Recovering a vmfs on a raid5 recovered,

Help

I have an ESXi 5.5, which has been upgraded.

The VMFS consisting of multiple extends. in the whole of controllers. A virtual disk lost and found, but now the ESXi does not recognize under the VMFS.

I use fdisk and redo the partition? Is there something I can do?

Jeff

Well, it was a very general answer in a different direction. Thanks for trying.

I ended up asking VMWare to support. That was fantastic support by the way.

Extends it in my vmfs lacked. Since the Bay set new record ID disk when I imported the, thought VMware they were instant. What to do since this id does not match. This must be what looks like a snapshot.

    Hey guys,.

I need help pretty bad here.

I have several data stores which are almost VMFS 5 except the one that is 3 VMFS. Today, I turned off my box to check something in the bios (no changes made), but when the system back upward, the VMFS 3 data store was unreadable.

I followed a tutorial in line and together try to fix the partition table. However, I put the GPT partition table when I think the VMFS 3 store was MBR.

    My steps:

    1 partedUtil getUsableSectors /vmfs/devices/disks/naa.50015179590f8c3f

It gave me a message along the line of any partition or an invalid partition. Do not remember.

    2 partedUtil setptbl /vmfs/devices/disks/naa.50015179590f8c3f TPG ' 1 2048 4123456 AA31E02A400F11DB9590000C2911D1B8 0.

Then I made the foregoing according to an on-line tutorial and forgetting that my data store was VMFS3 and MBR.

    3 partedUtil getUsableSectors /vmfs/devices/disks/naa.50015179590f8c3f

This gave me a result of 312581774

    4 partedUtil setptbl /vmfs/devices/disks/naa.50015179590f8c3f TPG ' 1 2048 312581774 AA31E02A400F11DB9590000C2911D1B8 0.

Then I part 4 - following the tutorial

Clearly, this was the wrong thing to do for my drive. Can anyone help solve this?

Here is the disc. It shows the disk mounted, but ESXi is not able to find the existing volume and mount the virtual machines on it.

  • Repair / recover VMFS Volume

I have a situation where someone had vSphere 4.x older glomerulus. Virtual machines have been welcomed to a rheostat of SAN iSCSI for the nodes in the cluster.  Volume was initially 260 GB when I did a few years ago.   Later, they added enough VMs they needed to expand.  They have developed the ability of LUN to 3 TB, but has never been able to extend the partition.   It's a problem with VMFS3.

Seems if you epand the LUN, EVEN IF you NEVER develop the score, your systems, if they disassemble the volume can never stand again.

These are apparently for some time where over time systems more wouldn't have 'access' on MON... and after a power outage, no system could then access dozens of virtual machines.

Now I need to find a way to mount this 3 TB iSCSI LUN, even if read-only long enough to mount the virtual machines off of it to the NFS share 260 I ready.

Goal: map iSCSI LUNS on Windows / Linux system.  Turn up the volume of RO.  Copy NFS export data. Destroy and rebuild the data on the new lun VMFS5 iSCI.

I can mount the LUNS to the CENTOS system and parted shows the 3 TB LUN but only 260 GB primary partition.  So, I see the data as expected.   "Now, I tried to compile ' vmfs-tools - 0.2.5 ', but the compiler errors.  Nothing of any help or comments. I've tried ubuntu and CENTOS48 too and mistakes not much help.

Is their path another, simpler to get this accomplished?

    Thank you

Cut the flat.vmdks is possible but only worth trying if:

    1. you have good reasons to assume that the flat.vmdk was written in a single fragment
    2. the vmdk was thick provsioned (greedy zero works best)
    3. you can provide specific details on the structure of the disc of the lost flat.vmdk

  • Hot VMFS copy: no chance to recover?

    Hello!

    I had a trouble.

Being very limited in time, I did on the VMFS running:

    DD bs = 100M if = / dev/sdc1 of = / dev/sda8

The/dev/sdc1 and/dev/sda8 are of type fb.

After that, I had pulled out of the SDC.

The next rebootsESX is not sda8/dev/sda8 as a data store. I've spent a lot of time playing with ESX already but not could not make it work.

    1. is this really serious mistake in hot-copy a VMFS running?

    2. are there ways to fsck the VMFS?

    3. sda8 is a little bigger then the original, is it wrong?

    Thanks for the tips!

My guess is that sda8 is presented on a different LUN address. In this case you will the VMFS to access again.

  • Help recovering files flat.vmdk supplied thickness necessary!

    Hi all

First of all, some background on my current configuration (and I'll try to keep it short and sweet)...

I have 3 1 than to hard disks in a 5.x ESXi host I use in a RAID5 array.  The RAID is actually implemented and managed by a guest Windows Server 2008R2 VM on the host.  When I created data warehouses to build the table, I've formatted each of hard drives and added inside the vSphere Client as VMFS data stores.  When I added the readers to the configuration of the VM of comments, I put them to be supplied thick lazy-reset and all 3 have the same size (930.2899996 GB).  Each disc has an and a single VMDK and this VMDK takes up most of the usable usable VMFS partition sectors.  Inside of the guest, the virtual disks were formatted using Windows Disk Manager like dynamic GPT disks without starting and then adjust upward in a RAID5 array.

    What has happened...

A week or if there is during a backup/cleaning of the virtual machine, I accidentally deleted a 2nd guest VM which has also consulted with data warehouses (I was testing Windows Server 2012R2, impressed) without separate configuration of the 2nd VM first, data warehouses and eventually remove the VMDK files from the disk.  I am recovering files flat.vmdk at least 2 of these discs.  As this happened, I spent many hours of research online about VMDK recovery and disk running scans trying to find the missing VMDK (again unsuccessfully). Nothing has been written to one of these discs, and the VMFS partition is still in-tact.

    I know...

Geometry of the disk, the file names, logical sector size and number of sectors files missing VMDK (recovered in the log file of the last successful start-up of the VM)

Using the above information, I have a model created for a descriptor ready replacement VMDK file as soon as I can retrieve images flat.vmdk

    What I've tried so far...

ESXi Shell & vmfs-fuse-> Navigation data storages show volumes are empty.  VMFS-fuse mounts the volume, but no VMDK file cannot be found.

UFS Explorer-> same basic idea.  VMFS partitions are found easily and show good healthcare, but I can't find the files there, either.

Hexagonal view using of UFS Explorer, I autorévisés several areas that I know are within the area of data and verified the parity RAID5 withdraws (to be confirmed), it seems that the data is always there and in-tact.

DiskInternals VMFS Recovery-> attempt to analyze the disk, after 36 hours of scanning on a single disc had not yet reached 10%.

    What I would like to...

Find the starting location for the file flat.vmdk for each disc and do an image binary dump of this position to the end of the VMDK file (sector of end computed by the starting location + number of sectors for the VMDK's newspaper).  Since all 3 discs are identical in the sense of VMWare, this place of departure should be the same for all 3 disks.  I have an external HD to 3 TB in waiting for the dump once I know not where to start.

Worth I feel is actually locate the start position in hexadecimal view (I do not know what hexadecimal values, I need to look for).  Sanbarrow (continuum) of the site (VMDK-basics), he said he's looking for the mbr as header of the file, but I've not found in my records.

Last note 1: this isn't a company or business system.  This is my personal home server and I have legitimate licenses for all the OS running on the host computer.

Grade 2: Yes, I * have a backup, but it is around the age of 2 months and lack about 300 GB of files that have been added since the last backup.  Can I recover a good part of the missing data (about 60 GB) back to the source and copying/download files, but there are still about 240 GB that I can't copy (source no longer exists).  My fault for not having more recent backups, but worse is still not a TOTAL loss (about 85 percent recovered from backup & original sources).  All disks in the guest system VMDK is stored on a separate DSS and have experienced good backups of the primary system on a separate disk drives).

Any assistance with this would be much appreciated!

    Thank you

    Brian

    Ok...

So, after several weeks and countless hours my best, I finally decided to give up and call it closes unexpectedly.  Finally, I reformatted the hard drive and rebuilt the RAID from scratch - it is just the initial synchronization now and I will fully bring my last backup to the table at this stage ends.  The most important things I have known and confirmed backups of already, but I'll never recover the archival footage that I had done previous laptops, but at least it's not a TOTAL loss.  I've not spent by them in a long time, so I doubt that something very important, but there are still some bugs the stew out of me.

What bothers me more, however, is the lack of response at all here.  I read on previous posts on the subject, describes the situation in detail as well as what I need help with, and after 3 weeks and 60 views... nothing.  I thought that VMware would have an active, reactive and useful community much more than that and I must say that I am very disappointed.  I hope that all those who might find themselves in this situation is able to get the help they need.

    I hope everyone has a great 2014!

Why these VMDK files have relationship with each other? (Delete a VM, an another VM doesn't work)

How can I solve this problem?

How can I recover this VMDK file?

    Please guide step by step.

    Kind regards

Looks like you have several virtual hard drives of many virtual machines attached to your VM Veeam.  I suggest to delete, make sure that you do NOT select the option remove drive when you delete them.

  • How to recover from the failure of a with ESXi USB flash drive?

I have ESXi 5.5 running on a 16 GB USB flash drive.  The system itself has a RAID card and drives mirrored where all virtual machines are stored, so it seems to me that a critical point of weakness is the drive itself.  If die ESXi itself running flash player, is there a procedure to recover the virtual machines on the disks?  Or should I keep a backup of my drive as well?

    1. How to restore the operating system assuming that the flash drive fails? If I reinstalled ESXi on a new drive of the same thumb, would see the VMware VMs existing on the hard drives of the server? Or is the process of discovery of the relatively painless existing virtual machines?

If your flash drive goes down, will not be a problem that you have your virtual machines without danger on the separate data store in the locally attached storage drives. all you got to do is to reinstall ESXi host, he will be happy to see the existing VMFS data store and browse this data store where are stored the re-save you and virtual machines in the inventory.

See also changes following KB to make the backup of your ESXi as operating system configuration and when you change the configuration at the time of the failure of ESXi, you don't have to worry about re-configuarting it

VMware KB: Backup and restore configuration using the vSphere command-line Interface and vSphere PowerCLI ESXi

    1. How can I maintain redundancy for my USB failure? Can I have two drives connected and automatically backup flash / mirror the first hard drive to the second?

This is not possible (I never tried myself) If you use an external flash drive, but let's say that you have any material to the specific provider giving this feature as

    DELL IDSDM http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/pedge/en/poweredge-idsdm-whitepaper-en.pdf

or another supplier giving a similar feature, then it is quite possible to mirror. Otherwise, the best option is take config. backup using KB, I mentioned in the first answer.

    Hola,

If estan in discos separately, you puedes poner el disco las MVs in otro servidor ESXi y montarlo sin problemas, durante el proceso is you have the option of montarlo in su estado actual, o formatearlo.

In any case lo montes in a Server Windows, are only operating system the cabecera one cambiara el the VMFS n y sera dificil recover el disco después of eso.

  • Need help to recover data from delta vmdk

    Hello

    I have a big problem.

He had a guest Ubuntu 8.04 Server installed on VMWare ESXi 4.1

It is a virtual machine size 200 GB.

Since then, it was running on 99% complete, I tried to increase the size to help

    vmkfstools x 210 G /vmfs/datastore1/LinuxServer/LinuxServer.vmdk

But then he started giving the error

"Failed to open (The parent virtual disk has been modified since the child was created)."

We had the hell of the data on the virtual machine, and the admin had not saved any of them.

And on top of these, the guy who created the virtual machine installed Ubuntu over LVM. ()

Then I noticed that in the settings of the virtual machine, the HARD drive was made to a vmdk to delta as LinuxServer-000001 - delta.vmdk (81 GB)

but the main file seems to be LinuxServer - flat.vmdk(210GB).

To try to start the computer again, I messed all CIDs, now I don't know who is what.

On one last try, I tried to create an another VM pointed flat vmdk.

Which seems to start properly, but many files have disappeared.

Is there a a way to recover the data by using the vmdk delta?

    Please help someone.

    Hi Vishnu,

I already mentioned in the post where I gave you the files: "what I did is that I reduced the size of the disk original back to 200 GB.

Basic disk size was brought to 210 GB, but it was originally of 200 GB. However the Flash disk was always set to 200 GB, so I reduced the size of the Original Base i.e. the flat.vmdk disk using the pointer file hard.

    Concerning

  • update failed to partition table - how to recover killed 3.5u5

I'm having a serious problem right now

A friend of mine tried an update of 3.5u2 3.5u5.

The update failed for some reason any.

Now when you boot the ESX there is no longer the VMFS volume, which stood on the same disk as the ESX itself.

I checked with a Knoppix and fdisk and the old VMFS volume appears as unallocated.

Any ideas on how to recover from that?

I tried testdisk but he did not find the correct table.

Of course, no backup or dd-dump headers VMFS is available.

All ideas are welcome - my friend think he'll get fired tomorrow, so it's really urgent

    Thanks Ulli

My Mac pro does not work. Is it possible to back up my data through safe mode? Problem is that I accidentally deleted my last backup in my external hard drive. I'm just trying to retrieve photos and videos.

Perhaps. What happens when you start up the Mac normally?

    You have another Mac?

This Mac starts to recover? (need of Lion or later)?
