Rename data store files
So, I built a virtual machine and decided the name had to be changed, however the files/ECE data store do not reflect these changes. Sure I like to keep things nice and organized, so my question is how to rename the files in the data store to match the name of the virtual machine without breaking?
Hello
When I need to rename a server and it's data files I do this:
1. vm stop
2. Rename in VC
3. cold migrate to another LUN/storage (take time for a large server som)
4. turn power on. ... Fact
By doing this, everything is renamed (.vmx, .vmfs, records) and the risc of something wrong is very little.
Maybe see this post-> http://communities.vmware.com/message/1110647#1110647

Hello
It's on 11.2.2.4.1
If I move my data store files (ds0, ds1, etc.) to a new location, is there a way to get TimesTen use from the new location?
I tried moving them and update the sys.odbc.ini but get * 10003: unexpected database file exist for new data store * which I suppose is because the TT daemon keeps a record of location of data of the DSN file, as seen in ttStatus.
I have to go through a route of backup/restore (http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E18283_01/timesten.112/e13063/upgrade.htm) to move data files a data store?
Thank you.Yes, if you want to re - locate the control point files or transaction logs you must proceed as follows:
1 stop all activities demand etc. on the data store.
2. make a full backup using ttBackup.
3. remove the data of the memory store.
4. destroy the datastore usign ttDestroy.
5. change the Datastore or LogDir attributes in sys.odbc.ini to point to the new locations.
6. restore the backup data store using ttRestore
7. you can now start and use the data store.
It is the change of safely / supported only the location of the files in the data store.

Hello:
I wonder if there is a way to find the virtual computer (of esx, the data store, file, the pool and etc..) ID name of vSphere CLI power.
The goal is to find the virtual if name machine ID if known (and the same for esx datastore, record pool and etc..).
Thank you

Hello
According to my understanding, we can get the managed object ID of the virtual machines,
$serv = connect-VIServer-Server
Write-Output $vm. ID
The same with others, like first Get-VMHost, store in a variable and then the variable. ID gives you the code.
I hope this helps.

Virtual machines use a data store file?
I think I have a couple of orphaned files hard in one of my data stores, but I hesitate to delete it without confirming that it has been adandonded. I know that I can use the menu change the settings to manually search on each virtual machine if the file in question is in use, but is there an easier way to determine this on the opposite side?
I would like to be able to tell what VM a special hard (or any file in the data also store) is linked to.
Thank you
You can use something like RVTools to check your inventory

Can I export data store files and import them into VMware Player?
Hey guys,.
I was wondering if this outcome is possible?
I want to create a virtual machine (install the OS and software) and then export the virtual computer to use VMware Player or any viewer VM?
Currently, I have ESXi 3.5 and can create virtual machines. I'm not able to find a way to simply export the virtual machine. Is this possible? If this isn't the case, I was wondering if it was possible to export the files in the data store, and then copy them to the VMware Player?
The files in the data store (vmx, vmdk, nvram, vmxf, vmsd, vswp)
Thank you!!!
You can use the free VMWare Converter Standalone (available here: http://www.vmware.com/download/converter/). Use your ESX as target and convert the virtual machine to a VMWare Workstation. I've never tried, but I think it will work.

Shrink the hard drive (data in the data store file)
Hello, I created a virtual machine with a 50 GB HD on ESXi 4.0.
After installing all the software, I noticed that I am currently using only 5 GB of space and I need to support this thesis often I want to shrink the partition to 15 GB.
The OS is Linux with LVM and it's great that I can move/shrink/expand with not too many questions, but how do I shrink a file of data existing in vmware?
Get full even a migration between the old file and another smaller.
A tip on how to get started with it?
Thanks and greetings

The command of the is not available on ESXi.
Maybe you can copy a static version of a Linux system, but I have not tried.

General issue of file on why my data store has 3 files with a _1 and _2
OK, I'm a little new to this thing of VMware, but I was the main actor in this migration and have been the building and move all our servers to our ESX 3.5 with a back-end SAN platform.
I did well until this weird thing, that I think that I understand, but I just don't know how to solve, or how it happened. And right next to the bat, no I did not the instant code with this server... those that have been cleaned in the time there... Now
My situation:
I have virtual machines that are created equal, that they all have a 'C' drive for the operating system on another dedicated "LUNS for OS Storage" and then they have their readers of 'd' of the newspapers "SQL" on a dedicated LUN in mirror, and then the 'E' drive is on dedicated aonther "LUN DATA.
If all servers have 2 or 3 LUNS associated with them. That's how the SAN engineer and I designed it. OK works great. Until one day, I noticed that I was shy about 40 GB space on my SQL LUN. Took time but I think I found the culprit, but I don't know how to solve this problem, or if it will break my dose. So here I ask you all.
One of my servers called "Server01" has 2 drives associated with it and supposedly 2 / 2 data warehouses, or even what he had initially when it was built in August!
Now, the operating system data store is fine.
When I'm on Console V and I click with the button straight on my server and go to his 'change settings' is what I see:
SERVER01of properties on the "change settings of ' Advanced ' your drive hard 1" to the appropriate LUN and all the VMDK and those files are there. "" (IE OS LUN 10)
But "hard drive 2" pointing to the right LUNS (IE SQL LUN11), but his record is called "server01_2"? What? She was built and given a hard drive on this LUN, but the name of the folder is wrong. So I'll browse my store data and low and this is, I have 3 files with the same server name (IE... ( Server01, Server01_1, Server01_2 ) OK so what happened? Why? How? and how in the heck can I get my space back 40gig?
I checked records the name of the original server, as well as the other files on the data store with the numbers in the annex of _1 and 2 and they have all VMDK files in it... of course dates on all the VMDK files are different and I guess that since the server points to the folder called + "SERVER012" + and its VMDK file has the most recent data buffer on this subject since the last Vmotion We did it, he must then use this folder.
OK great... but now that messes up my folder structure, and if this server does not use other VMDK files and folders he ate up to 40 GB of my precious space!
I'm pretty sure when I went on vacation last year, because it is the time of the timestamp on the VMDK files in older records and "dates of the task of the procedures as" trying to clone, suspend, model, reconfgure, snapshot "etc. that the other members of the team tried to do something, which lead to my having 3 files on my store of data with 3 VMDK files in them.? Nobody seems to know or remind us what it is they are trying to do... great... Well...
I just want to know + If the server points to a folder called "Server01_2" and it has the most recent date stamp on this subject, can I then rename other files? + and then I can delete them? And if I successful, how can I get my server to have the name of the correct folder again? Instead of a * _2* on the end of it?
Any suggestion would be great! I learned the hard way that if your VM operating system is built and pointing to a file with a specific name, and you try to rename it to match the server, your operating system does not start!. LOL I hope that is not the case with a folder that has a 20gig assigned to HDD with oner VMDK file in it...
Help!
Thank you

No problem. Cold migration allows you to move all your files in a data store. You can use svmotion to move disks to different LUN, but the syntax is somewhat more complex. The help option shows exactly how to move a machine virtual disk at a time. Basically, you can move a disk with the config file, so basically, you move the config file and the disk of your choice in the data store that you need. Move back the config for the original data store file, then repeat the process with the next disc.

Script for the content data store
Hello
I'm new in the world of Vmware of scripts.
I used powercli and real working examples of scripts to find my way.
I am trying to create an inventory of the existing infrastructure of vmware.
I have a list of all the VMS and their data store, but I also need a data store content.
As:
a list of all the stores of data in a data center.
Download all the contents of the data store (folders, files vmdk, iso files, other files)
A list of all the folders / files with VMservers still known in the inventory.
The goal is to know if there are any files/VMservers on the data store, which are no longer in use and to check if we have duplicate in other data stores files
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
Best regards
Dany
Take a look at the data store provider
Try something like
dir vmstore: \-recurse

How to migrate to VMDK all store data in another data store
How would be migration of VMDK script all store data in another data store.
No, then you must use the Move-VM cmdlet. But this cmdlet moves all files to the destination data store.
The alternative is to use the method RelocateVM_Task , which allows more flexibility to define what that goes where.
It is a good example of your thread has called using several data stores, can not migrate the vmx in a data store file

ESX4 host sees 3.5 data stores, but sees no clients in the data store
This is my first post and I'm having a little trouble finding my way in discussion forums to find answers, please bear with me.
The problem is I had
a system of ESX 3.5 - U2 with a data store external vmfs with VMs 5 or more. I have
installed ESX4 on 2 new servers and offers external storage (FC SAN) of the
ESX4 host, detached from the host of 3.5. Guests can see the vmfs LUNS, and I can't
Browse data warehouses and see virtual machines. 4.0 hosts see data warehouses, but
No 4.0 host sees one of the virtual machines. Any ideas?
I guess that you can browse and see the vm on the data store files. Therefore, you must select the .vmx file, right click and "add to the inventory.

Now my problem is the following. The names of the two virtual machines must be lit. TestBiz must be TestNav. If I rename not only the record, but the files themselves who will break my servers?
I am aware of the mixture to the top, but I don't want others in the future to get confused.
Any help would be great
Thanks in advance
Welcome to the community,
There was a current discussion on VMs rename (change the name of files and folders in data warehouses) which also contains links to some articles in the KB. However, in your case, the virtual machine has an active snapshot, and you should definitely remove the snapshot before you rename the virtual computer!
BTW. where the virtual machine is managed in a vCenter server environment, you can automatically rename the virtual machine by changing the name of the virtual machine in the inventory of the GUI and then he migrate to another data store.

Is there an API to rename a file in a data store?
Hello
I'm working on a backup and restore application, and when I want to restore a virtual disk, I want to rename the vmdk and flat file and copyFile since the temporary data store operation. So, is it possible to rename the files using an API? So that if the operation fails in the Middle, I can at least get back the old files.
Thank you
Daniele.
For the management of the core files, you'll want to use the File Manager and the method will be the task of MoveDatastoreFile(_), similar to that of the mv Linux where you can "move" the file or "Rename" the file.
VMware has a utility of vCLI called vivid that implements this, here are a few examples of what it can do - http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/esx_3i_rcli/vifs.php
