  FWIW, in case someone found this looking for an answer to the same question, you gave me the answer on answers.yahoo.com. The answer was to log on under administrator account (not just any account which is part of the Administrators group, but the account specifically named 'Administrator') and assign permissions to this account. It worked.

  I found a way around the problem I described in the post. What I did to reinstall Adobe Acrobat XI and do not install the PDFMaker for Internet Explorer, and this solved the problem!
