The host memory, comments and memory

I'm the stage of tests to understand how RAM is run on a host ESXi 5.x.

I have create a new Windows Server 2008 R2 with 16 GB of RAM and installed VM.

The virtual machine is running wit a logged-on user and no activity.

vSphere client reports Host MEM - MB as 11325 (why not 16000?) and guest mem % 53% (decreasing very sloowly).

Reports of Windows task manager memory is 1 GB.

How can I read these data?

What is the amount of RAM that is really used?

How can I change the data in vSphere client, as the old good F5 produced no visible results?

Concerning

Marius

Hi guy,

If the host is not constrained memory, when you turn the virtual computer, assign the needs of memory from the operating system. Then, the memory is not recovered because it didn't claim to host you.

I don't know why you see only 11000GB... can you give us screen printing, for this virtual machine, "resources Alocation"?

Installed Vmware tools in the virtual machine?

When you host is limited, so act balooning and the memory of the host for this computer virtual will decrease.

Kind regards

Leandro.

  • Relationship between memory of comments and the host memory usage

    Hello

I noticed today that the memory usage of my cluster rose close to 90% in all of the blades. I checked and found that a number of virtual machines is everyone using over 3 GB of memory host. When I went in the performance monitor for each of these virtual machines, they used only a maximum of 400 MB.

How the memory usage of comments relate to the host memory usage, and how I can reduce the amount of memory used host so I do not have a performance hit through the cluster?

  • Questions on the host memory usage

I was wondering if someone could give some insight on the following situation. We vSphere host set upwards with 32 GB of RAM. On this, we have 10 VMware View desktops and a couple Server VMs. We have configured each in order to have 2 GB of RAM. The host is showing an alarm for the host memory usage, but if you look at each of the virtual machines Windows XP, memory is granted way superior to the active memory. We have no reserve set and actions are set to normal. I wonder why the system reports a memory constraint when the largest part of the memory is alocating is not active.  In addition, the shared memory is showing 0. So this means that the memory page sharing does not locate? Am I missing something?

ESX has called fresh General.  A virtual machine has 2 ways to manage memory.  a physical machine has one, physical RAM, and when this physical RAM disappeared, the operating system is left with only one option, Exchange.

VM works the same way.  A material divides the virtual machine into small sections, only they have hard limits.  So your VM is 2G, the operating system and virtual machine sees only 2 GB of RAM.  When this RAM was gone, the operating system must decide where the extra RAM is come.  Since it is a Vritual machine, the RAM of the machine can ALSO be swapped.

So, when you create a virtual machine, and you do not have reservations, you say that the Virtual Machine to get the RAM of the host, if this fails, get from a pagefile on the RAM disk.  If not THEN the operating system can use internal swap, but ESX requires a virtual machine to use his 'balloon' driver to lead you to the top of RAM internal and fool the operating system into thinking that he MUST use internal swap. It is probably where you are confused.

The use of the RAM that you see is the virtual machine, taking all THE RAM of the host.  If the host has say 48GB of RAM, and you have the run of the 10 mV, which is more than 20 GB of RAM in use.  There is a LOT of RAM left other virtual machines, so in this case, the memory of the host is high (use), but not ACTIVE, which means allocated for the virtual machine, but the OS is not really 'use' for the moment.

When you add multiple virtual machines, you will see this fall.  Keep in mind they can really share the memory too, so among those 20 VM with VM similar (like Windows), they are all windows (suggests) and 30% of that share these 20 VM, so 30% 20 GB is 7 GB, so 13 GB that is actually used, so in a perfect world, ideal conditions your host should be about 15 GB used probably less active 6 GB, but EACH VM shows 2 GB of memory host, right?

It's normal.  When one approaches the limit of host memory that these figures will change, from OS and need and that the BONE... and to complicate things even more, reservations and VM limits and priority will ALSO skew the numbers.

    Isn't fun ESX?

  • How to configure the network between the host (Windows 8) and Guest (Linux)

    Hello

I am trying to configure network between the host (Windows 8) and Guest (Linux). Guest on VMware Workstation 8.

Using this network, I want to configure putty so that I can access comments linux to a PuTTY that is installed on the host (Windows 8).

    Thank you.

    Abdul

To obtain external access to comments (access the guest from the host), you must configure the IP static within the guest (Linux) as below and restart the network (service network restart)

eth0 is a dynamic IP (DHCP) to get wireless internet access

eth1 is a static IP address

  • the host is disconnected and require restart to vcenter

Get a problem for the host is disconnected and only a reboot of the host gets their return to vcenter.

Is there an upgrade performed recently at 5.5.

  • Windows 2008 using all the it is assigned the host memory

    Hi all

We have just started using ESX 4. Using the Update Manager I applied update 1 and all patches.

I installed a couple of servers, most of them are windows 2003. However, I installed a windows 2008 machine and awarded 8 GB of memory.

As you can see in the screenshot the guest uses very little, but still it shows that it uses 8 GB memory of the host.

We had this same behavior with an earlier version of ESXi 4, but that is resolved now. (I don't know how, but I guess that through patch).

There is not much to find on this, but I can't imagine I'm the only one, or I'm doing something wrong (also not entirely unlikely )

    Someone at - it ideas?

This is an expected behavior of Windows from 6.0 (Vista / 2008).  See this article on Superfetch.

  • Run code on the host target RT and FPGA

    Hi all

I'm sorry if I ask a question to repeat. I searched for this a bit and couldn't find a solution.

I'm trying to run a single VI (be it on RT compactRIO or on the connected host PC) and enforce the code on the host PC and target the FPGA code RT. I currently code that runs on the host PC computer that opens the FPGA reference and executes code FPGA, but I don't know how to do this with a VI on the target of RT. Any advice/help would be great. Thank you!

    Brandon

You are not far from your goal. But you need to at least

    1. Update FPGA code (Bitfile) containing your code to run on the FPGA.
    2. An executable compiled for your goal of RT, which is set to autostart.
You can use the code from my first post as a starting point. Compile, deploy and set it to autostart on your target of RT.
    3. An executable compiled for the host machine. that your user will begin.
You can use the code in my first post, maybe load IP address, Port etc. of the Ini file settings.

If you double-click on the exe file on your host computer it will open an application reference to your target computer of RT and call the VI on the target machine. This is how you run code on your RT. From this RT code you can download and run the FPGA (bitfile) to your FPGA code or control which is already running the FPGA by controlling a state machine code. Load more screws to your memory of RT targets and call them from your host to add more functionality if you need to.

  • The host VMware workstation and multi-core CPU

Apologies if this has already been answered, but all my research to turn questions about processors how can specify in a virtual machine. It's not what I'm after here.

I want to know is the use of VMware workstation (v6 and v7) is available on a multi-core worksation host physical cores.

I have a scenario where we have several virtual machines containing sensitive coding environments. The material that they are on is a little old and we don't have the time or the knowledge to recreate systems (a combination of Matlab, DSpace and some custom coding). Our only option (and we did it for a couple with success so far) is to create virtual machines of these workstations.

Which is absolutely essential for us is the material we choose VMs on host. Virtual machines will use simple/double/processors virtual.

In order to choose the correct hardware platform, I need to know if VMware workstation is running an instance of the virtual computer within a single processor (in this case is the reduced performace?), or if there are multithreaded and make the most of the hardware it will run on.

(We are not welcome, never more 2 virtual machines at the same time)

Any suggestions on material would be appreciated also. I think of something based around a core of Xeon 4-6 with 12-16 GB of RAM.

    Thank you very much

    Nick

Correct, for laboratory/debugging and interaction VM Workstation is pretty good.

  • How to access the host using winscp and other application?

    Hello everyone,

I am running Redhat Enterprise (VM) on a Windows 2003 R2 host computer. Now I would like to access the Redhat Enterprise 5 via WinSCP or other Applications. Also, I need the ability to access Applications running on Redhat (access via Web service) system.

    Is this possible?

Currently I use the http://hostip:8333 / to access the console remotely. That works very well to set up the customer but for testing Applications that run in the virtual machine is not clear to me (I create Applications at the local level and they--are supposed to--communicate with the client VM, REHL). Someone had some advice for me? If you need more information, let me know!

    Thanks in advance.

If your guest use in network bridge you can access just as you acceding to any other host.

If it uses NAT you must forward the appropriate ports (22 for ssh and WinSCP for example) at the prompt by editing the NAT configuration file.
