Rename the vMotion Portgroup? (vSphere 4.1u1)

Hello

Before moving to ESXi, we had the VMkernel - also called "VMKernel" vMotion portgroup.

When we went from the hosts one by one, we kept the name of portgroup.

But as it is now only used for vMotion, we would like to rename it accordingly.

Is this possible without problems?

(I realize that there will be no vMotion while we are in the process of name change)

According to this guy, it is nescesarry to delete and recreate vMotion on all hosts trade?

http://emeirell.blogspot.com/2011/08/drsvmotion-sudently-stops-working.html

But of course, it would be easier to simply rename.

Best regards

Martin

Hi Martin,

never happen to me, I don't have that operation of hundreds times on version 4, 4.1 and 4.1U1 4.0.3

what you can do is write down the current configuration in case of problems and vMotion portgroup simply recreate vMotion exchanges on the hosts

    Hello.

Thanks for posting this question, I had also the need to complete the same task today.

I posted my final script I found to work in ESX v4.1 Update 1.

It is basic and annotated for the community to work with in their scripts.

    #Connect to server
    Write-Host "Connecting to server"
    Connect-VIServer -Server 192.168.1.199 -User root -Password Pa55w0rd | Out-Null

    Write-Host "Retrieving server details"

    #Retrieve the host details
    $esxhost = Get-VMHost -Name "192.168.1.199"

#Set Port Group to look for (case sensitive)
    $PGName = "vmotion"

Write-Host "Looking for vmk NIC assigned to vmotion"
#Look for the vmk NIC for vmotion
    $vmkNic = Get-VMHostNetworkAdapter -VMHost $esxhost | where {$_.PortgroupName -eq $PGName}
Write-Host "Deleting vmk NIC assigned to vmotion"
#Remove the vmk NIC for vmotion, once removed it becomes a normal Port Group from a VMKernel one.
    Remove-VMHostNetworkAdapter -Nic $vmkNic -Confirm:$false |Out-Null
    #Set a couple variables
    $redundantpg = "vmotion"

    Write-Host "Removing vmotion Port Group"
#Retrieve the vmotion Port Group details
    $defaultvpg = Get-VirtualPortGroup -Name $redundantpg

    #Remove the vmotion Port Group
    Remove-VirtualPortGroup -VirtualPortGroup $defaultvpg -Confirm:$false |Out-Null

    Write-Host "Disconnecting from server"
    #Disconnect from the server
    Disconnect-VIServer -Server 192.168.1.199 -Confirm:$false

What I've noticed, is that I had to use the switch -VirtualPortGroup instead of -name to remove VirtualPortGroup

    Kind regards

  • How do you rename the files that make up the VM

    Hi guys

I need to know how to rename a virtual computer in Vsphere Client.  If I right click on the VM in Vsphere client and rename, which is not rename the folder and the files in the data store for this virtual machine.  I have rename the VM to what I want, but the folder and files inside still have the old name.  Is it possible to rename that I don't know?

    Hello.

A cold migration or a Storage VMotion will make files and directories match what you have re-named the VMS in vCenter.

    Good luck!

  • Will vcloud Director 5.5 compatible with vsphere 5.1U1?

    Hey,.

We vSphere 5.1U1 running in production and we look at vCloud Director 5.5 for the deployment. But VMware does not have a virtual Director 5.1 appliance and we do not want to buy a server, Redhat enterprise server (we could upgrade vSphere 5.1u1 soon, but due the Veem, we cannot now). Since VMware provides the virtual appliance for vCloud Director 5.5, so I got this question that I can't answer in VMware documents:

Will vCloud Director 5.5 compatible with vSphere 5.1U1?

    Thank you

    / S

Yes vCloud Director 5.5 is compatible with vSphere 5.1U1.

  • Rename the NFS datastore?

I have asked me if there is any problems with renaming data NFS - specifically the situation, warehouses is that the naming convention used these people to NetApp volumes/exports resulted in data duplicate store names - when they are in the vSphere client, it is impossible to determine the name what netapp resources a particular data store matches.

-Can they just 'Rename' these data storage? without risking problems?

And a related question: data store name must be the same on each host? So I mean, suppose that:

NetApp flight = nfsvol1, export = nfsvol and the data store has been nfsvol1

It is also possible to rename the data host 1 store (then maybe it becomes host1_nfsvol1) and then vol2 (so that it is called host2_nfsvol1)?

    Evening,

All storage media use a uuid identifier.  The name of the data store, you can see if a friendly name creates for you (as long as you're in 4.0 or later).  So the answer is you can rename them without effect.  The data store name is not used by vmware, that it is used by you and scripts that you create.

-Can they just 'Rename' these data storage? without risking problems?

Yes you can rename them without any problem as long as your scripts / documentation / automated processes that are created by the user do not need to be named something.

is the name of the data store must be the same on each host?

Not because vmware uses the uuid that is the same on each host.

It is also possible to rename the data host 1 store (then maybe it becomes host1_nfsvol1) and then vol2 (so that it is called host2_nfsvol1)?

You can, but if they are shared between host1 and host2 your forces want the name to be the same to avoid confusion.  It's a personal choice.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

    Thank you

  • VM rename the question?

    Hi all

I have ESXi 4.1 server. on this server, I created a guest operating system named 'testvm '. I've renamed 'testvm'.even "production server", the data store files exists with the name of "records datastore still in testvm.vmx, testvm.vmdk,..."why the old name?»

If you have vCenter and Storage vMotion, you can migrate the comments (change data store) that renames the underlying files. A change of name of an object no renames the underlying files associated with it.

  • Avoid or prevent mirroring of the console in vSphere Client

I'm looking for more information on how to avoid and prevent the mirroring of the console in vSphere Client. As default the console could be perceived by several users at the same time. All those who have access to vSphere Client and server could connect and watch the console.

Is it possible to configure how the Console should behave?

    Cordially Jens

You can add the RemoteDisplay.maxConnections setting in the advanced configuration of the virtual machine settings and set it to 1. If you want to do it without interruption of service, add the following line to each of the. VMX files:

    RemoteDisplay.maxConnections = 1

After editing the VMX file, vMotion, the machine to re-read the config (otherwise the changes do not take effect until the reboot), and who should do it. There is a script PowerCLI here that will try to change this setting on all of your virtual machines.

  • Isolate the VMotion traffic

I can't find other reasons to isolate the VMotion traffic, other than to keep the information unsecurred that they are exposed to the rest of the network.  Is a VLAN for VMotion only a safety precaution?

    Hello

It is not required to devote vSwitch for VMotion, defining the right policy for the use of network cards is enough.

Not sure I agree with that, but it's because of the layer 2 issues more than anything else. It's okay if you APPROVE VLAN. If you do not trust VLAN because of the possible layer 2 attacks within your physical network so it is not acceptable.

There are two reasons to separate the VMotion traffic:

    (1) performance. When you need VMotion you want as quickly as possible, you don't want it was contesting with disk i/o or any other network IO. In generally, it was acceptable to share networks VMotion and SC SC being generally low use unless you're cold migration of virtual machines from node to node, etc..

    (2) security. You absolutely want VMOtion to be separated. Think what you are doing, you transfer the image memory of the VMs on a wire in CLEAR TEXT. Is that if you flip the bit that says to use SSL to ensure this. Despite this, SSL MiTM may be possible (not tested yet). Images of memory contains identifying information. Hackers love this type of data.

So yes, security is the main reason... Are enough VLAN? It depends on your level of TRUST in virtual LANs as well as your security policy.

  • How to stop Motion 5 to rename the items?

How to stop Motion 5 to rename the items?

For example, I have a folder named "Box" inside this folder are 5 additional folders and in these files are text and circles/squares etc.  Once I have copy and insert the name of the parent is "copy of zone 1", the names of children is now "copy print"1", 1 paper copy etc, and children are also name with a copy to the front and a number in the back.  If you like 50 items in the folder, you need to go to each name and remove the copy, then move to the back of the name and remove the number.  That would make 100 corrections.  If you duplicated "Box" 10 times that would be 500 times I have to delete the copies and 500 times I have to delete the number.  I am an organized person and I do not confuse names like "copy paper 27.

    I only want that this

    'Copy of movement case 12-11'

    to look like this

    "Movement block 12.

It takes a lot of time to remove the copy at the front and out the number on the back of name.

In Autodesk Maya 3D they do something similar, it turns 'apples' in 'pasted apples 1 ", so created a script that deletes all the text"stuck"in the name and number on the back the text name.

I think it's a pretty silly renaming procedure.  Adds text to the front and rear.  Makes me wonder where they got their education.

    David

David, for starters I can't duplicate what you describe, where things are added to the front and back automatically, you may need to clarify some things.  Looks like what you're saying is you have Group in movement named "Box" If you copy and paste the group, the name of the new group is "copy of copy of box?  Or you add 'Copy from' before the name of the Group at some point before making a copy/duplicate of the Group?

Movement, like the Finder and many other applications, will add an object in double with 'copy', then add numbers after that. The structure of renaming seems simple enough. For example:

    1. start by a group of layers / named 'box '.

    2. copy and paste "Box" will give you "Box copy.

3 copy and paste 'Copy of box' will give you «box copy 1"»

My tests, if "copy" part of the name at the end, only the numbers will be added and increase gradually.  I think that if you get something like "Box copy copy" you have added manually "copy" at the beginning of the name, which is the only way that I could reproduce what you describe. If you don't want to have to remove 'copy' twice, don't start a layer name or "Exemplary" program group. Motion is probably not check if the copy is at the beginning, at the end.

For what is a way of not having a copy or a number added to the end, it is not a.  It is probably a requirement of how the movement initially creates duplicates of layers/groups and make sure, that it is not destroy the existing layers. This is probably the best. This is similar to the creation of the records or documents in the Finder, just moving, you can go back and rename multiple items with the same name once they are created. If you are uncomfortable with writing scripts, sounds like you are, maybe it's a good option, otherwise you will have to do some manual changes as you go.

  • How do I rename the folder of bookmarks 'Unsorted Bookmarks '? or add a folder at this level?

With the help of Windows8 Firefox EU euballot - 1.1.
Try to rename the folder of bookmarks 'Unsorted Bookmarks'? or add a folder at this level?
I tried the suggestions in the forum (ie. Shift ctrl B); access to the file through library; all no chance.

When you try to add a new folder on the same level as the 'Unsorted Bookmarks' folder, the new folder appears in the folder "Unsorted Bookmarks" and not on the same level.

    Something that I missed?
    Thanks for your suggestions.

I do not recommend this. IIRC, users have mentioned that this folder has been renamed, when they started a new "Unsorted Bookmarks" folder has been created automatically when Firefox.

Computer crashed and Firefox don't remember my session. It happened a few weeks ago while I had looked at how to fix and I learned from my mistake and saved the sessionstore.bak file before restarting Firefox. I closed Firefox, deleted sessionstore.js and renamed .bak to js but to start what it does not always restore session. You can try to restore a previous version of the file sessionstore.js or sessionstore.bak. You must rename the .bak to .js file to make Firefox see this session.
