Add a new virtual disk to a very critical existing VM

Hi all,

My question is very simple. I have to add a new virtual disk to an existing Windows Server 2008 Standard virtual machine (we use vSphere 5). This machine

is very critical, because it is the server of the company files. Is there a risk to add the new virtual disk on the virtual computer? Is it better to add it with the virtual machine died, or can I also in the virtual machine running without risk? I tried with a virtual test machine and everything works fine and I know to be very paranoid, but in this moment I still feel a great responsibility on me.

Thank you all.

There is nothing wrong by adding a disk to a virtual machine, it is HOT add, that is the advantage of the SCSI layer. VMDK all use a virtual scsi controller and it is hot add capable. SO just, add it and partition.

  • Help!  How to add a new 350GB disk?

    Hi all

I was tasked with the addition of an extra 350GB disk to a virtual machine in a configuration, I discovered it's done not as easily in Lab Manager as it is in vCenter.  I cancelled the Setup and when I go into the properties of the VM I see 'add the HDD', but when I go to add the new drive with the size you want it only allows me to add a maximum of 167 GB (the remaining space on the LUN that VM is enabled) as expected.  I have a new 550 GB LUN I want to create this new drive 350GB, but I do not get a choice where to create the new disk.  Can someone help me please this seemingly simple task?  Thank you

BTW - I use Lab Manager 3.0 (2) on ESX 3.5 HP blades

If you add a new HARD disk in your virtual machine in the Lab Manager the disc is placed in the root directory of die VM.

  • What are the steps to create, format and install a new virtual disk in Windows

I swear I've scoured the Internet for days trying to find the details of this process, and I'm embarrassed to have failed in my quest to understand what I must be a very simple thing.  The best I can do is this:

Step 1: Create a new vmdk using vmware-vdiskmanager

    Step 2:?

Step 3: Get your vmdk newly formatted using vmware-mount, or using "Map Virtual Disk" of the Workstation option

Now, you will see that somewhere between step 1 and 3, it is an essential step of the new vmdk format so that it can be recognized and mounted.  Simply, I can't find any example online how to do this.  I just know someone will say "just attach to a virtual machine and format her", to which my answer is "how?  It won't let me get an unformatted disk.  When I try to go directly to step 3 after step 1, I get the following error, "error reading volume information.  Please select another file to disk.

  • Try to add a new hard disk to m7657c

So, after about 6 years, we you're still enjoying our Media Center Office and have made a few updates here and there (OS, graphics card, etc.). Now, we're tired of running out of disk space and want to add a new hard drive. Now, according to the specifications of the product (http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00794034), we should have two internal drive bays 3.5 ". Which one should be available. Where is located the?

I have removed the side and before the panels, can see where the existing HARD drive is mounted on the side of the Bay of media player owner, but I can't find any other anchor point to place a secondary HARD disk. There is a lot of power open and SATA connections, but I am at a loss to find a Bay.

Before the wreck I have my system trying to kluge something together, I want to know where the available Bay is supposed to exist.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you!

In the vSphere web 5.5 client, which is now where he should go to add a new HARD drive when you upgrade the VM version to 10... When I add one, I do not get the option to change the disk configuration.  Any ideas as to why?  It is an engine out of VM, with no snapshots:

  • How to add a new virtual machine in VMPlayer inventory?

    People,

Hello. I'm installing Oracle Database 11 g 2 RAC system using 2 nodes that are 2 Virtual Machines on top 3 VMPlayer.

Their locations are C:\VM_RAC\rac1 and C:\VM_RAC\rac2.

The original rac1 VM is created in VMPlayer 3 and works correctly.

For the second rac2 VM, I simply copy all the files in the folder rac1 in rac2 folder. Then change its display name of "rac1' to 'rac2' in the rac2 configuration file.

But rac2 in not visible in VMPlayer and cannot be turned on.

To make rac2 in VMPlayer, we add rac2 in VMPlayer inventory. But I don't understand how to do it.

Can any folk tell me how to add the new VM rac2 VMPlayer stock, so that it can be powered on?

In the 'File' menu click 'Open Virtual Machine... "and select the .vmx file in the folder of the virtual machine.

These disks were bought from Dell? If this isn't the case, then it's maybe just a warning that you use not certified Dell readers. This can be safely ignored, but not off.

You must now close comments to add an additional drive.

  • How to add a new virtual machine to the ESX host using the existing files?

I need to implement a function clone without the use of cloneVM_task. I copied (a special copy) a set existing VM Directory Active Directory to a new directory and renamed copied all files prefix name of the new direcotry.  What task VM (reconfigVM_task, createVM_task or registerVM_task) command can I use to add that the new copied VM on the ESX host? I need to manually update the .vmx for new UUID file and other parameters?

    Thanks for any help.

I think that as long as you have updated all the names to reflect the new clone you must be fine and on the first step, you will be prompted with a question.

  • Add, replace new magnetic disks to dl580 g5 hp

    Hello

I implement vsan in my environment consisting of dl580 g5 servers 4 HP. Each server has 4 * 146 GB magnetic hard drives and SSD 1. It is being tested and would be presented and produced in 1 month and Finally it should be delivered with hard drives of 1 TB instead of those small hard disks. Now I have 1 problem and 1 question:

    problem:

For the presentation magnetic disks , , I do RAID0 them at the start of the servers and because they cannot be added to the server automatically, I have to reset each server for identify. Is there a way to present them without reset servers?

    question:

My hard drives are 146 GB and we will increase them up to 1 TB, I want to know what would happen data after their replacement?

(I put VSAN fault 1 tolerated, "no scratch" and 'no cache reserved' and ' available thin mode ").

Thanks for any answers in advance.

If I understand correctly, you are in the test phase with smaller magnetic disks.  Now that you are ready for production, you want to replace with larger magnetic disks.  You also mentioned that the disks are in RAID 0 mode and not pass through.

Because you do RAID 0 and not go through, I don't think that you will be able to replace without disconnecting a host.  But since you have 4 hosts and FTT = 1, you should be able to remove a disk from a host group; Let him data rebalance, put the host in maintenance mode, eve of the host, replacing disks, power on the computer host, re - create a disk group, let the data re - balance.  Then repeat for each host.

    I hope this helps, Zach.

  • Add a virtual disk to an existing virtual machine.

    Hello

Anyone know what would be the best way to create an action to add a new virtual disk (hard) to an existing virtual computer? I have found no existing action/workflow, and I do not know where to start.

    Thank you

    Hey Mikael,.

There is a "workflow" for this!

Library / vCenter / Virtual Machine Management / management of devices / add a disk.

This workflow, you can add a VMDK to a virtual machine.

  • Poor ESX4 + CX500 write when formatting performance second virtual disk (data volume)

    Hi all

In a bit of panic goes live on Monday with the first virtual machine. Host of ESX4 implemented, no probs... followed by all the guides... vm os installed without probs... performed tests of copy file... seemed good.

I went to add a new virtual disk and format it. The performance is comparable to the workstation cruddiest, collecting dust in the corner. I checked by the parser and this lun is blockage at 60 MB/s - of similar results in summary ESX.

    Here's the Info

    ESX4 on DL380, Qlogic QLA24xx. CX500, flare19. RAID group is 6x300gb FC 10 k disks. I have read/write cache LUNs and table, watermarks of 60/80... 500 GB LUN put VMFS-shaped...

Don't know what else to add for the info, but I have a sick feeling in my stomach now...

I was looking for the other threads, and it seems that people are just 60-80 MB r/w? I am more than one administrator to 'feel', and it seems that when I put in the form of virtual disks and run tests on sata II test whiteboxes, put in shape was nearly instant... I remember having 130 - 150 Mbps when executing simple hdtach benchmarks on physical servers to SAS.

I'm confused... Any help is greatly appreciated...

You use a quick format? The normal format is slow and very intensive I/O.

And turn off the stats on SP.
