READ-ONLY FILE INDICATOR OVERLAY

Hello

is it possible to configure Windows 7 to display a read-only indicator or an overlay on the icon of the file?

I want to distinguish all the files read-only on the other hand, whenever I open a folder.

Thanks for any help,

Enrico Migliore

Hello

Welcome to the Microsoft community.

There is no such an indicator, read only files is visible by opening it, is not any icon seprate for read only files. There might be some third party tools that can help do that, however, microsoft does not recommend.

Hope this information was useful.

  • Backup error ReadyNas DUO - «read only file system»

    Hello community,

I hope you can help me with a problem I'm having with my ReadyNAS Duo (v1) running Raidiator 4.1.14. At night, it is running a backup job that copies a file from a computer on the local network to the NAS itself. What often happens is after a reboot for a while, things work sometimes days, sometimes weeks. But then I get e-mails warning that contains journal like entries:

CP: cannot create the file ' / backup/projecten/./CAM_strip/01_v0.1.JPG': read-only file system

Usually this warning is given for each file (which means thousands) so that emails are big enough. And obviously the backup has not been made. I tried to solve this problem and sought similar questions on this forum and on the web, but nothing helped. I can't identify what is the cause.

Maybe you could help me the grace to some of the run settings, I can tinker too. I guess it has something to do with the ownership and rights to access these files and folders.

    Thank you!

    Hello Miss,

Aside from trying StephenB and JennCs suggestions, if you create a test share, can you tell us if you will experience the same behavior in read-only?

    Forward to your response.

  • Photos appear as read only files

cannot remove the read-only my vista jointsdans.

I can't remove the read-only my files (at least in the photos).  It is provided with a solid box, not a check mark and I can't remove it.  I need to edit and print photos, and I don't know what to do.  The only software I have installed is a HP printer wireless on my home network.

    Hi HeatherSt,

-Have you noticed this change after you install HP printer software?
-Were you able to edit photos without any problems before?
Is there another account administrator user on your computer?

Note: It is possible that change a read-only file can cause a program that relies on the file to stop working properly, so be sure that it's okay to change a read-only file before you proceed.

Cannot change files read-only, but they can be copied, moved, renamed, or deleted. Therefore, try to Rename the file or perform one of these operations and check if that helps.

I'm updating some drivers help Driver Whiz from HP.  The new drivers download but will not be installed.  Apparently, I need to remove the read-only file attributes, but no matter what I do it continues to change the next time I have access to the file to read-only.  Any ideas?

You can read the following article and check if it helps:

  • I can't change the read only files on my NAS unit.

I have a promise SmartStore MS4300n Network Attached Storage system that I have used for more than two years. I can access it from my Windows Xp and my 64 bit Windows 7 computer. Yesterday, I tried to move some files from my Win 7 to the NAS and I find that I can't copy on it. I can move my Win 7 7 NAS files. When I look at the properties of the files on the NAS, they all are now READ ONLY. When I try to change it tells me I don't have permission. I am the only user and I am logged in as admin. Yet once it has started here yesterday.
If I access the NAS since my XP I can copy data to the NAS even if properties files are READ only.

The problem is clearly with WINDOWS 7, how to fix it, it work well before and I need to use this device to check my belongings.

    Thank you
    Dennis

OK, looks like I fixed it. I found that even though I have my computer set up to run all updates automatically I checked windows update and found five that had not been installed. After that I ran the update now can I copy files to my SIN again.

  • Load STL geometry cannot load read only file

I use the geometry VI STL load to load a 3D model that I use in a scene.  A constant path pointing to the file is connected to the entrance of the template of the VI.  If the file is read-only, the VI does not load, but opens a file dialog box instead.  If the file is not read only, everything seems to work properly.  This is expected behavior?  I don't think not that just load the file must depend on whether or not it is read-only.  Is it possible to use a single reading file in this situation?

    Hi cbfsystems,

You are right that this is not the expected behavior of this particular vi.  It is a known problem that is aware of our R & D department.  For your reference, the number associated with this question is #281409.

We are sorry if there is any inconvenience for you.

  • Turning point for read only files

Folders with subfolders and those without, keep going 'read only' even if with a click right/properties I continues to turn off the read-only.  Why is this?

    By its design.

The box greyed out for a folder means basically nothing, no change, waiting to be used. This is because read-only in the properties of the folder is only used to apply or remove the setting of all the files in the folder read-only at the same time. If you clear the check box and click on apply, then the files in the folder will be deleted from all they have read-only attributes. Like wise, to check the box to apply the attribute to all files.  The place appears again the next time because, once more, you have not used.

  • Eliminate the 'read only' files on DVD. Went to properties and clicked off the coast on the 'read only' box, but it does not work.

Put some files on DVD and then tried to change them.   Receipt message they are 'read only' tried to click on 'read only' in the properties, but this does not work.  The 'read only' is back.  How can we change the files on a DVD?

In general, once you write multi-utilisations, you can not edit the file.  If you use a rewritable media, you can delete the file and write again.

DVD writing (burning) is not present natively by XP.  What application you are using, including version?  Support for packet writing?

Prior to the observation of your message, I went into Nero and managed to delete all the files read-only.

I then tried to copy the word from the C drive files but I received a message stating that the drive is not formatted.     I then formatted the disc according to the prompt and I was able to copy the disk and then was able to clear without problem.

  • Cannot change the properties of 'read only' files in xp

Recently, I was not able to change the properties of 'read only' to my files. I click on 'Properties', uncheck the 'read only', press on apply, click OK. When I re - check the records they come up to 'read only' again. I can't find a way around it. It has stopped me to back up files, since I get the message that the files are 'read only' and cannot be changed.
    All solutions?
    Thank you

The read-only attribute has never been applicable to files under XP. You can try to take ownership of files/folders instead.

  • Cannot get rid of the read-only file attribute

I have a folder on my PC which is marked read-only.  The Setup program seems set up like that.  If I right click on the folder and go to 'Properties' there is a grey checkmark on "read only".  If I have it uncheck the box, and then click OK or apply then OK, it remains unalterable (the grey tick comes).  There is no hidden file in the folder.

    How can I fix it?

Contrary to all logic of common sense, the 'Read only' attribute, as shown in the Properties screen has absolutely nothing to do with 'Read only' when it refers to a folder in Windows XP. In fact, it indicates that it is a custom folder.  A full explanation can be found here:

"You can not view or change the read-only or the attributes of system files in Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7"

You don't mention exactly what your "problem" is with this folder, so I can not develop too much more than that.

  • Cannot cancel the read-only file attribute.

I click to clear the read-only and then hit apply to apply it to the folder and all subfolders, and looks like he took command. I closed the window and then reopen it and the read-only attribute is again highlighted. I am the administrator of the computer and I tried to move the folder to another location.

Read/write attributes are not applicable to files in Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7. That's why you can't change the way you do. If you try to take possession of the file, this is how:

  • Why do I get a 'read only File' it means of a new document?

When you save a file in Word 2007, which I just created, I get a box that says he is 'read only', even if the file is NOT read only and just created. This seems to happen randomly, and not with all the files, but on frequent basis. I don't know why this is happening or how to fix.

    Hello Davehen,

Welcome to the Microsoft Answers Community!

This sounds like the behavior of the trial version of Office 2007. Have you installed the full version on the trial version?

If yes try to uninstall then reinstall Office 2007 to see if that solves the problem for you.

If still no luck, try to reach out to the newsgroup issues General Word for assistance.
