RN104 immediately 'out of 390 memory' error after 6.2.2 - > 6.2.5-> 6.4.2 upgrade

I decided to update my firmware for 2 years and more old 6.2.2 to a more recent and stable version. Later in the branch 6.4 seemed OK-> 9 months, so I thought that it is proven. I wasn't hurt, I narrowly missed all the problems that others have reported the...

You know, in the work, that I am a responsible administrator, reading notes of any publication, all procedures, laboratory before trying in production tests. But home - well, I'm just a home user better-class. I read the release notes for known issues - no such section in NETGEAR. So I tried forums, not much, so I went ahead. Come on, Netgear! How can you expect users domestic to be able to dig into your KB and/or the forums for hours to learn everything they can or not needed for a successful update? I dig now, because this time has priority! But before, I had homework of my children to help with etc. I don't have another system at home to do the tests on...

Now my system with 5 + TB (4 x 2 TB drives) of data goes into error __out_of_memory_390 on 1 or 2 minutes after I start. All posts here reiterate one and the only solution:

1 save the config and all data (this should be possible even in my situation using 'Volume read-only' option in the Boot menu-> How to check to http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/22891/~/how-do-i-access-the-boot-menu-on-my-readynas-1...).

2 perform a reset.

3 configure the NAS from scratch or restore the configuration.

4. restore your data (can be difficult if you use start files - all users individual need to restore their data themselves as far as I understand it - not even the administrator will be able to restore the permissions correctly - weird for me, but it is also not confirmed).

I don't like this kind of solutions, but enough complaining... I have only used the SIN as a NFS storage device and wasn't using snapshots on the NFS share, and was not using any other feature. Nevertheless, I believe that my problem can be caused by too many clichés. I think that this _must_be_ article related to all the release notes and upgrade the firmware procedures:

http://KB.NETGEAR.com/app/answers/detail/A_ID/30033

So far, I tried "Reinstall OS" in the menu of boot without success. This morning, I put in a working spare 500 GB and put disc to update firmware for 6.5.0. The machine works well, but my goal is to put in my 4 drives (he'll upgrade the firmware of drives for what is in flash on the NAS, i.e. 6.5.0) tonight in the hope that: -.

-l' error not at all, or

-at least I'll have enough time to remove a few shots before they appear.

If this isn't the case, I'll try to upgrade to 6.5.1 using the scratch disk and try again. If no success, I have to take the system to the laboratory work to safeguard, reset and restore. I don't have any other place where I can find 6 TB of space...

I will let you know my results.

Now, I wanted to pass my message to: -.

-Community = hourly defrag/scrub/balance of your berries + disable and remove snapshots if you don't need them + do not trust the seller this update of the firmware is painless and safe.

-Netgear = no home user is interested by the products for which you have 10 + years of experience to set up and maintain and 1 day of research work of documentation to just update of firmware and backup data off it just in case.

I'm not out of the woods yet, but I've made considerable progress.

I was able to start mode 'volume read-only', which was reassuring. At least I'd be able to save data...

So, I tried to find what is really happening in the system. So I connected via SSH and looked at the use of the system. As soon as the volume of data has been mounted, btrfs-cleaner process appeared. He attached the CPU at 100%, which would not be a problem in itself. But it also consumes more and more memory and when the system began to Exchange, he on the ground to stop. I did another test - started in 'volume read-only' mode, logged as root and run "mount-o remount, rw/data". The result is the same--btrfs-cleaner ate all memory, swapping started, the system stopped. Still, the finger is pointed on either (too many processes etc) snapshots, or quotas (newly introduced function).

After another "volume read-only' mode initialize-go to top, I ran this:

Mount o remount, rw/data; Btrfs quota disable/data

and the system remained OK, no btrfs-cleaner, nothing. So I put all other btrfs file systems (get the list with ' mount | grep btrfs'). In my case:
-the list of volumes of btrfs: -.

md127/dev/on/data type btrfs (rw, noatime, nodiratime, nodatasum, nospace_cache, subvolid = 5, subvol = /)
/ dev/md127 on /apps type btrfs (rw, noatime, nodiratime, nodatasum, nospace_cache, subvolid = 257, subvol = / .apps)
/ dev/md127 market/House type btrfs (rw, noatime, nodiratime, nodatasum, nospace_cache, subvolid = 256, subvol = / home)
/ dev/md127 on/var/ftp/home type btrfs (rw, noatime, nodiratime, nodatasum, nospace_cache, subvolid = 256, subvol = / home)
/ dev/md127 on/run/nfs4/data/Shared type btrfs (rw, noatime, nodiratime, nodatasum, nospace_cache, subvolid = 275, subvol = / Shared)
/ dev/md127 on/run/nfs4/home type btrfs (rw, noatime, nodiratime, nodatasum, nospace_cache, subvolid = 256, subvol = / home)

-orders up and disable quotas: -.

Mount o option remount, rw/home; Btrfs quota disable/Home
Mount o remount, rw /apps; Btrfs quota disable /apps
Mount o option remount, rw/var/ftp/home; Btrfs quota disable/var/ftp/home
Mount o option remount, rw, run, nfs4, host; Btrfs quota disable/run/nfs4/home
Mount o remount, rw/run/nfs4/data/Shared; Btrfs quota disable run/nfs4/data/Shared

Note that run/nfs4/data/Shared is my NFS share and you will not have it for sure. Your list may be very different.

Still no btrfs-cleaner, the system still running OK. So I removed all the snapshots (note: I do not use them at all, your implementation may be different, but you may need to do too much in to restore the system).
How to remove snapshots - well, first you must have a list of the configs - they are in fact numbers and their number corresponds with the County of volume btrfs: -.

LS/etc/snapper/configs

You can also find what config is for how much (smilies are actually two points and the capital S);

root@Kostka:~# grep VOLUME/etc/snapper/configs / *.
0UBVOLUME = "/ data/backup".
1UBVOLUME = "/ data/Documents.
2UBVOLUME = "/ data / music»
3UBVOLUME = "images / data / '.
4UBVOLUME = "/ data / Shared.
5UBVOLUME = "/ data/videos»

Then run for each configuration:

list

It will show you something like:

Type   | #   | Pre # | Date of                             | The user | Cleaning | Description | UserData

And now, you clean all of them, but the current. The command is "snapper - c remove 1 -", in my case, for example "remove snapper - c 0 1-181'." They were all size zero, so it took less than a second.

I then rebooted in normal mode. The current state of the system is:-
-Snapshots deleted and all the decision-making of snapshots off.
-Disabled quota. It is for sure not supported by Netgear. Some things may be broken. Firmware update may enable them or fail because of them being disabled. Etc.
-Now I'm balancing, defragmentation and rub the volume. I have not found in what order it is best to do, KB #26941 Netgear's advice is to rub rarely, defrag occasionally and balance regularly. My volume 6 TB took 10.5 hours balancing, 4.5 hours to defragment and it took 13 hours to rub at 30%.

Next steps: -.
-Check the integrity of the data.
-Activate the quotas and see if the system comes up normally.

    You have apparent dbx file corruption. A common problem.

    Spend most of your messages out of the Inbox and then create new folders to send and sent items box after having moved the messages you want to save to a local folder that you create.

    Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Note the location and navigate on it in Explorer Windows or, copy and paste in start | Run.

    In Windows XP, Win2K & Win2K3 the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show hidden files and folders under start | Control Panel | Folder Options icon | Opinion, or in Windows Explorer. Tools | Folder options | View.

    With OE closed, find the DBX files for the items in the Outbox and sent and delete them.  New ones will be created automatically when you open OE.

    After you're done, followed by compacting your folders manually while working * off * and do it often.

    Click Outlook Express at the top of the the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work offline (or double-click on work online in the status bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed.

    General precautions for Outlook Express:

    Do not archive mail in the receipt or sent items box. Create your own user-defined folders and move messages you want to put in them. Empty the deleted items folder daily. Although the dbx files have a theoretical capacity of 2 GB, I recommend all a 300 MB max for less risk of corruption.

    Disable analysis in your e-mail anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that devours the CPUs, slows down sending and receiving and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes and has even been responsible for the loss of messages. Follow these steps to try to solve your problems of boot.

    Restore point:

    Try typing F8 at startup and in the list of Boot selections, select Mode safe using ARROW top to go there > and then press ENTER.

    Try a restore of the system once, to choose a Restore Point prior to your problem...

    Click Start > programs > Accessories > system tools > system restore > choose another time > next > etc.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    If restore work not and you do not have a Vista DVD from Microsoft, do a repair disc to do a Startup Repair:
    Download the ISO on the link provided and make a record of repair time it starts.
    Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.
    At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu.
    When you have changed that, insert the Bootable disk you did in the drive and reboot.
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial148.html
    Link above shows what the process looks like and a manual, it load the repair options.
    NeoSmart containing the content of the Windows Vista DVD 'Recovery Centre', as we refer to him. It cannot be used to install or reinstall Windows Vista, and is just a Windows PE interface to recovering your PC. Technically, we could re-create this installation with downloadable media media freely from Microsoft (namely the Microsoft WAIK, several gigabyte download); but it is pretty darn decent of Microsoft to present Windows users who might not be able to create such a thing on their own.
    Read all the info on the website on how to create and use:
    http://NeoSmart.net/blog/2008/Windows-Vista-recovery-disc-download/
    ISO Burner:http://www.snapfiles.com/get/active-isoburner.html
    It's a very good Vista startup repair disk.
    You can do a system restart tool, system, etc it restore.
    It is NOT a disc of resettlement.
    And the 32-bit is what normally comes on a computer, unless 64-bit.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Data recovery:

    1. slave of your hard drive in another computer and read/save your data out there.

    2. put your Hard drive in a USB hard drive case, plug it into another computer and read/save from there.

    3 Alternatively, use Knoppix Live CD to recover data:

    http://www.Knopper.NET/Knoppix/index-en.html

    Download/save the file Knoppix Live CD ISO above.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm
    Download the Vista software from the link above.
    After installing above ISO burning software, right click on the Knoppix ISO file > copy the Image to a CD.
    Knoppix is not installed on your PC; use only the resources of your PC, RAM, graphics etc.
    Change the boot order in YOUR computer/laptop to the CD/DVD Drive 1st in the boot order.
    Plug a Flash Drive/Memory Stick, BOOT with the Live CD, and you should be able to read the hard drive.
    When the desktop loads, you will see at least two drive hard icons on the desktop (one for your hard drive) and one for the USB key.
    Click on the icons of hard drive to open and to understand which drive is which.
    Click the icon for the USB drive and click on "Actions > Change the read/write mode" so you can write to disk (it is read-only by default for security reasons).
    Now to find the files you want to back up, just drag and drop them on the USB. When you're done, shut down the system and remove the USB key.
    See you soon.
    I repeated this problem 3 times now with the increase of the memory_target allocations and memory of the o/s. It seems is not around to the place even.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks Mark
    We will try to see if we can reproduce the memory leak.
    But first some notes for your reference:
    1. the image is more than 40 GB, which is not very small. but blocking size is 20000 x 1 x 3, that is to say, each block has a single line, 20000 columns, and 3-band. so it ends with almost 1 million blocks in the georaster object. who is a typical image of blocking file, but this is not a good practice for georaster object in an RDBMS. Given the size of this mosaic image, I would recommend 516 x 513 x 3 (best of SDO_GEOR_UTL.calcOptimizedBlockSize), 3 x 512 x 512 or 1024 x 1024 x 3 for block size. Some recommendations and tips are discussed in the following article: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/spatial/pdf/georaster_scale_twp.pdf
    2. the 48 images were 'loaded without parameters of storage (taking all defaults)'. so, of course, the original files have a 'blocking' of 20000 x 1 x 3, at least this is the case for image management. In general, you should always specify a size of block (at least 256 x 256 or greater) when you load the image into georaster data. There is a paradigm shift here from file system to the database system.
    3. When you do sdo_geor.mosaic, it is always important to explicitly specify parameters of storage as well, particularly the size of block, depending on the size of the mosaic of output.
    4. If you have enough space, maybe you want to try the following:
    (1) decomress and re - block Mosaic: sdo_geor.changeFormatCopy (gr1, 'blocksize = (516,513,3) compression = NONE', gr2);
    (2) generate the pyramid on the mosaic uncompressed: sdo_geor.generatePyramid (gr2, ' rLevel = 20, resampling CUBIC, nodata = TRUE = "");
    (3) compress the result in deflate: sdo_geor.changeFormatCopy (gr2, 'compression = DEFLATE', gr3); -This is not necessary if you have compression fist stage
    (4) make sure that you create a RTD for each gr1 gr2 gr3 and and use SECUREFICHIERS lob. After varification, drop gr1 and gr2 and their tables RDT.
    will update you the test result. Thank you
    Jeffrey
