HP doesn't provide downloads of the HP Recovery Manager and you may need to order recovery HP media to get the computer to a factory State.   You cannot use recovery discs to install with, if not for the exact model computer that you install.  You need a full installation detail of the model of Vista operating system you want to install since you don't downgrade your operating system to a system that offers no right of demotion.

HP Recovery Manager has since been removed from the system and I don't have a recovery disk. I tried to install sp45415 that supposedly runs a silent installation for the Recovery Manager program, but it fails silently on my system. The notes say that it applies to Windows 7 computers and the Pavilion dm1 and dm3. There is no mention of the dm4.

  Y at - there a trick to getting sp45415 to work properly?

  If you have uninstalled Recovery Manager he probably removed the recovery of files in the recovery partition. When these files are not deleted download Recovery Manager will install. You will need a recovery media to boot from to restore the files and the recovery partition. If you do not have a recovery media you order from HP.

  As for the files you are trying to restore - if it's a backup of personal files, photos, etc. to the outside hard disk or DVD must be a file .exe inside these files, probably of Restore.exe or Recover.exe. Double click on the .exe will extract files to a folder on the hard drive of your laptop.

  Your computer came with Windows Vista 32 - bit, it is actually able to run a 32-bit OS or 64-bit. As your computer comes with 2 GB of RAM, I recommend you stay with a 32-bit operating system. If you need to upgrade to 4 GB of RAM, I suggest using Windows 7 64 bit instead.

  You must make the recovery W8.1 media now before moving on to W10.

  It will only take up to W8.1, and no matter what you do, it will only retrieve W8.1 by using the HP tool to make the drive.

  Upgrading to W10 has no effect on the change of the W8.1 recovery partition.  Only, it installs W10 on the C:\ drive and makes no other changes.

  Here's how I see the second part of your concern (what concerns me too).

  Like you said after next July, W10 is not free, what happens if you need to restore W10 or you get a new hard drive and you have to install everything.

  First of all, after you upgrade to W10, in the tool settings > activation, you can check that W10 is enabled.

  I'd say you need to reinstall W8.1 and then upgrade to W10 and when you go to turn it on going because he already know that W10 has been installed on the PC before.  Microsoft maintains a database of activation which should allow the PC to have W10 still for free.

  I did use the tool to create system image (windows 7) in the W10 system control panel option.

  My plan would be to try first before anything else.  You can use the installation/repair W10 disc that you create to access the system image that you create, and I hope that will save a lot of time and effort.

  You can update the image of the system as many times as you want, and it will overwrite the existing image on the laptop hard drive.

  But until next July comes and goes, we can only speculate what will be the result of having to reinstall the W10.
