Cannot cancel the read-only file attribute.

I click to clear the read-only and then hit apply to apply it to the folder and all subfolders, and looks like he took command. I closed the window and then reopen it and the read-only attribute is again highlighted. I am the administrator of the computer and I tried to move the folder to another location.

Read/write attributes are not applicable to files in Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7. That's why you can't change the way you do. If you try to take possession of the file, this is how:

  • Cannot get rid of the read-only file attribute

I have a folder on my PC which is marked read-only.  The Setup program seems set up like that.  If I right click on the folder and go to 'Properties' there is a grey checkmark on "read only".  If I have it uncheck the box, and then click OK or apply then OK, it remains unalterable (the grey tick comes).  There is no hidden file in the folder.

    How can I fix it?

Contrary to all logic of common sense, the 'Read only' attribute, as shown in the Properties screen has absolutely nothing to do with 'Read only' when it refers to a folder in Windows XP. In fact, it indicates that it is a custom folder.  A full explanation can be found here:

  • Cannot modify READ ONLY file attributes using the administrator account

I tried the windows Explorer and a custom program called Directory Opus. I tried to create several administrator accounts, but not luck.

I can't work with this existing problem.

    I need a solution.

I have exactly the same problem.  Following the steps above did not work, folders/subfolders unchangeable rest.  I am the owner of the folder and subfolders.  I don't know yet how they became Read-Only to start.  Read-only on the individual files setting works correctly.  Changing the settings of file does not work.

    IMPORTANT EDIT:

According to a message from the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
You cannot view or change the read-only or system attributes
To summarize, Windows does not include system or read-only folders settings (he was aware of these properties on the FILES however).  Individual applications that you use cannot ignore the State of read-only on a folder and can give an error.  In my situation, an application was trying to create a new file in a folder that has been marked read-only and honored the RO parameter and refuses to try to create the new file.

To actually change these attributes, properties menu will not work.  The KB source:

    • If you click apply changes to this folder only , the read-only attribute is changed for all files in the folder. However, the read-only attribute is not changed for the folder, its subfolders or files in its subfolders. If you click apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files , the read-only attribute is changed for all files in the folder and all files in the subfolders. However, the read-only attribute is not changed for the folder or its subfolders.

To change these properties, the user must start a Terminal command line and execute the changes by hand, for example, this command:

    • attrib - r + s c:\test

.. What will remove the READ ONLY parameter and apply the SYSTEM setting in the folder.  Once more, change the properties of files (including files in subfolders) works as expected with the right click - Properties-> Security menu.

  • I can't change the read only files on my NAS unit.

I have a promise SmartStore MS4300n Network Attached Storage system that I have used for more than two years. I can access it from my Windows Xp and my 64 bit Windows 7 computer. Yesterday, I tried to move some files from my Win 7 to the NAS and I find that I can't copy on it. I can move my Win 7 7 NAS files. When I look at the properties of the files on the NAS, they all are now READ ONLY. When I try to change it tells me I don't have permission. I am the only user and I am logged in as admin. Yet once it has started here yesterday.
If I access the NAS since my XP I can copy data to the NAS even if properties files are READ only.

  • Photos appear as read only files

cannot remove the read-only my vista jointsdans.

I can't remove the read-only my files (at least in the photos).  It is provided with a solid box, not a check mark and I can't remove it.  I need to edit and print photos, and I don't know what to do.  The only software I have installed is a HP printer wireless on my home network.

    Hi HeatherSt,

-Have you noticed this change after you install HP printer software?
-Were you able to edit photos without any problems before?
Is there another account administrator user on your computer?

Note: It is possible that change a read-only file can cause a program that relies on the file to stop working properly, so be sure that it's okay to change a read-only file before you proceed.

Cannot change files read-only, but they can be copied, moved, renamed, or deleted. Therefore, try to Rename the file or perform one of these operations and check if that helps.

If you can't always change read-only, follow the steps in the link below:
  • Cannot change the reading file attributes only in Windows XP

When I view the folder properties, they all show the 'read only' as selected.  The selection is a greyed out tick.  When I uncheck this, change seems to be accepted but is not change.  View the properties immediately after that do change the same greyed tick is still there.  All other problems with it seem when a transfer of the user it XP files to a new Vista system.  This isn't the case here, because the files are all over my existing XP system.  How can I continuous change the folder attributes to have the 'read only' deselected.

The read-only attribute has never been applicable to files under XP. You can try to take ownership of files/folders instead.

  • Cannot turn off read-only attribute. Only perform the media folders.

Yesterday, I noticed that all my files storage of media, that is to say, photos and music, hear the read-only attribute.  When I try to stop, it acts like it is trigger attribute, but it doesn't.  There is a lock on these folders icon.  I have administrative permissions.  It is not limited to a single physical disk.  It affects the files on two different disks.

  • I can't uncheck the 'Read only' attribute with success a Program Files (x 86) folder. Help, please?

Hello. I have mod Grand Theft Auto IV for pc. Long story short, I have the re - install. There is this called LCPDFR mod that allows you to become a police officer in the game. I need to download this. In order to successfully download this (when I try to download / save, he said "the Publisher of this program could not be verified". it gives me no option to run or something and that's it, apparently because of the problem I put in the title and Description), the root folder "Grand Theft Auto IV" (which is in my "Program Files (x 86)" folder) is not to be 'Read Only' (the 'Read only' checkbox must be deselected in 'Properties'). Do not forget that, under the tab 'security' in 'Properties', for the folder root of "Grand Theft Auto IV", I have administrators / me 'total control '. So, as I said, I uncheck the 'Read only', click on 'Apply', then 'Ok '. I go back in 'Properties' and 'Read Only' is checked as if I had never disabled it in the first place (when I already just did).

So, in summary, the problem I have is that every time I uncheck "Read only", click on apply, then click ok, and go to properties again, it is always checked when I was already unchecked, applied and then approved it. This continues to be over and over and over again. Please help me?

    PS - I have windows 8.

I thank you very much for your time and have a nice day!

Hello. For some reason I'm not able properly to uncheck the 'Read only' attribute of a folder in my "Program Files (x 86)". Whenever I click to uncheck the 'Read only' in 'Properties' (tried several times) and click 'Apply', then 'Ok' and I go back to check it out, it is checked as if I've never disabled it. I have Windows 8. He continues to do this and I don't know why. Help, please?

I would like to start by finding which file is read-only again. This is probably a file as well as a miniature file desktop.ini.  An easy way to find it is to go to the details view, turn on the column heading "Attributes" and search for all files with the attribute value "R":
