  Thanks for your answer to my question.   I think you can be confused bookmarks with thumbnails. If you click on the miniatures Page icon (the one above the bookmarks icon), you can delete a page by clicking on its thumbnail, clicking the delete page (icon of the Recycle Bin). Just make sure that you see the PDF file in Acrobat (rather than Acrobat Reader), you cannot remove the drive pages.

  Chances are the hard drive failed, but it could be wiring or other materials.

  It is not at all what you mean by the 'toolbar '.   You use Windows Mail in Vista?  If so, you can search the *.eml try to locate emails (see www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx#wm for background), but you will need to provide more information, because it is not clear if you do not see the files or toolbars in WinMail (try to view |) Page layout) or if your all start menu disappeared.  You can also try a system restore, but it seems that you should also check for viruses and malware, according to your description.

  You say that you can not even start in Safe Mode, so method 1 will not help you, method 2 will not help you and 3 method will not help you.

  I start in the XP Recovery Console and first run a chkdsk/r on the afflicted system, but since we don't know anything about your system, we will need more information.
