Remove a file type association

I have a file extension associated with a wrong program accidentally and now I can't delete it.  I can see how change you it in the properties box - but I don't want to change it-I want to REMOVE completely - I was not able to find the right program for this file extension and continued my search to do it - but at the same time, I need to remove 'Windows Photo Viewer' in the box 'Properties' and I can't understand how do.  I found a program on the internet called "delete file type associations -" but it won't remove the "Windows Photo Viewer" in the properties box.  Could someone provide any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Mary,

Thanks for posting your query in the Microsoft Community. According to the description of the problem you want to remove the Windows Photo Viewer option in the file association list.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to remove the Windows Photo Viewer option in the file association list as it is an integrated program of design.

You can see these articles for more information:

Change the programs that Windows uses by default

When you run an .exe on a Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 computer file, the file can start another program

I hope this helps. Let us know if you need more assistance.

  • Change the file type associations after installation?

    Hello
I need to open/save the MP3 files with hearing. apparently I forgot to tick the box concerned during the part of the configuration of the hearing file type association. is it possible to subsequently add .mp3 to a list of types of files related to the hearing?

I checked - in trying to get around via right click on an mp3 file--> open with... and then look up audition.exe it just goes back to the list of programs to choose but hearing is not the

also, I can do drag & drop mp3 files in audition and work on/with them, but can not save in .mp3. It's a little strange behavior, because I do not see why I can work with the files but cannot really open them with hearing or save them from the inside of the hearing. I hope that I don't have to reinstall it, any thoughts on this?

    Thank you
    Fux

EDIT: I recognized that this also counts for the .pk files, even here...

You certainly click Audition.exe file in the folder Program Files/Adobe/Audition 3.0? See http://www.winvistaclub.com/t19.html to learn how to change file associations in the operating system.

Yes once you have done a backup as the hearing remembers format you saved in what concerns next time when you're just a backup.

    Hey Pan,

Same thing here. It may seem to be that it designed this way (grrr!) such as unassociation is not possible. You can use "Associate any type of file or Protocol with a program" instead.
Associate a type of file or Protocol with a program: this option allows you to refine the default programs based on Protocol or file type. For example, you can have all the .jpg image files open using a specific program, and .bmp image files open using a different program.

  • Windows 7: chain explorer.exe endlessly about the file type association

Today I tried to .jar archives open as files compressed by default instead of running in Java on opening. My first guess on how to proceed was with C:/Windows/explorer.exe, and I did it by r-click on a .jar file, select open with > choose default program... then by navigating to the explorer.exe directory and check the "always use the selected program to open this type of file."

This is where it goes horribly wrong. Apparently, Windows Explorer cannot say himself to open a file with itself. When I try to open a .jar file that is set to open with Windows Explorer, an endless loop of explorer.exe (in thousands) process starts one after the other, until I have run out of memory. To get rid of them, I have to restart.
Subsequently, the checkbox "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is grayed out, so I can't restore the association to its original. Using the command "assoc = CompressedFile .jar ' is as useless."
How to restore the original file .jar extension association? Also, to solve my original problem, how can I make Windows opens files .jar and folders compressed instead of using Java.exe?

I know that the default handler for ZIP is not an executable file directly, but it should be possible to associate with other types.  Filetype associations have two parts: a type of file that describes the file, like "file of Adobe Reader.  Then, who is paired with the type manager who actually links to the actions associated with the opening of this kind.

For jar files to open with the same manager as ZIP, only one side of this pair should be changed in the registry, the .jar extension.  But I wouldn't really recommend a do it manually because of the potential problems of editing the registry.  Set a restore point or backup of the registry, then try the following steps - at your own risk/peril :)
    • Look at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.zip and see the structure.  Note that it says .zip is CompressedFolder.
    • Knowing this, look at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CompressedFolder.  Here you can see the actual command used to open these files (as well as the "friendly display name' which is used to describe these files when you hover over them and others).
    • For JAR files to do the same, you just change the .jar entry, then set it to the default CompressedFolder type.  Who told him to use the same settings as CompressedFolder.
  • I set firefox to open a file type (.) SGF) w / a program, but it doesn't, so I put it to save/apply and no work option, it always opens file link in a new tab.

I went into Options and set the. SGF with Smartgo open file. He refuses to do. Clicking on a link to one. SGF file simply open the file as a text in a new tab.

Given that it did not work, I tried to get firefox to download instead, because then I can open it using the window file type associations. It will not download the file, unless I actually do a right-click and save-as in the link.

It is tedious when displaying a lot of these files. I even put it to wonder after seeing the download option did not work. He don't ask me. What happens here?

    Also, I use firefox 23

EDIT: It seems to be the specific Web site. Some sites will allow me the option to open it in Smartgo, others just it open in a tab in the form of text. What is causing this gap and can it be overcome thanks to the browser settings?

A sample Web site to highlight the issue is:

clicking on one of these links will not download, open, or ask questions about what you want to do with the file.

You can see if you open "tools > Page Info > general": Content-Type: text/plain

    Hi, Unclemarcus2002,

You would be wiser to post on the Forum TechNet where there is COMPUTER experts.

    http://social.technet.Microsoft.com/forums/en-us/newThread

Maybe using the ASSOC and FTYPE command in a script will do what you want? I think that these orders would also apply the association throughout the world, rather than on a per-user basis.

    ASSOC: http:

    FTPYE: http:

Here is an example, that you can try.

Let's say you have a text file called "foo.bar" and you want the extension .bar always open with Notepad. There is an association for text files, so get him by typing "Ftype | more' at the command prompt (it will make a major announcement). Finally, you'll see the line "txtfile". On mine, it's "txtfile=%systemroot%\system32\notepad.exe %1" without the quotes.

First create your association: assoc .bar = FooBarText

Now to assign your request to your file type association: ftype FooBarText=%systemroot%\system32\notepad.exe %1

You should now be able to double-click the foo.bar file and it will automatically open in Notepad.

If you already have a Microsoft Office Document Imaging association, I think that it should be relatively simple type of substitution. Use ftype /? for a little more help.

  • How can I change the file type extension?

    Help please!

I was working in Paint.net and thought that my changes have been saved but I incorrectly saved in Paint.net it as 'nom.1' and making it inaccessible to paint.net or any program being the type of file 'file '.  I then changed the name of "long.bmp", and who seemed like he did to be accessible but Paint.net is still not open it.  On another file that I made the same mistake on, I changed the name to "name2.pdn" that worked and I am able to open it properly.  I tried to change the name on the premiere of "name.pdn" in Windows Explorer, but for this file, it only changes the name "name.pdn" and not the extension.  It's always a ".bmp" file  How can I change to a file real '.pdn '?
