Relocation of Lightroom: metadata changed / conflict

I recently had to restore the factory settings on my computer.  It was uninstall and reinstall Lightroom.  After this painful process, my images now have one of the two alarming icons in the upper right corner.

I understand that these indicate:

  • pointing arrow up: metadata was changed externally
  • exclamation point: metadata a conflict

Which ever I press, I get the same error message.  Please see the image below:

Screen Shot 2016-07-27 at 8.14.19 AM.png

Some images I edited in Lightroom only and others I exported to Nik or Photoshop to change.

Whatever it is, I want my images to keep the changes that I made.  And I would do a lot to change so that I don't have these arrows upward and the exclamation marks on any of my images in the catalog.

FYI - my Lightroom Catalog is on an external drive.

I do not understand what is meant by "Lightroom should import the settings of disc or replace drive with the catalog settings"?

Would be happy to help with this.

As a general rule, all of your changes to the image and changes to metadata are stored in the Lightroom Catalog.  Depending on the options that you have defined, and if you have invoked some orders, changes and metadata can also be stored in files or in sidecar .xmp (for the raws).  So when you have restored your computer, as long as you used the latest version of your catalog folder, you have all of your changes and metadata.

The icon 'Metadata has changed outside' means that LR think an external application changed the metadata from the image file after the last time that a change has been made in LR.

The icon 'Metadata a conflict' mean that LR thinks that, since the last time RL read the metadata of the file, the changes to the metadata of the image has been made within the LR and by an external application.

I think what happens is that the process of restoring your computer has changed the date of last modification of most of your files (this is the date maintained by OS X and Windows, whenever a file of any type is changed).  This change dates of confuses LR.

Assuming that this is what happened, it is relatively harmless.  To get rid of the warning icons, select all images and make the metadata > save metadata to file.  If you have a very large catalog, this could take a long time to complete, and it may cause your program to backup re - backup images. However, to be on the safe side, I recommend making sure that you have a backup of the two catalog folder itself and your image of all files before you do.

  • Metadata changes

I created a Smart Collection in LR 5.2 with the following criteria, using ALL the rules: status of metadata is conflict detected + metadata status is changed on disk. The goal is to catch all the photos that have been processed by other applications. This works well up to a point. He pointed out all the videos as being changed - where I've added keywords later. As I could not fix with indicator videos, removed all of LR and re-imported, assuming that the flags would be fixed. However, they still appear as changed externally. How can I fix?

LR does not support metadata correctly status for video files, as you have discovered.  I just filed a bug report:

    http://feedback.Photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/bugs_with_video_metadata_status?RFM= 1

You can work around the bug by improving your smart collection:

  • Selection of photos by smart status overview, metadata changed, etc.

I want to be able to select the photos inside Lightroom based on criteria including the debt program but don't let not select you, for instance without previews images, smart shots that have had their metadata changed outwardly, etc..  The system knows what images they are but don't let not consider you a set or act upon them as a whole (building previews smart, AFAIK requires a manual selection in a universal operation or a set catalogue up-to-date, you cannot select only those without intelligent insights).  Because the system keeps track of the State, it would be nice if you could choose this status to view or act upon them as a set.  If anyone knows how to do this, I would appreciate it.

You must look smart Collections. Two of these examples are available in the smart collection criteria.

  • What are all the places where lightroom metadata are written?

Hi, I have a question about the location of all the metadata (IPTC, keywords, etc.), written in Lightroom 5 to my raw files. I understand that this data is written (embedded) jpg files, but as an .xmp file beside the raw files. My question is, if I purge the JPGs and do NOT copy the .xmp files updated constantly to my backup drives, and if I had to lose my Lightroom Catalog, all my Lightroom metadata I've added will be lost? Alternatively, Lightroom keeps all my metadata in the catalog file? Is the Lightroom Catalog the location of the "source" of data that are added to the jpg and .xmp file?

Thanks for any help explaining this arrangement for me!

    DLMST

By default, your metadata are NOT written in JPG or RAW sidecar XMP files.

By default, all metadata are written in the Lightroom Catalog. In addition, there is no way to disable this option, your metadata are always stored in the Lightroom Catalog. So, if you are concerned about making backups and restoring of backups, you must backup/restore photo files and the Lightroom catalog file. In fact, I consider mandatory Lightroom (on a different physical disk) backups of photos and catalog files.

You can optionally write metadata to the JPG or sidecar XMP files, but this method never gives you a complete backup of all of your metadata. It can be a valuable additional insurance.

My question is, if I purge the jpg files

This isn't a good idea, I can't imagine why you would want to "purge" your original photos, especially if you are concerned about their restoration at a later date

  • How the metadata change by Lightroom and another application?

I often get the message "the metadata for this photo has been changed by Lightroom and another application. Lightroom import settings from disk or replace drive with the catalog settings? "on the images in my catalog. I only use Lightroom to organize, add keywords, basic settings, etc.. On occasions, I take a picture in Photoshop to work more, it is exported in a TIFF or PSD file and the original stays in the catalog LR blank any other thing I could do to the image.

I have two choices with this message: settings to use Lightroom, OR crush them to disk. The first time it has scared me, as I had no idea where these changes were and why the disk file was something different that lightroom catalog. I have all my metadata stored in XMP files. But I took the chance and said: replace the LR settings and didn't change anything on the sliders or the displayed image. I then tried a little saying 'Keep the LR settings', and again, I didn't see any visible signs of changes. This leads me to believe that they are NOT changed but things LR, they are somehow. But I do not see it, I want it to go away unless there really changes happening outside of LR (as if I went to the bridge or something...)

Any ideas why this message? I just discovered approximately 100 images in a collection of images, I sent to the Agency in stock three years ago and have not done something with them outside LR since.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Users have complained for years about the fake notifications of metadata has changed.  If you are convinced that you do not change the file itself outside LR, then choosing settings Overwrite will rewrite the metadata in the file with the metadata for catalogue and (usually) to make the fake notification disappear.

Unfortunately, LR does not tell you the metadata fields have been changed, so that users are left flying blind.  In my opinion, Rob Cole had a plugin that will tell you the metadata for the differences between the catalog and the disk file, but its Web site has been down for a couple of weeks now.

ManiacJoe: My guess is that Photoshop updates some fields of EXIF data in the raw, for example the "edited with the software" file field. Given that Lightroom has probably already established in this field, it gives you a warning that something has changed.

Interesting hypothesis.  I just tested with LR 5.7.1, Photoshop CC 2014, OS X 10.10 and could not reproduce the problem.  I have exported a TIFF file to a raw file that is catalogued in the same folder as the raw, TIFF edition and changed some of its metadata in Photoshop, and saved.  LR didn't report a notification of change-a metadata.

In general, I'd be surprised if you changed x.tif in PS, it would change all the metadata in x.cr2 or x.xmp (moderately).

  • Lightroom 2.  Main catalog on the road metadata changes

I tried to find the answer to this in the forums, but cannot, so forgive me if this question was asked a million times.

I'm going on the road with my laptop and will not take along my hard drives.  I want to copy my main catalog on my laptop, take it with me and add metadata (especially keywording and captioning) to files on a trip.  I won't have the DNG, JPEG, PSD, files etc. with me - only catalog.  I want then to come home and incorporate these changes in the catalogue on my desk when I get back home.

Is this possible?  It must be.

    Thank you.

If you not add pictures to the catalog if it is on the laptop and it will not work with the catalogue on the main computer, even if you have a version of the catalog on your laptop, then the easiest way is to copy the catalog (lrcat on PC or Mac file) and the directory previews (a single file on Mac) on your laptop. Your laptop, you will see your photos in the preview files and will not be able to use the slideshow, print, and web modules or develop. You will be able to apply keywords and metadata and build regular and smart collections in the library module, but you will not be able to move a file from one folder to another. Once you have finished, copy the catalog (lrcat) to your main computer file; to be on the safe side, make a backup of the file lrcat on your computer before transferring of your laptop.

The strategy above could also be used if new photos are added on the laptop, but in this case you would need to make sure that you use the same structure of folders on the main computer and the laptop and you must manually copy the photos newly imported on the laptop to the exact same directory structure on the main computer when the work is done. It implies, there is no simultaneous work on the two catalogs because this would require a completely different strategy.

Finally, if you have keyword presets and other presets for metadata that you want to use, you need to transfer these institutions. The presets will be either stored in a folder with your catalog or in a record established by Lightroom. You can determine the location by choosing preferences from the Edit menu and select the Presets tab. Tab preset button "Show Lightroom Presets folder...". "will show you the location of the presets and the"store pre-configured with catalog"allows you to change the location of the folder of presets to be alongside your catalog. Note that having the folder predefined alongside your catalog is the best choice if you are using a single catalog that it facilitates backup and restore operations. Note also that the change of the location of the predefined folder does not move files preset to the new location; This is a manual operation.

I hope this helps. Let me know if something remains unclear.

  • How to Bridge and Lightroom to respect - read - metadata changes?

I have my images of marriage in bridge (6 CS) of the reform and then export them into LR 4.  I usually rate the images I started to reform, but when I import these images in LR, the sides are not.  Similarly, when I tag the images in LR and export, bridge shows all white color labels - no matter what the label was actually awarded.

LR saves all changes and other changes to metadata in its database (= catalog).

In addition to the catalog, you can , namely a xmp (in the case of a Raw photo) file, or in the header (but not in the pixels of the image!) of a JPG, TIFF or PSD.

    Backup to the folder is

_ either check the box > Edit > catalog settings > metadata tab, or manually

_ by going > metadata > save metadata to file (in the Lr library Module), or

_ by going > Photo > save metadata to file (in the develop Module.

When you manually save the file, you can select several photos in the grid view and .

This saving to the file is necessary so that bridge can read and display changes to Lr, because the bridge is unable to read the Lr catalog.

Bridge of saved file automatically (there no option of deselection of her) and Lr will read the bridge metadata when you import the image in Lr.

In the case of an image that is already in Lr, you must select > metadata > read metadata from file (in Lr library Module), or

going > Photo > read metadata from file (in the develop Module). Without this , Lr displays all changes made to the bridge after importation in Lr. Since this would replace all the different changes that you made in Lr, it is best to do this before you more editing in Lr.

The rating stars would transfer of bridge to Lr and vice versa without problems.

For color labels to properly transfer you must make textual descriptions for individual colors identical to Lr and bridge - to upper/lower case, commas, and hyphens, underscores, traits, etc..

    That being said:

I would recommend that you use no bridge for the slaughter of your images. You can make easy logging to Lr. When you manage photos in Bridge and in Lr, you will always have the problem of synchronization of metadata. This can be done, but it needs a flow of meticulous work that is strictly adhered to.

There is nothing in the deck than Lr only *). Simplify your life, choose Lr as your only management and image editing tool, with the exception of CS6 itself (I want to say Photoshop itself, not the ACR).

*) Well there is one thing: since Lr is not a program based on a browser, it does not automatically "see" what's on a hard drive. Photos must be imported so that Lr will 'see' them.

Bridge is browser-based. Which photo is saved on a hard drive - regardless of what program to put there - it will be "seen" by bridge.

Bridge is a valuable tool if a photo is not displayed in Lr and want to check if it is in a particular folder.

  • Lightroom Metadata does not transfer to bridge

    Hello

I have a problem with my metadata description / legend when exporting to Photoshop CS6 area, then save for web and devices.

Once I have a save for web and display the image in Bridge all the necessary fields are transferred from Lightroom except description / legend field.

Here are the steps I followed here.

    > Check automatically save changes to XMP settings cataloge

    > Check the box in the Basic info and legend sub fields in edit metadata presets

    > (Command, E) , edit a copy with Lightroom adjustments

    > Resize then (save for Web and devices) in Photoshop CS6

If someone could offer me advice on this subject, it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

Why do you save for web in PS and not just export from Lightroom to an apropriate size? I guess that you are reasonably new to Lightroom, as everything you want can be done with Lightroom rather than using the 3 possibilities of use: Photoshop Lightroom, Bridge,.

  • Not applied to all the selected images metadata changes

    I have 2 problems.

When I'm in the lightroom library (3.5), I want to change the time of the capture of several photos, apply keywords.

However, when I perform one of these actions, the changes are only applied to the image displayed in the image "brighter highlighted", not all that are selected.

Is there a setting I'm missing?  I can't understand why it does not work.

Also, I aplogize if my search skills are weak, and this has been covered already.  I tried to see if this question has been answered before posting.

    Thank you.

You must be using grid to apply metadata to all of the selected images, otherwise LR only apply it to the image displayed in the main area. You can also on AutoSync swith in the library.

I don't think it's your skills that are weak, but the search function of this forum...

  • Metadata change warning...

I get the little exclamation point and a warning (metadata for this photo was changed by Lightroom and another application. Lightroom import settings from disk or replace drive with the catalog settings?)  on lots of random images and yet there is nothing else that Lightroom will access these files...

    Any thoughts?

    Dana,

It is a catalog that has been converted from LR2? If so, select all the images in your catalog and make Ctrl-S on them (can take some time depending on the number of images in your catalog). Then do a "reading of metadata file' on all of the selected images (Metadata Menu). This should solve the problem.

  • The songs that have had their metadata changed in iTunes have disappeared from my iPhone

I'm a music Apple and iTunes game iCloud user of the music library. Suffice it to say that aloud, it occurs to me that this stuff is a mess and may expect that this works correctly are just wishful thinking.

I use Apple's music since the day wherever she launched. Recently, as in the last two weeks, I noticed that some albums on my iPhone was missing songs. In any case, I think that the missing songs are the ones where I edited the title of the song and possibly other metadata in iTunes. It is difficult for me to check if ALL the Apple music songs where I edited the title are messed up now, but it goes back far enough, certainly before I began to experience songs that disappears.

To give you a concrete example, some time ago, I added the 2pac album "2pacalypse Now." In the Apple's music, this album lacks all the features of the song of songs, so I added back in. For a while things were fine, but recently the songs where I added the functionality for the title of the song disappeared from my iPhone. Now, all I see are five titles that do not have features and a link to "Show full Album" down.

I spoke with @applemusichelp on Twitter last night and they asked me to turn off music Apple and iCloud music library on my iPhone, reboot the phone, identify new in music Apple and reactivate iCloud music library. Did not work. Their recommendation then was, "Don't change the metadata for the Apple music titles in iTunes." To which my answer was: "so why iTunes allows you to edit metadata for pieces of Apple's music in the first place?"

Anyone else having this problem? Someone at - it a solution?

As I said in my recently published issue, the songs have not disappeared. They are still there, but they appear as "Unknown artist" and "Unknown Album" (you can search for them browse by 'Songs' rather than the 'artists' or 'Albums'). This is an extremely annoying bug that I wish that they difficulty - I loved the Apple music was the fact that I could edit the tags...
