  I recently bought Windows 8 after an online test (aka Upgrade Assistant) from my computer that says it would work. However, when insert the disc of Windows 8, it is said showed an alert/warning that it may work for Windows 7 but can not for Windows Vista or XP.   I have a U400 and I ve installed Win XP on my baby with no problems.

  There are two options; either you'll assign compatible SATA mode (in BIOS), or you leave the option in AHCI mode and will include the SATA drivers that are part of the Intel Storage Manager.
  Intel Storage Manager can be downloaded from the Toshiba page (you can find it in the category U400).

  I managed to include the SATA drivers with nLite and everything worked as it should.
  PS; Win XP should include min. SP2!
