RAW to Jpeg file size rule

I wonder if there is a rule of thumb that can be used to predict the approximate size when exporting a raw file in Lr in a jpeg file.  For example, a raw average 25 MB file converting to about 5 MB jpeg with the export from Lr to 100 quality?  At about 3.5 MB with a quality of 80? …

I know that can vary in size, but when I export a collection of raw files, and I put the maximum file size for a certain amount, Lr sometimes converts images because I limited the size too small.  I would like to be able to get a handle on some sort of relationship quality/file size before you begin the export process.

I totally agree with Rob. JPEG file size limitation should not be used unless you absolutely care about the degradation of image quality. I can't imagine what application where it would be acceptable.

Effectiveness of any given quality setting JPEG compression is generally of the order of 5:1. Using a means of file size limit will be saved images with detail to very high quality setting (i.e. 90-100) and images with the details is saved to many parameters of lower quality (0-50). It's the exact opposite of what you want to do!

Unless you use a large file size limit size of exported JPEG images will probably visible JPEG artifacts. It's best to determine your threshold of acceptability for the JPEG artifacts (i.e. quality 50-70?) Use this quality setting for your exports without restriction of file size. The 'average file size' resulting will be less than with a larger file size limit.

Tips to reduce further the size of the exported JPEG images files:

(1) use conservative sharpening in the modules to develop and export (i.e. not too narrow)

(2) use the color and Luminance Noise Reduction sufficient settings to reduce visible noise in the image.

(3) make sure that 'remove the Chromatic Aberration "is checked in the color of the lenses Corrections Panel."

Following the above suggestions can reduce the size of the JPEG file exported by 50% or more, especially for raw ISO images files high.

You need Lightroom 6.0 or Lightroom CC 2015 at least to open the D7200 raw files. If you are using an older version of Lightroom, you can use the DNG format free version converter 9.0 or newer to create copies DNG that you can use with your old version of Lightroom.

Another problem with CS5 was the Bridge opens as a process in the background and must be closed in the taskbar > hidden icons before updating.

  • saving a raw to JPEG file

When I save a file as a jpeg of high quality raw, I lose a lot of information, and the image becomes much smaller when reopened. How to prevent this?

The actual size of the file in megabytes cannot be a criterion for the quality of the image. JPEG compression works differently on each image according to the content of the image. Some images compress much more than others. When you say that the JPEG is smaller, could you share the actual pixels of the raw and JPEG images dimensions. What do you use to create your JPEGs?

Just another comment. It seems to me that it would be extremely difficult to create a 50 MB JPEG image. It would be absolutely huge in size. I assumed that the site you are using allows loading of formats other than JPEG files if they allow files that large.

  • Photos, convert and replacement RAW to JPEG files

    Hello!

I've been googling and looking for forums of Apple, and I've not found a way to do it again. I'm not sure that it is still possible.

I have a MacBook pro with a nice little SSD. Take RAW photos is gourmet area, and many of them lying around. Is there a way to replace the RAW with a JPEG photo-generated file to save space?

I thought to export to JPEG, removing the RAWs and import JPEG files, but then I will lose the album information they contain.

Is there a way to transform the RAWs in JPEG, then delete the RAWs to save space? Or is it easier to simply delete?

Any response would be highly appreciated!

Export and re-import are the only way to replace the originals.

And it takes if ensure that the original RAW have been deleted from your library and iCloud, before you reimport the JPEGs or Photos will be STINKING RAW format. At least, this happened to me several times.

You could try to export and import after assigning the name of the album as a keyword. Each album individiually, export

According to reimport the photos create a form of album pictures of the last Import. You can aalso use the albumname keyword to search for them.

When all goes well, remove the keyword, you no longer need.

  • How can I transfer a photo library (raw and jpeg files) fram without loss of metadata and keywords?

How can I transfer my favorite photos library on my MacBook to another library on an external hard drive without losing metadata and keywords?

If you want to keep the metadata, you must export the images as the current versions, edited. File > export > export... images.  Then you can turn on the indicator "Tile, keys, descriptions words":

Choose a high quality for JPEG, not to lose quality.  To the RAWs export them under like TIFF picture.

You can export the RAWs as "file > export > export original unmodified" and keep it RAW, but which will not include the metadata.  And the Photos will allow you to export an XMP file with metadata, but when I tested, it did not apply the metadata when you import the RAW files again. So the best compromise for the RAW format would be to export as TIFF, another lossless format.

  • RAW 2 K file size

Right now I'm shooting 4 K RAW on The F55/R5.  The 512 GB AXSM card holds 66 min of 23.98 FPS 4K RAW.

When the new firmware will be released this month, I'll be able to shoot 2K at 23.98 frames per second.  How many minutes do I get on the same card AXSM 512?

    Thank you.

(edited by Aaron underlined mistake in the next post)

This is how I arrived at that number, it's really very simple.

1 put a card in the camera and format it.

    2. set the camera to 23.98

3 activate the HFR full scan mode - which is sets the camera (with current firmware) for the shooting of 2 K.

    4. look at how long the device says you can save on the map.  The answer is 261 minutes.

The camera doesn't care if you're shooting at 24 fps, fps 120 or 240 fps.   Note that if you change the HFR 120 to 240, the camera will say again '261 minutes"of the available recording time because this number is not based on the rate of fire, it is based on the reading rate.  Think of the map as a bucket that contains 261 minutes of 23.98 2K video.  Shooting at a higher rate does not mean that you will fill the bucket faster with a bigger pipe.

In the case where it is not clear, the reason why I turned on HFR for the calculation is just because it's the only way I can turn on 2K at the moment.

  • RAW and JPEG on the disk, only import RAW files?

I shot some photos this morning, and the camera is set up to generate a RAW and JPEG file (if it's a difference, the camera is a Panasonic Lumix GX1). I copied all the files from the SD card to a folder on an external HARD drive and then tried to import into Lightroom.

In the import dialog box, the only files he showed me import were the RA2 (Panasonic RAW) files, not JPEG files. My first thought was that he decided my name do not import duplicates - but the file names are the same, but extensions are different and the file sizes are different. Why LR would consider that these are duplicates?

Any thoughts on how to get my RAW and JPEG imported?

    Hello

    Greetings!

Yes, there is a setting in the preferences.

    Open Lightroom

Click on edit-> preferences-> Genaral or Lightroom (Windows)-> preferences-> General (MAC)

Check the box below and click ok and relaunch lightroom.

    Now import and check.

  • Why Lightroom5's copy of the RAW and Jpeg formats files in the destination folder?

    Hi all Lightroom experts.

I want to copy the RAW files of my SD dsra on my hard drive Drobo. And every time I did that Lightroom has copied BOTH raw and jpeg files

How to load Lightroom to copy only the RAW files?

Just a little disgress, actually the same problem happens in Adobe Bridge despite me by selecting only the RAW files to copy, but it always copied both!

    Any tips?

    Thank you

You can tell Lightroom to qualify alongside jpg FIRST separate photos, or treat the JPG as a file by following the instructions here:

Lightroom help | Set import preferences

If the JPG file is a sidecar, the JPG is always imported but is not displayed in your library module.

If you don't want to import the jpg files, you will need to select the RAWs, but not the jpgs in the dialog box import; or import them all and then delete the jpgs of Lightroom and your hard drive (easier, but takes a little longer). or don't shoot RAW + JPG

  • RAW and JPEG as a thumbnail?

    Hello

is it possible to display the RAW + JPEG as a thumbnail in Bridge as in Lightroom? I shoot RAW and JPEG and I see the same image 2 times. A BAD Version and a JPEG.

I want to see the two as a thumbnail. They should be grouped. So, if I erase it the RAW and JPEG version is deleted.

    Help, please!

    Kind regards

You still don't understand what I mean, and you seem to have no idea what I'm talking about. But it's OK...

Maybe you should read a little more about LR works before you write things you clearly don't know anything.

I explain it one last time: I have RAW and JPEG files. I seek only to RAW files when I sort my photos and I don't want to manually delete the JPEG images. So I wanted to bridge pile JPG + RAW together so they both deleted when I delete the image. It is not difficult to understand in fact

For those who has figured out what my problem was:

I found a script to LR that does exactly what I was looking for in Bridge :-> RAW + JPG battery

So my problem is solved and everything works fine

  • DNG vs. RAW owner files sizes

I was told that the dng files are compressed lossless files and would be physically smaller than files gross owners and started to use them in my workflow.  And this seems to be true with most Canon CR2 raw files.  However, I discovered a camera when this is not true and I am looking for a confirmation and an answer as to why.  I have both a Canon 5 d Mark III and a Canon 5 d camera.  On the Canon 5 d Mark III dng files are all smaller than the corresponding raw CR2 file.  About 17% smaller.  However on the 5 d dng files are as much as 50% more according to the raw settings.  The 5 d is a 50mp camera.  Fixed at the maximum 50 mp the dng file is smaller.  On the smallest setting, 12 mp, the file sizes are much the same.  On the medium setting 28mp file sizes can be 50% larger.  Someone knows why?  28 mp is the setting I use most of the time.

    Sparky

This happens because the raw files not full resolution are not of the actual raw files. They are already demosaiced. The unit also uses a different compression algorithm for those who is not completely without loss if I remember correctly, like the color rendition is cooked in raw/sraw. It is a very bad idea. So the advantage of size compression lossless dng only works for normal files, full resolution, raw. In general, if you shoot in raw, you really do not want to use lower resolution settings, some of these cameras offer as you get all the benefits of the raw files of this way.
