There is an online scam targeting OSX users via a popup of Safari:

    Apple security warning *.

    Browser blocked for security reasons.

Therefore, we are performing additional security checks to verify the source of the attack and stopped all resources of your system in order to prevent any further damage to your system and information.

Please ensure that you do not restart your computer to avoid any loss of data and system. Generated by the automatic warning system. Ignoring will cause permanent damage to the system.

Do NOT call this number, it's a scam.

The popup itself exceeds the size of the screen, so that the 'Cancel' button is unclickable, but even dismissing it with other methods (like ESC) make it appear again.  You must quit Safari and restart while now Shift to prevent bad page load again.  For reference, the URL was "https://storage.googleapis.com/systemconfigirationrequiredduetomjaorissues/mac/i ndex.html" but please do not visit!

I had a friend who fell for her, and she gave these people $ 300 to "solve" the problem.  More painful, she followed the instructions of granting them access to his computer remotely.  Upon learning this, I got it to restore all of the backup system (TYMV Time Machine!) and she is trying to change all his passwords.

The money went to a China-based payment processing intermediate, and scammers sent him to DocuSign to "confirm the work has been accomplished."  I guess that these measures are taken to make it difficult to recover the funds, even if his credit card company have indicated that they would probably reverse charge.

The good news is that I've just updated to the last Safari (9.0.2), and now the popup may be rejected:

I honestly don't know if this was something has changed in Safari, or if the code was different; This time, he started to READ THE MESSAGE aloud in a loop, I so was very happy to be able to reject.

The same scam appeared on my iMac. And looking over 2500 views on this page, I suspect that many other people had the same thing happen to them. I was wondering if Apple, which has labor behind them, can do something. Hope that at least they have air in it.

  • Damage control

Helpful friendly people: we know all my internet accounts have been hacked. These people have all my data and still use it. They did happen to me! In my view, that it is a federal crime. How can I go about filing charges against these people I know, insane criminal?  I could really use some good advice.

    Thank you so much, Di.

    Hi Di,

You say "people known, criminal insane." Should I understand this comment that you personally know people who have hacked your account?

While, Yes, these people, whatever they may be, are known to exist, they are usually quite skilled to cover their tracks, well before that any law enforcement agency have time to grasp. They have a tendency to disappear just as quickly as they appear.

If you personally know who they are, you must report the incident to your local Police. If you don't know who they are, then the Police simply emits a number of crimes (in the United Kingdom, in any case) and, as of other unsolved crimes, will no doubt sweep the report under the rug.

Until there is an improvement in intelligence to computer hacking then the chances of success of the prosecution will be very thin.

All you can really do, as a form of damage control, is:

    1. If your PC has been compromised remotely, re - install Windows and change all of your passwords.

2 inform your Bank and other financial institutions that your PC has been compromised and hope they check the never future transaction that applies to your account.

    3. ensure that you don't fall for any online scams where, for example, the appellant informs you that they are from Microsoft or Windows and your PC has reported problems. Cold Microsoft not call customers. They call it only if you have a prepaid support contract with them. Windows is also a brand name, not a company so if someone called and say they are from Windows immediately be suspicious.

    4. the best advice is to be vigilant.

It is not part of the mission of forums to give specific legal advice. We are after all not lawyers. To proceed with a court action that you will really need to consult a lawyer.

Contact your credit card company to cancel all previously made charges and stop all Extras taken credit card. You can quote "inability to provide the service" as a reason and direct them to the next thread as evidence of the problem at hand:
While this being made, clean your computer of any residual software that scammers may have left on it. Backup your own data and then restore the default computer is perhaps the best avenue here. It's time to seek paid professional help if you feel that the task is above your capacity.
Contact your Bank and any other financial institution that you have saved the information to connect to your computer and get their help to get your accounts.
Change your email passwords and other login information to online like Windows Live, Facebook, profiles etc.
In short, consider everything to with security suspect and potentially compromised. Here is some further reading on the subject:

  • CS6 is free?

I have reviewed the features of after effects CS6 and CC, as long as the price of weighing and decided to buy a used version of the CS6. However, as soon as I started looking for such a used copy at a reasonable price, I started seeing a lot of certain special interests. I noticed several websites (for example "filehippo") with "free" download of the CS6. These sites have stated it was legal and that the software was actually "freeware" and therefore legal to distribute free. I ran a few of the sites by an auditor of online scam, who told me (in the case of filehippo) that the site had been around since 2004 and has been a site of freeware download. I was still not sure of the veracity of the site as well as the legality, and I therefore decided to contact Adobe here to check. If the site is actually legal, so I would like to know so I don't spend extravagant sums on buying a copy used.

    Thank you

  • Has been contacted by "Microsoft" Windows about a refund for customers of PC care online, wants to deposit money in my account to credit. Is it a scam?

Original title: URGENT IS a SCAM please ADVISE as soon as possible

I was just contacted by "Microsoft" Windows about a refund for customers of PC online care because the company was closed due to the breach of contract.

This person wants to deposit money in my account to credit.  IS IT A SCAM?   Looks like a.

The person could not give me no details as their ID verification

    Thank you

    Beth

This just happened to me today, the person said in English that they were from Microsoft Windows to D.C. and I got the 2 refunds coming, one for 49.99 and one for 300.00. When you press on for more information, that they finally gave up. They wanted me to turn on my computer, so they could process this information. I never contacted Microsoft for anything, ever. Sounds like a scam to me.

  • PC online help. Are they BONE fide or is it a scam?

A few weeks before, I had a call from a man with an Indian accent, saying that it represents a company called PC online help. He said that Microsoft had informed them (and Yes, an automatic error message had been sent, apparently to Microsoft, when I had a problem an hour or so earlier) that I had problems with the slow operation. He said that his company is in partnership with Microsoft by using technology.

I paid £99 (for one year of tech support cover) you need and their person tech remote access to my computer laptop and supposed to be cleaned! And he speeded up significantly since!  He also replaced my AVG anti-virus with free download Avira free.

I have three questions-1. Have I been scammed? 2. is he now an implication of safety, for example my online banking data has been compromised? 3. how my laptop be remotely but once again, even if I now would not allow that?

    Yes, you have been scammed.

This is a scam and that is becoming more and more common lately. But even worse, if you let them into your computer, who knows what damage they did here or what confidential information they stole.

So, I highly recommend that you do both of the following immediately:

1 do a clean reinstall of Windows.

    2. change all your passwords, especially all of banks or other financial sites.

What is strange, it's your machine run faster, and have replaced them with Avira AVG; Avira is much better than AVG.

In addition, if you paid by credit card, call your credit card company and see if they can get your money back.

  • Ranking ITunes to Netflix subscription SCAM.

I received an email indicating that I had ordered a netflix subscription, I had not so much assumed my account has been compromised, then I pressed the button 'report a problem' on the screenshots. then took me to a real website where I then got my itunes right first time (first alarm) password. Then, I followed the instructions and noticed the grammatical errors and such as a company like apple would not stand for (second alarm). I had to type in all my details which I am almost 100% sure are saved in my account third alarm). I then decided to check it out and the site is slightly different with a strange URL such as email address. I then checked online on the order number that had no response confirming to me that it was an address came scam, so I decided to report it. Since then, I changed my password apple and checked the site again, that there is no password protection, the boxes just to be filled in order to continue to the next page.
