  Unfortunately, it seems that your hacker friend installed an improved version of Windows 7 and now it is not authentic so it will not be updated.

  The main advantage with the retail license is the clause that allows the easy between future materials transfer if that's the case, but I wouldn't worry too much on this subject.

  Since you have replaced the drive, it would have been a clean install anyway, even if Windows XP was still in use on the system.

  I had same problem with a Toshiba 1 TB drive - I lost on that day and tried at least 10 Windows 7 installs with various behaviours/settings/partitions and still the same result. Cannot run Windows Update.

  I also tried to install Windows 7 SP1 from a DVD and have failed with a catastrophic mistake. I also tried to reformat the disk, the WIndows repair tool (ha!) update and installation when you're standing on my head while reciting the works of Shakespear.

  I gave up in the end and decided to NOT use it as a system disk at all. Instead, I installed Windows 7 on a smaller drive and uses the 1 TB and successfully as a secondary on the same PC drive with a single partition of 1 TB.

  I'm likely to have problems - maybe when the player is more complete and if I might be wise to split into 2 or more partitions?

  I just bought the drive so I can send it if it's going to be a waste of time.

  Hi, again last year, I installed Windows 7 SP1 RC and have had no problems with it until a few days ago when I tried to remove it to get ready for the SP1 RTM, now after checking the web found that I was not the only 1 with the same problem, looking again on the web I was shocked to discover that when I installed SP1 RC uninstalling files have been placed in a temporary folder and that if you did any household on your PC then the files would be deleted and so the only way to remove SP1 RC had to clean install back to factory settings.

  Any 1 knows if microsoft can fix it.

  Please, try the following steps in order:

  1. According to your architecture of Windows 7, download / install and run the tool update system - CheckSur you can download the tool from the links below depending on your system type.

  Download the tool update system (64-bit)

  Download (32-bit) system update readiness tool

  2. click Start type cmd (you should see the command prompt fill up) right click and select run as administrator

  Inside the command prompt, type sfc/scannow

  For more information regarding the file system checker.

  * If corruption is found, see How to use the System File Checker tool to fix the system files missing or corrupted on Windows Vista or Windows 7

  3. once the SFC is finished, check your hard drive for errors.

  4 restart the system update readiness tool.  If errors have been eliminated, try to reinstall Service Pack 1.  If this is not the case, go to step 5.

  5. perform a Startup Repair, when starting, try to install the Service Pack.
