RedHat Enterprise 5 VMware Tools

Think this is the right forum...

Question:

Have installed Redhat Enterprise 5 and vmware tools.  Since this is a server x-Window has not been installed, so it is impossible to start vmware-toolbox.

I want to assure that this guest is logged with the host.  How can I access vmware-toolbox w/o X Windows being installed?

/ Cheers

You can not.

But if you talk about time synchronization, check the invited .vmx file. "If there is a line"tool.syncTime ="TRUE" ' then time synchronization is enabled.

  • Windows Server 2008 Enterprise R2 VMware tools installation - "device installation was prevented by a strategy."

P2V'ed a Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise Server using the stand-alone converter. Converted OK, can launch the machine in 10 Workstation, log with the ID of the administrator, but no network adapter or mouse. Several web search performance of the possible solutions for this - change the local security policy to everyone, the services to disable Ctrl-M - they have not worked with me. After several uninstall, re-installation of VMware tools (manually via the keyboard navigation for the update of the operating system host by mapping shared folders), now when the machine starts I see in the system, try "device installation was prevented by a policy." Do not see anything particularly related to, with this verbiage, at the request of Windows and security logs events. In addition, the physical machine has been sent, is no longer available unfortunately, but I think that it is just config and can be corrected.

    Any help appreciated in advance.

    1. Change the strategy of Local computer, computer, Configuration models of administration, system, Device Installation Restrictions of Installation of device to ' not configured.'
    2. Delete all the USB unknown devices in Device Manager, then do a search for the hardware changes.

Both of the above have been made manually via the keyboard navigation, but analysis of changes of material made me my mouse back and let me launch the installation of VMware tools.

  • VMware Tools in guest operating system Redhat?

I installed the VMware Tools in the redhat EL4 and VMs EL5, but I was not able to get the tools to run automatically when starting systems.  Anyone know how I can configure the redhat OS to load the vmware tools adapted to the startup?

After you set up the tools, it loads as a service.  The service should automatically be set to start on the rc3.  The default installation creates a link of /etc/rc3.d/S19vmware-tools to /etc/init.d/vmware-tools script that autoruns.

    Is it not the case?

  • Need for security upgrade VMware Tools?

Hello, Im using a VMware environment that runs a good handful of Linux VM.  We're running 5.1 VMware update 3 on all hosts.

Im not a Linux guy and im going to have to start learning more about Linux, but I've noticed to allocate to the virtual machine is here who have Linux, either do not have VMware tools installed, or are obsolete.  Its mix of Red Hat Enterprise 6, SUSE Linux 11, CentOS 4/5/6/7 and Ubuntu.

My first concern is security, from a point of view security should I get these Linux VM up to date with the latest VMware tools, or else get installed on it?

A feature point of view im says that the virtual machine is working well.

    Thank you

    Mike

    Hi Defrogger,

I have a small number of Linux virtual machines in my environment and I have VMware tools installed, its always good to keep up to date.

They also provide the required drivers for the VM Client interact with the reliable ESXi host. This interface allows also ESXi host be able to check on the health of the client VM during its operation.

  • Install vmware tools causes an application actually work

Yes, you read right to the topic!

The virtual machine has been 8.1 Windows Pro and is now 8.1 Enterprise 64-bit.

In both cases, when vmware tools is installed an education program called Mad Minutes works as expected. When vmware tools is uninatalled the program fails to work correctly, and the system doesn't have to be restarted to see the effects.

Minutes of crazy looks like it is built against a kind of platform of Netscape/Mozilla.

What is happening, it's interface does not display data from database what ever is used and some elements of the interface are inactive.

In fact, the same applies to real computers. As part of troubleshooting why the progam runs on Windows 8 Edition Tablet and not 8.1 (I still have to try real win 8 on a virtual machine) I thought to create a virtual machine if I could quickly change OS.

Virtual machines have no updates that are applied to them, but the updates has not made a difference.

As far as VMtools goes, I uninstalled the individual components and the software has continued to run. To remove the items from the installation of tools I launch Installer and choose Edit and then select the option do not use. If the change required a reboot, then I would do so, the applicaton would always run.

I even had as much as having all the options to not use the value. And I mean each element even tools itself, Mad Minutes still worked. Is I go into Add/Remove programs to uninstall VMtools, the program stopped working as expected.

When I contacted the people at Mad Minute they said that it was a problem that makes it also randomly on Windows 7.

As you can see it's quite a puzzle indeed, so I'm tender hand to see if the community might be able to understand this.

    Hello

Y at - it a general Vmware tools for all Linux: I mean Redhat suse and Ubuntu are the same?

    Where can I download it

    Thank you

You can install it via the tools provided with your ESXi installation. Right-click the virtual machine in the inventory and select comments-> installation / upgrade VMware Tools.

This will mount a CD player in the guest operating system, providing VMware tools. The steps to install on CentOS (i.e. RHEL base):

    root@srv20 [/ TMP] # cd/tmp

    root@srv20 [/ TMP] # mkdir/mnt/cdrom

    root@srv20 [/ TMP] # mount/dev/cdrom/mnt/cdrom

Mount: block device/dev/sr0 is protected write, read-only installation

    root@srv20 [/ TMP] # cp /mnt/cdrom/VMwareTools-*.tar.gz/tmp

    root@srv20 [/ TMP] # umount-l/mnt/cdrom

    root@srv20 [/ TMP] # tar xfz VMwareTools-version 9.0.0 - 782409.tar.gz

    root@srv20 [/ TMP] # cd vmware-tools-distrib.

Debian may differ a little in the names, but you get the idea.

Anyone have any suggestions for the installation of VMWare tools in Server 2008 Enterprise (Core)?

Looks like the same question as http://communities.vmware.com/thread/429432

It seems that Windows 2008 Core is not explorer.exe, and it is part of the tools dealing with the integration of the unit which does not handle this correctly.

Try to delete the following file tool to disable the functionality of the unit, and restart Windows:

    C:\Program VMware Tools\plugins\vmusr\unity.dll

The rest of the functionality of tools such as changing resolution and copy + paste should continue to work even without the Unity plugin.

  • Application VM that requires no VMware Tools?

    Hey all -

I'm looking for a way to query VC find some info on my virtual machine. Some of these virtual machines do not have VMware Tools of loading (virtual appliances and whatnot), so guestinfo.pl is not always going to be a good way to find info on them.

Basically what I want to know is the name of the customer, guest OS (guestFullName), guestState, hostname, IP addresses, addresses MAC and networks that the guest is on. Is it possible to get this info from the host or VirtualCenter rather than having to get it through the virtual machine tools?

If anyone can point me to a script that does this, or maybe some quick and dirty (and easy to understand - my perl is not terrible) sample code, that would be great.

These scripts are provided as samples, they are in no way limited to only these two scripts. The main differences between the script guestinfo.pl and vminfo.pl is that one is able to get more details on the guestOS relying on the fact that VMware Tools is installed, you can then get a lot of information that I mentioned earlier on the IP address for each individual interface, the host name of the system, disk information, etc. The script of the latter will provide level virtual machine information that will always be available. One can easily write a script that collects all the details you mentioned earlier and more.

Regarding your comment on the interrogation of a virtual machine, I'm not sure I follow your statement. All this information is part of a VirtualMachine object, according to what interests you, you will retrieve specific properties/attributes. The configurations of virtual machine (for example, the name of the virtual machine), the number of CPUS, etc. and info level comments are two properties of a VirtualMachine. Connect to a server vCenter Server and extract all virtual machines and then retrieve the properties that you're interested, so you'll need to query each VM.

I have attached a quick example script that collects some of the basic information about a virtual machine, if she happens to have VMware Tools installed, it will also collect this information, otherwise it will just collect the basic properties. It is written using the vSphere SDK for Perl, which is the same SDK that is used in guestinfo.pl and vminfo.pl, I also added a few comments that should hopefully help you to understand and I would recommend that you take a look at the documentation for more details.

Here is an example of output, you just nee to specify either vCenter Server or you may connect directly to a host ESX (i):

  • Status in ESX5i and VCenter VMware tools is false

So I don't know what is the right forum for this because I can't isolate the problem.  I have a lab environment running ESX 5i Enterprise.  On my virtual machines of Windows 7 (all), I get a very strange behavior regarding VMware tools.  I do not see this on Windows XP, Server 2008 or Server 2003)

If you look at a tab summary of the virtual machine, or the inventory in vCenter or ESX host, it will signal tools VMware is common, but is not running.   If you click on the console tab, click on in the console and then switch to the contents tab, it will then show the IP address and the VMware tools running service.  At this point, it's all or nothing if IP address never appears in the display of the master-inventory.  If you wait a while, going to happen reported VMware tools does not yet.   When he thinks it VMware tools does not work, these function requiring the tools are not available.  It is a real drag...

It is becoming a real problem.  Anyone has any suggestions as to what might happen?

What do you mean VM does not work?

It does not start, the operating system does not work, cannot remove the snapshot... what part does not work?

You can delete VM from the inventory.  Create a NEW virtual machine, punch the config of the hard disk of the computer virtual EXISTING and create a new configuration. Then migrate to move the vmx / vmdk in the same folder, delete the complete original when configuration file.

You can be here all day trying to solve a vmx file, and it still doesn't work.  Best thing to do is start over with a new configuration.
