  After being absent from ESXi and this forum for a while (just using WS and Fusion ;-)) I come to ESXi now.)

  Earlier I run ESXi 5.1, then lather 5.5 and managed by the vSphere Client (on Windows). Then rumors came vSphere client will not be sued.

  And unfortunately, it doesn't support all the levels of hw. Remember to level 8. But in general the vSphere client worked for my needs.

  Now 6 ESXi is out and it is once again what GUI to use for administration. Know, I don't want to run large vmware closed with a couple of ESXi servers.

  Only, I need exactly an ESXi server and want to manage through a graphical interface. I read about a new vSphere Client 6. But it supports all levels of hw, i.e.--11?

  And what's on the customer web vSphere 6? I read, that I would need vcenter to run it. But I just got and they need a single ESXi server. Are there benefits by using the web client just to manage a single ESXi machine?

  In a few words: what GUI would you recommend for my needs?

  As now your options for managing ESXi 6.0 guests are limited to the vSphere Client (with the limitations you mentioned), connection of VMware Workstation, or the Client host integrated ESXi which however is not officially supported, and has also some limits with the free hypervisor (see description) edition.

  Although not all features new Compatibility Modes (aka physical Versions) are supported by the vSphere Client, you can still handle most of the parameters of the virtual machine.

• Problems of time (NTP) on the virtual machines within ESXi 4

  I had synchronization problems of intermittent time with my computers running on ESXi4 for quite a while now.  I thought that there were problems with my VM themselves and made some changes that appear to clear things for awhile.  The problems are back, and I'm starting to wonder if this is something being induced with ESXi itself.  My configuration is:

  ESXi 4.1.0

  -2 x Windows domain controller

  -Exchange Server x 2

  -FreeNAS

  VMWare tools are installed on all windows boxes.  FreeNAS is running without installed VMTools.  Domain controllers are set to use time NTP, servo out of an internet time server.  Client Windows have the default configuration and should be pulling the exact time of one of the two domain controllers.  FreeNAS is taking time to DCs.  Often when problems begin with authentication, it is because of the difference in clock being too great between servers, or between the Server / client.

  Are there recommended solutions for these issues?  I dug through the forum messages and the KBs and found a good bit of info but nothing that does not seem to solve these problems.

  I recommend you to configure a time outside of your virtual environment for you server ESXi hosts.

  Imagine that nothing is under tension, and you begin to start.

  Your domain controller will begin with your host ESXi (UTC) time until it can connect to the Internet to update time.

  At this time most VMs are probably on the wrong time, and it creates a lot of problems.

  After the updating of the DC then only will be hosting ESXi synch at the exact time. Quite a turn messed up

  If your ESXi have an external NTP server, they boot with the exact time and start all the virtual machines with the exact time.

  I am very new to ESXi.  I am familiar with the concepts, as I've used Virtualbox from Sun in the past.

  Right now I have a goal to accomplish, and it is using a network and devices that are completely isolated from any networks/machines of production.

  Here's my situation:

  I have a server HP Proliant I bought recently which will be EVENTUALLY used as an ESXi host (for a proof of concept that VM works for the powers that be). It is used. He has a facility registered, valid, supported and complete Windows Server 2008 on what I'd like to preserve.

  I want to "Save" this 2008 Server as a virtual machine using the VM converter and then install ESXi 5 on this server and then copy the original VM 2008 back home (now) and that he is here as a guest VM.

  My problem is I don't have a 64-bit computer at my disposal to use as a host.  A dell laptop Inspiron 1720R. It has 6 GB of ram and an empty 250 gb HD.  I have several machines win XP 32 bit I can use it to run the client. My plan was to use this laptop as my 'temporary' host to convert and store the files of the Server 2008 virtual machine.  Then install ESXi on HP proliant and copy/convert the virtual machine back to run as a guest on the host of original material.

  Here is where I am:

  I boot on the ESXi installation Cd and it ends by brings me to a point where it says 'no network adapters detected' and gives me a choice of F9 or F11.  Exit or retry.  I am sure that it is a driver problem but I'm not sure how (if possible) I can address the issue.   I know that the material is good because if I put a hard drive with WIN 7 OS on it in the laptop it starts and works very well.   Built in network adapter is an Atheros PCIE v2.0.2.

  Again, I am new on ESXi.  If anyone has solutions to this problem of driver, or perhaps another (Global) way to reach my goal (save the original WIN 2008 installation as a VM to use on the same host machine), I would be grateful.

  You may also be able to get around this by simply using VMware workstation on a trial as a host license for that move you - in this way you are not concerned by your material being supported with ESXi.

• How to use the rest of my RAID?

  I'm new in the world of WMware and setting up a new server.  Set up a controller Adaptec RAID 5805 with six SATA 2 TB drives in a RAID 5 with hot spare.  Installed ESXi 4.1 Update 1.  When I click Add Storage, it shows Local of Adaptec with 7.27 TB disk.  I use a block size of 8 MB and create a 2048 GB LUN.  Everything is fine and I have a 2 TB of data to store.  I chose to add storage to carve the next 2 TB, and nothing shows up in the window.  No more local Adaptec disk.  What I am doing wrong?

  The total capacity of my RAID is TB 7.27.  If I understand correctly, I need to prune multiple LUNS, none of which can be larger than 2 TB.  Have I not this wrong all?

  I can do the first OK LUN, but I can't do any additional LUNs, no matter how small or large, I do one.

  Then... I guess it's my basic question, how can I access all my storage space as a data store or several stores of data within ESXi?

  You have created a 7.27 TB RAID. Now in the RAID configuration to make several logical volumes, each no more than 2 TB. Each created logical volume will be exposed to ESXi as a data store can be created from it. You cannot create multiple ESXi LUNS from a single data store/device. In other words, right now you have only one device of 7.27 TB being exposed to ESXi. This is seen as a single device. Once you create a device of 7.27 TB data store, that you cannot create another device even data store (you can only increase the size of the data up to 2 TB store assuming that it has been created under 2 TB) even if there is more space exist. If you use logical volumes (i.e. break it up into multiple volumes RAID RAID controller) you can see several devices that can be added to the ESXi host and different data stores.

  1 license por procesador por ESX

  1 license por cada procesador por ESX VMotion

  1 being laid Virtual Center, para poder hacer vmotion.

• ESXi shell works after being disabled

  I have a 5.5 esxi in my lab at home and esxi shell has been disabled on it. I tried alt + f1, but he won't give me the login prompt. (it is a known behavior)

  I activated esxi shell and he gave me a prompt to enter the user name and password. I have entered the credentials, and then I was able to access locally to the shell of the esxi server. Now the question is once I have disabled the esxi shell - if I type alt + f1, then also it allows to work on it.

  I cannot understand if the shell esxi is disabled (before it was activated) then why it will allow me to work on the console DCUI? any suggestions

  Hi vaibhav,

  Disabling the local shell of ESXi does not stop a session that is already connected to the console. It will prevent new connections only.

  With remote SSH sessions, the behavior is the same: existing ssh session will continue to run after you disable the SSH shell.

• Devices USB 3.0 not being seen by 5.5 ESXI (free version)

  I'm under 5.5 ESXI (free version) and I have recently just got 2 external drives 5 to, these are going to be my new NAS readers who are easily made by samba on a virtual machine Windows Ubuntu LTS 14.04. When I plug the readers to a port USB 2.0, the ESXI OS will detect them and allow me to add them to a virtual machine but USB 2.0 are slow and these drives are capable 3.0 and my motherboard has 2 3.0 ports then why not try to get the extra speed. When I plug these drives into the USB 3.0 ports OS ESXI cannot see them and when you try to add USB devices to the virtual computer it says no device available. No idea as to why this is? IM guess 3.0 is supported on ESXI 5.5 (free version) because it allows me to add a USB 3.0 controller support. Thanks in advance for any help.

  I have SSH on the server and typed this command:

  lsusb

  It gave me a list of all my usb ports and devices. My 3.0 ports not appear. So I started the USB 3.0 xhci driver by typing this:

  vmkload_mod xhci

  then I typed in:

  lsusb

  again and then is! my cameras are now available!

  Add this command to the file /etc/rc.local.d/local.sh that it will always start with the loaded discs.

• 2.2 - ESXi - no State health of OME

  I try to get OpenManage Essentials 2.2 health of ESXi.

  A server ESXi 5.1 and OMSA 7.4 Health Watch
  Servers with 6 ESXi and 8.3 of the OMSA only show a grey question mark.

  I can find no documentation indicating which versions of ESXi and OMSA is compatible with 2.2 OME.

  I found that something was off with the OMSA package deployed via the Update Manager. It showed as being in line with the base line, but I re-uploaded VIB in the Nativity update repository, created a new base line and attached hosts. The hosts showed now also fort and OMSA installed OK.

  OME now see the health status.

  But, under Data Sources in the display of the device, the administrator of the server (storage management) and VMware ESXi have a triangle of yellow warning next to them. How will I know what is the reason for these warnings?
  

• ESXi underperformance of the r.620 vs R610

  All,

  I currently run a server R610 (X 5550 procs) and a unit r.620 newly acquired (e5-2650) unit in a vSphere cluster 5. ESXi running the latest version and the latest patches. Dell servers up-to-date with respect to the firmware of all components. The unit uses internal 15 k SAS R610 leads to host the ESXi hypervisor, while the r.620 uses 2 GB SD cards in mirror for the ESXi hypervisor.

  When I migrated some workloads on the new cluster member (r.620), I've seen some of our process execution times increase dramatically. The process performed on a MS SQL 2008 r2 server. When I migrated the VM on the initial cluster member (r610), execution time is back to the normal time.

  I went then to face a series of landmarks a test virtual machine that has been migrated back and forth between each Member of the cluster and seen repeatable results that showed that the r.620 was SLOWER than the R610 in terms of CPU and memory benchmarks (using Passmark v7.0). Cluster using the EVC Nahalem mode. I have also conducted tests by removing the VCA mode and was able to get similar results with the R610 being the fastest performer.

  I checked all the cores and hyperthreading is enabled. A glance at the guide of best practices for ESXi 5.0 gave anything different in my setup...

  Has anyone seen or heard talk about these issues with the r.620 unit, or E5-2650 processors?

  We had the same problem with our new r.620 (2650v2-E5). The performance was well below our old R710 (X 5550).

  We could solve the problems of performance and to maintain a good ratio of energy saving dig by adjusting the profile' system settings ' in the BIOS:

• Very unstable with ESXi 5.5u2 stock - custom iso R610 would help?

  Decided to upgrade our u2 ESXi 5.1 to 5.5 on our R610:s to get the new hotness and made it the same way I have installed along - just caught the last ISO from Vmware. It worked very well with 4.1 and 5.1; systems have been solid as a rock for years.

  U2 5.5 however has serious problems iSCSI and the stroke of a few machines, drop the iSCSI connections, or both, this is ate one of my virtual machines. Fortunately for backups.

  I didn't while grabbing ISO custom here, but these extremely boring stability problems it solves? I've tried both using iSCSI (how it should be set up initially with 4.1 to get frames) and now with built in hardware Broadcom NIC, but the moment where you put strong pressure on the iSCSI storage begins to fall and causing the catastrophic with the cluster-wide problems.

  In the process of cleaning, I applied the latest firmware patches, BIOS is now 6.4.0, I think it is.

  The probable cause is due to the version of VMware. The Dell custom ESXi version uses specific drivers for Dell servers, where the VMware version does not. It is therefore much more likely that the version of Dell will run more smooth and more stable, the drivers being designed. You can find version 5.5 U2 here.

  OME 1.3 fees deployed on a Server R2 Windows Server 2012. OME server is in the same subnet as the iDRAC.

  OMSA agent for ESXi 5.5 deployed, but not relevant since the updates of the system OME uses iDRAC for ESXi hosts.

  The R910 was discovered and inventoried by WS - MAN on iDRAC and OMSA bot successfully.

  Trying to make an update of the system. I find the server in noncompliant systems, select it, select all 4 applicable updates.
