recovering files to the new computer

I transferred all my files + settings for a new portable hard drive (WD My Passport) from my old computer to Windows XP by using the "file transfer + Assistant settings". I try now to put them on my new 64-bit computer to Windows 7 using "Easy Transfer". They moved like a load of data files in a folder: ' USMT2. UNC'. I can't find any way to open these files! My computer tried to open them with Word Pad, but they read just like gibberish (ie the characters of nonsense). What can I do now? They contain the full backup of my old computer! Thank you, starsister

It seems that you may have used the old transfer utility

  • NEED to recover files from the xp computer that does not start.

I changed startup on an old xp computer programs and now it does not start (I can accidentally put driver not run at startup). blue screen; STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF8992528, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) xp sp3 no safe mode without recovery does Center no disc. I just bought a computer to try to recover the information with win 7 but can not slave the drive to him because it is ide and the new computer is too modern. I need to save files are important on the xp computer is it possible to save them?

I met this BSOD error several times, and the following fix usually (not always) allows the hard disk to be read by the system...

-Boot your system and access the BIOS Setup
-It will vary with different systems, but try to press "F2", "F10" or "delete".
-If you need help with this step, let me know the model of the system, and I'll see what I can come up with
-In the configuration of the BIOS, looking something like "Device Boot Configuration"
-Go to the hard disk configuration and change the current option
-Here are the most common options that I can think of:
-SATA IDE, AHCI, (newer systems have more options, such as IRRT)
-If the current option is "SATA", change it to "AHCI" or "IDE".
-If the current option is 'DCIS', change it to "IDE", etc...

It's just a quick run through a possible fix, without knowing the details of your system!  If you need more detailed help, I would like to know the details of the system, and we'll see what we can do!

  • Windows easy transfer. I can't use transfer to move files to the new computer

I used windows easy transfer to back up my files to an external hard drive before doing a clean install of windows 7, XP.

I am unable to find any "windows easy transfer" files on the hard drive for transfer to the new computer.

ALL the files from my old computer are there and I am able to access it from the external hard drive.

Please tell me there is an easy way to transfer files and I don't have to do it manually.

What is the error message when you try to restore files in Windows 7?

Also, did you really use the Windows Easy Transfer Wizard to back up your files or did you use the built in the files and Settings Transfer wizard in Windows XP? If you used the files and Settings Transfer Wizard, that won't work no.

You must install Windows Easy Transfer on Windows XP, save the files as one. MIG file on your external drive, restore it on the Windows 7 computer. See for instructions:

I do not know what I'm dong wrong as I am not very computor spirit, so that the answers would be useful in silly English thank you. Sorry to be so long-winded.

    Hello @shedeval

I understand that you have copied your files on an external drive from your old computer.

You tried to copy the files to the new computer, but when you disconnect the external hard drive the files are no longer accessible.

I think that you have created or copied a shortcut to the new computer and not the actual files.  When you're logged out outside the new computer had more disk access to open files.

I would like to redo the copy and when you finished externally, log out and then try again.

    Good luck!

  • My computer crashed, but I managed to save my files. How can I transfer my bookmarks from the old Firefox browser and install it on the new computer? I can't find the bookmark file in the old browser.

I'm transferring my files to an HP laptop to a Dell because the crushed HP desktop computer. I installed Firefox 8 in the Dell computer (I got the Firefox 5 - I believe - in the HP). I'm looking for the old bookmarks file in the old computer, but I can't find them. Where are they? I'll appreciate your help because I had a very good collection of bookmarks. Unfortunately I didn't save them from time to time.

Well, you were able to recover your files. I don't know where you have saved your files, but you can use the search function and search your favorites using this search term "bookmark *.» *«. It should be very probably a JSON extension file.

Once you find the file, use this link to help restore backups.

    I hope this helps.

  • Computer crashed recently, used the version 3.6.15, now with 4.0, how do I bookmarks from the previous version that was on the old computer. All files of this computer on the new computer under HD1?

Computer crashed recently, used the version 3.6.15, now with 4.0, how do I bookmarks from the previous version that was on the old computer. All files of this computer on the new computer under HD1?

bookmarks.html contains no bookmarks, this file is no longer used to store.

Are you sure you're looking in the right folder, you are possible to search in the installation of Firefox rather than the profile folder folder. The following link provides details on the location of the profile folder - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox

If you do not find places.sqlite you may not have access to your old profile folder.

  • Copied bookmarks to the file in the profile on the new computer, but they do not appear.

Bookmarks.html copied the folder from the old computer in XP and deposited the record .default in the profile on the new computer under Win7 folder. The bookmarks do not appear in Firefox, even after restart of Firefox and restart the computer.

Since Firefox 3 favorites are stored in places.sqlite, you must copy this file instead.

  • Cleanup of old files of e-mail after the importation of the accounts in the new computer.

I have a new MacPro with El Capitan.  In the implementation of the new computer, I installed my email accounts, one in particular (a gmail account) had 7 GB of files.  I went into the settings Gmail and disabled Protocol IMAP AllMail, Archive, and several others that I didn't need on the Mac Mail.  It seems that there is a residue of all these emails stored on computer and I would like to remove them because they consume a lot of space on the hard disk.    Y at - it a particular cache that can be cleaned?  A special way to remove hidden files?

You must remove the Gmail account in Mail in Preferences > accounts. This will bring you to system preferences > Internet accounts. Uncheck the Gmail box in system preferences.

It seems to remove all the data, but it's actually still in the Mail. Go to the library (see below) Mail to the user folder. In v3, you will see several folders named like that.

    C7AA1753-CDA7-4C5D-9505-05B73B565A50 /.

    C9A984AA-A145-4988-8279-B93445951DAB /.

    MailData

Check in the files with the alphanumeric naming. You should be able to identify what your Gmail account. If you have only one account other file would be for messages "on my Mac" premises. Delete the folder with your Gmail data.

Then in email given, delete files that the envelope in the name.

Sign out under the Apple in the menu bar.

    Connect and empty the trash.

In system preferences > Internet accounts, check the Mail to your Gmail account. When you open Mail it will reindex messages that have not been deleted, then your Gmail messages will download from the server according to the ones you marked for synchronization.

Note: You may find that the Mail does not well with the unsynchronized all mail folder.

Library of the user to see the

The user library folder is hidden by default. In the unhide: select the Finder in the Dock. Less go in the Menu bar > hold down the Option key and you will see the library.
