RAID 1 & ESXi help!

I have raid 1 configured on my server ESXi ESXi installation, is to see both drives and we will settle at either, it is not my table as disk 1.

Any ideas?  Using the Intel 82801ER/ICH5R for my raid chipset.

ICH5R is a "fake RAID" feature which means that the RAID does not work without software drivers to perform RAID functions.  ESXi does not support false RAID devices, so you will need to use your ICH5R controller as controller without RAID JBOD functionality or go buy a real RAID controller.

A common option to use is a used Dell Perc 5 / 6.  These are LSI based controllers who will also provide the controller / disk health in ESXi.   You can also watch the LSI based controllers who worked with ESXi 4.

  • 2008 mac Pro Apple Raid card problems, help!

Hello, I have a mac pro 2008 with a raid set up. I want to get rid of all old raid together upwards and instead put a new ssd in the first Bay. The computer cannot read it because I think that it is always configured as a raid. Does anyone know how to make the available drive bays to new readers? You're help would be highly appreciated. I want to take the Apple Raid card so I can have an additional PCI port and I also want to get out the discs four raid. Just so I can put in a single ssd! Thank you very much.

When you remove the Apple RAID card, readers who were searched will be unreadable. You need to make backups before time, because there is no way known to them read differently.

There is a data cable, called the iPass cable connected to the motherboard to the RAID card. You must remove this cable when you remove the RAID card and reconnect the plug corresponding on the motherboard. Once you do this, you get four bays returned as SATA bays and can install any drives that you like. The problem with a lot of SSDS is that they are 2.5-inch form factor drives and may not fit on a standard sled. Users have used an IcyDock (in the 2008 version and earlier versions) or the newer technology adaptadrive:

... to get the alignment and attached straightened.

  • Software RAID and ESXi

I was intending to set up a CentOS 7 seveal VMs server and a file server. I was planning on setting up with BtrFs in software RAID 10. However, my company is looking get ESXi and wants me to get some experience with it so I'm considering now to configure the server with ESXi and all my virtual machines running on that. What I was wondering is how I can use software RAID to save what will be my main VM, install a CentOS. Will be setting up software RAID using BtrFS on the virtual machine is useless? If the drive containing the ESXi installation failed, I completely lose it?

Could I do something like install ESXi on a server on two SSDs running RAID 1, then install at least one of my virtual machines to use RAID 10 on hard drives or not because all this abstract?

    Welcome to the community,

ESXi does not support software RAID, but only "real" hardware RAID. With hardware RAID, you can set different logical volumes on different disc types, create warehouses of VMFS data on them and then decide on a per-VM basis where to store the virtual disks. You can even have several virtual disks per virtual machine and store each on a different data store.

You said install ESXi on SSD. Once started, ESXi runs in memory and can even be stored/started from an SD card or a USB device. There is no need to spend money for the SSD only install ESXi.

  • Adding a RAID card to help speed up the export (and another question reader) in first Pro CC

First of all, I read the Page Tweakers export section because that is my main concern is. First my questions, then the background and my current and proposed configurations:

Question 1: Adding a hardware RAID controller, for example an LSI MegaRAID will sufficiently remove the burden of parity management CPU on my RAID 5 software that the CPU will jump of joy and export faster?

Question 2: If true for above, then compare thoughts on adding smaller SSD for either a RAID 0 or less two RAID 0 volume volume complete HDD RAID 5. In other words, I think the purchase of four Samsung 850 Pro 128 GB SSD to put in a four disk volume to handle everything (projects/media, media, previews, export cache), or split it into two volumes of two disks of each and divide the tasks, or keep the idea of volume four disc and previews and exports on my drive HARD RAID 5 array.

The 850 are valued at SEQ write: 550 / 470 MB/s so I could get around 2000 / 1500 MB/s read/write to a disk four RAID 0 or 1/2 who, if I divided in two volumes to minimize the volume of read/write at the same time, if it really matters with these SSD?

The Tweaker page made some comments. A split is carried out the tasks between different drives, rather than a large effective RAID can really slow things down. Because SSDS are much faster than a single HARD disk, I think its more accurate than so I'm leaning towards the configuration of four discs put OS & programs on the C drive, media & projects on media on SSD (2 disks RAID 0) Cache and D (HDD RAID 5), file exchange & Previews & export on 2nd SSD RAID 0 (or combine the two RAID 0 and their functions).

Just trying to get a point of view here, since I have not bought anything yet. Any experience/stories, I would be grateful.

    My current setup of training:

My D drive is a software RAID 5 consisting of four 1 TB Western Digital RE4 (RED) 7200 RPM hard drives with CrystalDiskMark SEQ read/write of 339 / 252 MB/s.

The C drive is 500 GB SSD (Samsung 840 (not Pro) and fact 531 / 330 MB/s.) My OS, Program Files and Page file are on C and media data/files/projects, etc. that are all about the RAID drive.

    Problem:

Current configuration allows for smooth installation, just export seems slow, usually taking between two and two and a half times the video length to export. Thus, a 10 minute video takes 20-30 minutes for export. 15 minute video can take 30-40 minutes to export. The first 10% of the export of re-encoding takes less than a minute (seems fast), but it becomes slower when the final 10 or 20 percent may hang for several minutes as my system is running out of steam. So, where's the waste?

I activated the hardware acceleration (because the GPU hack my GPU is not listed) and it can break through to 25% use a few times and eat up to 600 MB of VRAM (I have 2 GB of VRAM), otherwise it is slowed down export set. The CPU can boost at 50%, but it seems either too busy.

Our calendar is simple with two video and two audio streams (a little music and especially the voices), with simple transitions (jump cuts or cross dissolves). Sometimes, we fast correct color, so that could use the GPU? Also, given that we are filming in 1080 P 60 p and 1080 export 29.97 FPS, I think who is scaling and using the GPU. I know that without the GPU, it takes much longer. I excluded buy a faster GPU because it doesn't seem to be breaking a sweat. I just need to know if my system is a bottleneck at the level of the disk hard because I am using software RAID and my disks are slow and hardware RAID will considerably reduce the processor load so it can export more quickly.

Our files are not huge in nature. Most of our clips are several MBs each. Total files in the project are between 5 GB and 10 GB for each video with Windows Media File export being 500 MB to 1.2 GB on average. Look using Panasonic Camcorders, so the original files are AVCHD, I think (.) MTS files?).

    Considerations:

    1. I think to buy (and future proofing) a LSI Logic MegaRAID 9361-8i is 12 Gb/s SAS and SATA (because some SSD current can exceed the standard 6 Gbps).

    2. I will not replace my current HDD RAID 5 as not in my budget to spend 6 or more large SSD. These discs are more important to me for temporary storage because I delete files saved once. I don't mind a few smaller SSD inexpensive if they can make a significant difference for editing and export.

I can only guess my RAID HDD is slow but the CPU is burdened by parity. I guess running RAID 10 would not really help.

    My configuration:

    my configuration:

    CPU - CPU i7 - 3930K @4.5 GHz

    RAM - G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 32 GB (4 x 8 GB) DDR3 2133 @2000

    Motherboard - ASUS P9X79 WS LGA 2011

GPU - Gigabyte GeForce GTX 660 OC 2 GB (performed the hack of compatibility list to activate hardware acceleration).

    Drive C - 500 GB Samsung SSD (programs and Windows 7 Pro 64-bit) 840.

D drive - four 1 TB WD RE4 enterprise hard drives 7200 rpm in RAID 5 software

Box - Cooler Master HAF X

CPU fan - Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO with 120 mm fan

Power - series Pro Corsair AX 850 watts 80 Plus Gold

OK, after overload of information on everything I tried (free), which might be my answer here. I went from codecs to export. When you use Windows Media File, Premiere Pro seems chugging along much slower than when you use the h.264 (not h.264 Blu - Ray). I don't know if it's because Microsoft has found a way to break it or what. But I'm the CPU usage of 70-85% on the 2 Pass of 2 as well as the use of the memory of 40% (or 12 GB). It exported in 14 minutes. Woo - hoo. I then did a similar test using Windows Media File. It took 31 minutes to export. The CPU has spent much of his time in the 30%, especially down in the 1930s mid-1940s with spike for memory usage was only 24% to 35% and 50%. Since then, I've read how h.264 codec is 'plu' for online files. It compresses better with less compression artifacts. He seems better, etc. Well, they both seemed on the same thing for me. I play both on my TV 70 "before I could comment further. In the future, I will consider a RAID controller and upgrade the HDDs to SSDS.

  • Need recommendation: A better card from PCI RAID to ESXi 3.5

I'm trying to install VMWare ESXi 3.5 on an old Dell Poweredge 750 server, which has two available PCI slots.  I know that the integrated SATA does not work and I need to have 2 x 2 TB disks installed on it, but realize that there is a maximum size of 2 TB disk volumes, so I was going to make a RAID 1 configuration with a slightly smaller total capacity of 2 TB under the limit of ESXi.

I tried with a map of 3Ware 8006, but although it recognizes my drives very well, ESXi doesn't like it (complains there is no disk to install to).  I then tried a SIL chipset cheap raid card that ESXi liked ok, but does not start at the start of.  I used the Adaptec PCI RAID cards before with great success, but I don't know if the old PCI cards to support drives of 2 TB on them.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a PCI (not PCI-e) decent, inexpensive that will support ESXi 3.5 and SATA 2 x 2 TB disks?

    Thank you

    Myles

Adaptec 2610 is PCI - X, which can be adapted to your PCI slot, but you must see if you have the space for the unused portion of the card PCI (X) to clear the components of the motherboard. PCI will be limited to 1.5 GB, so your big SATA drives will be slow. Unless you have the battery backup cache writing that read/write performance will be poor.

  • RAID in ESXi 4.0

Buenas a todos, estoy intentando instalar ESXi 4.0 in a servidor HP Proliant G6 of 110 ML, pero con 2 discos duros 2 TB in raid 1 (mirror). Antes of nada he configurado el con raid the HP utility. Me ha una unidad 2 TB logica created. Hasta aqui well.

El problema are lanzo the ESXi instalacion cuando me detecta back discos duros of 2 TB. Do not should detectarme una unidad al estar el table consists only? Decido instalar el ESXi todas maneras en the first unidad. Y cuando desde sphere accedo termino y efectivamente tengo datastore back...

Estoy perdido algo. Why me detecta back unidades if tengo formada una unidad logica in raid 1 con los discos back?

    Hola doberk:

The VMware HCL Dispones. Busca por HCL VMware en Google y you fracture a ella.

Alli tienes several pestanas, select the over-tightened al storage mas y busca por el modelo controladora than hayas chosen.

Busca in LSI una controladora SATA 1 o 2 canales. If you con una Máquina en production deberias seleccionarla tambien para cache.

    A greeting.

  • DL120 G6 Proliant Smart Array RAID with ESXi (free)

    Hello

We have ESXi running on a DL120 G6 with 8 GB of RAM, installed via the website of VMWare Go.

The server has 4 disks configured in the BIOS of the server for RAID 1 (2 and 2 mirrors).

How can I tell the server to use the RAID configuration as at the moment we seem to use only a single disc of 4.  Currently, I am able to add one of the spare disks 3 as independent data stores.

Is there a BIOS setting that I need to configure to enable ESXi to use RAID?

    Thank you

    Daren

The default RAID controller DL120 G6 is a Smart Array B110i, who is not a hardware RAID controller supported (see http://www.vmware.com/go/hcl for the supported RAID controllers) you will be able to use this controller with ESXi RAID functionality.

  • Problems with the RAID on ESXi 4

    Hello

Although I have been using VMware Server for a few years, I am beginner with ESXi and would like some advice please.

I'm putting a laboratory machine using the following environment:

    Dell PowerEdge SC1425

    3 GB RAM

disks SCSI 2 x 73 GB attached to an Adaptec 39320 b. RAID controller with integrated HOSTRAID support.

I worked on how to configure oem.tgz to recognize the RAID controller and have successfully upgraded to ESXi 4.1.0.

Where I struggle is as follows:

I wanted to install ESXi on two SCSI drives, configured as RAID1 mirror.

I started by setting up a RAID1 with the Adaptec BIOS table. The problem is that when I installed ESXi, it would not fully start, claiming that I have two drives with the same UUID.

So, I did it again, reset the controller (i.e. no RAID). This time, ESXi installed and running successfully, but as I suspected it would be started from a single disc and shows the other drive as a data store.

Is there something I'm missing here? Should I persevere with RAID1 with the Adaptec BIOS configuration, or is there something in ESXi I should use?

It does not appear on the HCL, and I expect that the card is also well supported and a RAID device. The fact that the card does not appear in the simple.map may indicate that it is an OEM version. Adaptec card BIOS can be flashed so I would check that. There are versions of pilot listed as entries of subtext of the HCL. See if there is any meaning with those.

  • RAIDs of ESXi

So I'm at a bit of a delema. I want a high availability system (err, around)...

Currently we have a machine, I can get a second, but we cannot drop 2 k $ on vCenter to give living vmachine transfers when they die (true high availability).

What I wanted to do was run a RAID, I'm uncertain on material RAIDs being as if material goes wrong, I need to go hunt down a similar card or the data on the disks are useless. Software RAID is great, but is available at the level of the VM, which means that if the OS drive dies, ESXi will start is no longer. And I can only handle the RAIDs started when equipment fires upward.

I was going to set up our virtual servers with virtual RAIDS on 2 discs so they could get the extra security of the speed and the data, but is not this backup of almost just as good as the virtual machine every night (less lose a few hours of work), this in fact also a bet of 50% that it is either the OS of the 2nd drive disk in the RAID.

Anyway, being as I'm new, what are my options to maintain a profitable facility for a small office with backup simple and fast restoration after a catastrophic failure time?

Going to be an older Poweredge 1435SC with the installation of 120 GB (main) and the 1 TB drive (storage). I have the additional external backup storage.

Not having not not 100% uptime is fine, but I'm wishing to reduce downtime and complexity as much as possible when the operating system drive fails and if RAIDing at the virtual machine level isn't worth the time. Should I keep just readers VM backups that are important? (we've got some that are volitle, and I have no 1.1 TB of backup storage, so I need to choose what to keep and what to chuck) and keep them all a single hard drive on the level of the BONE, and when things die I just reinstall ESXi and restore the virtual machines?

Only VMWare has some backup software that I can connect to ESXi and basically their migration to a backup disk every night?

Should I throw them to the tops of my arms and say "It will be fine!" and run with a hardware RAID? Am I too worried about hardware failure? Hardware RAIDs become more standard in how they are setup so that I can transfer to another machine easily?

I would have to turn off the machine to swap anyway, readers being what they do not have hot swappable bays. > >

Yes, you are being far too dramatic on the material.  Hardware RAID is your BEST high hand option.  Disk fails, using RAID 5 you can have 1 disk fails, and data are preserved, no interruption of service.  RAID 6, you can do it with 2 discs.  Fundamental difference is the performance, but I've not seen much of a difference, if any, performance.  so if you are paranoid to go with RAID 6.

SE RAID won't save your VM, it will only mean that you can continue to operate in the event of hardware failure, your VM is still subject to corruption, the user misconfigration and deletion of data within the VM OS, this RAID is only part of the picture.

If you are unable to remove $2K on VC, then you will not be able to buy backup either.  All backup solutions cost something and depending on how many you have, it could cost a lot.  Now you can use esXpress if you weren't on ESXi... esXpress does not work on ESXi, but it runs on the console version.

So, I say make a case for VC and make someone responsible for purchase VC, you need.  You see already the advantage... then fight for it.  It's less $ 150.00 per month (if you do this for the 2010 budget)... but the return on investment is HUGE in less time.  So for you VC will save you problems hardware and the management of the virtual computer.  Of course that vmotion is assuming that you have the Central SAN solution.

  • RAID and ESXI 6

I have an R410 with a Perc S300, 500 GB HD 7.2 K Sata HDs w / 16 GB of RAM - I'm looking to install ESXI 6 and failed due to unsupported S300.  Can you provide recommendations on a Perc replacement that will work with and run 6 ESXI.  Also recommended Perc supports SAS and SATA if we decided to upgrade the drives.

I saw Perc 6 / i and HD200 but do not know who would be a good replacement for the S300.

    Thank you

The H700 is really the only controller you should consider. On PERC 6 would be nice, but it is 1) a 3Gbps controller and 2) is limited to the physical drives of 2 TB. The H700 has none of these restrictions.

  • Areca 1882IX PCIE 3.0 Raid Controller - need help

I'm extremely frustrated!   I installed my new Areca Raid card and can't make it work!

First of all, has been the question of creating a driver diskette.   After hassling with tools for two hours, I finally found an old floppy drive and installed on my system.  It worked finally.

Then when I tried to install the driver, firstly it doesn't seem to install it.  I clicked on the tab + F6 during startup and, apparently, that didn't do anything.  However, it seemed he installed something.   Windows 7/64 blue armored constantly until I restored it to an earlier version.   I went through this installation bluescreen process twice!

Anyone knows tricks to make this card raid work?   Do not forget that this version PCIE 3.0, not 2.0.   Is this card ready for prime time?

If this thing does not work, is there other quality controllers will work?

    Thank you

    Dan.

    Dan,

Since I live in a country late, I always wait the availability of version 3.0 PCIe. The consequence is that I have no experience with this specific map, but the message:

    F/W detected: * SDRAM don't speed not enough *!

is irregular enough to suspect that the RAM cache is not properly installed or is defective. You can check that the module is well rigged? Otherwise I would support Areca contact. In general, they respond quickly and are very useful.

  • RAID 10 configuration help

I built my new computer and decided to go with a RAID 10 configuration. After windows installation and reboot I got a critical RAID warning during startup. I have identified the drive has failed and returned. I installed the replacement drive and I still get the same error. Is there something special that I'm supposed to do when I replace one of the disks?

Space is never the issue and speed is a raid10 alone is not enough for editing. Now, you may need to start over again, refcreating the table, reformatting and reinstalling. Don't forget to disable before you re-create the matrix.

I called once Raid10 the format of table for the paranoid in a hurry. It seems to be the opposite, since you have to start over.
