if you use 2 RAM of the same type (really of the same type: company, size...)
    you could:
    3. Add a 512 MB of RAM of the same type you have
3 b. buy 2 pieces of new RAM of the same type (1 GB + 1 GB, or 2 + 2 GB) and do not forget that your laptop supports this quantity (once again: manual to check)

You will also find in the manual, if your computer supports DDR or same DDR2 RAM (faster)

If you have lost your manual, you can download it here on the toshiba Web page

    I hope I could help a little.
