Run chkdsk/r, 67% complete stage 4/5

Hello

I am running chkdsk /r on a 6 to LUN (a DISK SCSI SATA 1 GR) that is connected to the Windows Server 2003. It worked for 7 days now, in fact it is showing the status (67% complete stage4/5) for 6 days now. I wasn't expecting to take so long, of course, I am waiting to finish him off. CHKDSK process is currently consuming 1448 K of memory and cpu 0.  The disc is a backup media running of chkdsk/r on the search for error of corruption of data for backups of the customer
Please help me if I can give up here in a safe way, I can't afford the disc should be blocked and more.
Thanks in advane

  • Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the Volume: C:. Please run Chkdsk /f.

I know this question has been asked several times, but I did these steps and still not get Defragmenter to work.  My Disk Doctor said I don't have problems with my Defragler work program - but I don't have a C: drive not 'dirty '.  I have Windows XP Home Edition and do not know how to run an XP Recovery Console.  Y at - it an easy way just to get the Defragmenter to work?... when I run Chkdsk... It goes through stages and then closes and the problem is still there.  Defragmenter just stopped working, my computer everything works fine.  Help, please.

Hmmm...  It should only take a few minutes for ImgBurn to create the bootable XP Recovery Console CD, then maybe one of the songs that you have downloaded (xp_rec_con.iso or install IgmBurn) won't quite right.

You want ImgBurn to play a happy tune when it is successful and a "Oh no!" message when it fails, but it shouldn't take hours to burn this ISO file bit.  You can try another system.  You can always uninstall ImgBurn when finished.

I say 'be patient' when you run the chkdsk /r command because sometimes it seems to be stuck (or even go back), but it should end later.  Depending on the volume size, the amount of data on the volume, the speed of your system and what the chkdsk finds to do, you can watch several hours.

Look at these words from the mouth of Microsoft:

If you use chkdsk /f on a drive or drives for very large (for example, 70 gigabytes) with a very large number of files (for example, millions of files), chkdsk may take a long time (for example, over several days) to complete. The computer is not available during this time because chkdsk does not relinquish control until it is completed.

At the time of this writing, I'm guessing a disc 70 GB was "very large" but it is quite modest by today's standards.

Now with today's technology, it is unlikely to take days, but it could still take some time!  If your HARD drive is afflicted with a problem material and dying, it can never finish or be unable to fix things.

To start XP, it automatically checks each volume to see if it is dirty and will try to run chkdsk from the afflicted volumes.  Sometimes, it's good enough to clear the dirty bit, sometimes it isn't.  You will see a message at startup if the volume should be checked for consistency and XP will do the best.

That's exactly what the message tells you:

Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume: (c :))

You can query the dirty bit on a volume from the command prompt window.

Click Start, run and enter in the box:

    cmd

Click OK to open the command prompt window.

To query the bit of impurity on drive C, type:

    fsutil dirty query C:

    The sample output:
    Volume c is dirty
    Volume C: is dirty

Type "exit" to close the command prompt window.

If you are suspicious of your HARD drive and think it might be failing, now would be a good time to backup your personal data (documents, pictures, music, etc.) to an external location - a separate attached USB drive or a few clouds on the Internet.

  • CHKDSK does not complete

I tried to run chkdsk for several days without success.  I'm running it with the switches / r/f.

The error message I get is:

CHKDSK checks the files (stage 1 of 5)...
    360896 file records processed.
    Verification of complete files
Delete orphan file record segment 141083
141083-readable file record segment is not writable
Windows has finished checking the disk.

Then, the machine starts with Windows.

I am running Vista Ultimate SP1

A reflection as to why this is happening?

    Thank you

Have you tried to run outside of the Windows environment?  If you have an installation DVD that you can start (or an option of startup repair via the F8 Safe Mode screen), try running the command prompt, among the options provided when you walk down the path of the Startup Repair.

Not to perform the Startup Repair, just search, go to the option to the command line (from to choose a recovery tool dialog box) and try to run Chkdsk from statement.

To check and repair your system drive, the check must be done on the next boot before Windows loading completely.  When you entered your command chkdsk c: f, it should tell you that it could not be done now, and it's OK to do the next time.  You then answer "Yes" and then restart your computer.

  • How can I run CHKDSK /F on a blue screen on Windows XP? I can not at all to a command prompt.

I accidentally shut down my computer for an update.  Now I can only get a blue screen with a message saying that a problem has been detected and I need to disable or uninstall any anti-virus, backup utilities or disk defragmentation.  He told me to check my hard drive configuration and to search for updated drivers.  Then it is said to run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption.  The technical information is: 0 x 00000024 (0 x 00190203, 0x8638c6c8, 0xc0000102, 0x00000000).  I can't run Windows in safe mode, I can't seem to run in its final configuration, nor can I get it to go to a command prompt - it just goes back to the blue screen.  I also tried to put in my XP disc that came with the computer, and it helps not at all either.

Unfortunately, the Microsoft Answers forum still does not prompt for any kind of information system when a new question is asked, so we don't know anything about your system.  Not knowing the basic information a problem prolongs the frustration and the agony of these issues.

Maybe someday the dialog box 'ask a question' forums XP will ask these questions automatically when a new thread is started so I don't have to ask every time.  It might even be possible to solve a problem in a single response when enough information is provided.

I think I'm about to lose hope on this fantastic.

The question was preceded by a loss of power, aborted reboot or abnormal termination? (This includes the plug pulling, buttons power and removing the battery).

These can cause corruption in the file system that must be fixed before you do anything else.

If none of these events occurred (or even if they have not taken place), you must verify the integrity of your file system before anything else (especially "try" things).

There is zero logic to begin to try to begin to try to modify or copy files to a hard drive that has a corrupted file system, so this must first be fixed using the XP chkdsk program and run chkdsk on your hard drives may solve your problem completely.

Use the XP Recovery Console to check the file system on your HARD drive and fix the problems and then try to start your system - this may be all you need to do.  Or, you are welcome to just start trying things that might work.

Boot into the Recovery Console Windows using an XP bootable installation CD.

If you have no XP bootable media (or aren't sure you have) create a bootable XP Recovery CD of Console and do not forget.

This is not the same as recovery disks that may have come to a store to purchase the system.

You can make a bootable Recovery Console CD by downloading an ISO file and burn it to a CD.

The ISO bootable image file you need to download is called:

    xp_rec_con. ISO

    Download the ISO from here:

    http://www.mediafire.com/?ueyyzfymmig

Use a new CD and this simple and free program to burn your ISO file and create your bootable CD:

    http://www.ImgBurn.com/

Here are some instructions for ImgBurn:

    http://Forum.ImgBurn.com/index.php?showtopic=61

It would be a good idea to test your bootable CD on a computer running.

You may need to adjust the computer BIOS settings to use the CD-ROM drive as the first device to boot instead of the hard drive.  These adjustments are made before Windows tries to load.  If you miss it, you will need to restart the system again.

When you start on the CD, follow the instructions:

Press any key to boot from CD...

    Installing Windows... going to pronounce.

Press 'R' to enter the Recovery Console.

Select the installation that you want to access (usually 1: C:\WINDOWS)

You may be asked to enter the password (usually empty).

You should be in the folder C:\WINDOWS.  It's the same as the

C:\Windows folder that you see in Solution Explorer.

The Recovery Console allows base as file commands: copy, rename, replace, delete, chkdsk, fixboot, fixmbr, cd, etc.

For a list of the commands in the Recovery Console, type help at the prompt of commands or read on here XP Recovery Console:

    http://www.Microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/proddocs/en-us/recovery_console_cmds.mspx?mfr=true

A good idea before you start things must first verify the integrity of your file system by using the chkdsk command.

In the command prompt window, run the chkdsk command on the drive where Windows is installed to try to fix any problems on the afflicted player.

Running chkdsk is fine, even if he finds no problem.  It won't hurt anything to run it.

Assuming your boot drive is C, run the following command:

    CHKDSK C: /r

Let chkdsk finish to correct the problems, he could find.

It may take a long time for chkdsk complete or they seem to be "stuck".  Be patient.  If the HARD drive led blinks always, chkdsk is something.  Keep an eye on the amount of the percentage to be sure that it is still making progress.  It may even seem to go back sometime.

You must run chkdsk/r again until it finds no error to correct.

Remove the CD, and then type "exit" to exit the RC and restart the computer.

You have not to set the BIOS to boot the disk HARD since the CD won't be.

I run chkdsk without switches on win xp home. I told myself I file error and to set running chkdsk with /f. but when I try, I get the cannot lock the drive, chkdsk may not run because ect...  I tried in safe mode, same thing. I sfc/scannow, but it has not fixed the problem files. help please

It's normal.  You can not run a check disk on your system disk because your system is to use.  The Message you get should ask you if you want to run it at the next reboot.  You must answer 'Yes' to this message, and then restart your computer.  A disk check should take place as it is restarted.

FYI: A check disk can take hours if you have a large drive or there are a lot of problems on the disc and you cannot use your machine while the scan is in progress.  Better to operate during the night.  Also, I got checkdsk completely erase the hard disk to the point where the only option was to reformat and reinstall Windows.  Make sure that your data available are well-supported before running Chkdsk.

  • Running ChkDsk

I am currently running Windows XP on my computer.  MY computer gave me various error messages indicating that I need chkdsk to repair the registry.  I also have Norton 360 on my computer.  I try to run a utility that could clean my registry but I get an error message that it cannot be run please run Chkdsk.  So, I go to run and type chkdsk.  The BACK screen opens, and begins to run the 3 steps.  I watch it count to 100% at first.  Before he gets there he removes various corrupt points.  I can't read or write because they pass so quickly.  After the first stage is over, I think the back screen disappears every time, without performing the steps 2 and 3.  I keep getting the same error messages about running chkdsk.  I don't know what to do at this point.  I have run norton, but Norton detects a virus.

    Thank you.

When the system indicates that a disk check is required to be played, it is basically telling you that the file system is damaged and the files on the disk must be re-indexed, that is reconciled with the master file table.

a registry cleaner and a file system check disk utility are totally different from each other.

my suggestion is to drop a registry cleaner and run a check disk instead.

the best method to run a disk check is done via the recovery console by using any xp cd.

    Hello

    ·        Since when are you facing this problem?

    Method 1:

You can run the check disk by booting in safe mode and check if that helps. To start in safe mode follow the link given below.

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/315222

Once you start mode without fail, try and run the disk check and check errors.

    Method 2:

If you are not able to run the check disk in safe mode, you will need to boot into the recovery console, and then run check say. To do this, you need the Windows XP installation disc. The enforcement procedure checks the disk in the recovery console.

    (a) Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive and restart the computer.
Note: Click to select all of the options required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted to do so.

    (b) when the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Console history.
Note: If you have a dual-boot or multiboot, select the installation that you want to access from Console history.

    (c) when you are prompted to do so, type theAdministrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just C:.

    (d) to historic Console command prompt, type the following then C::

    Chkdsk /r

    (e) allow to run INTACT until the completion

    (f) report any error

    Hope this information is useful.

  • How can I run Chkdsk?

    Hello

I want to defrag my computer so that it runs faster. I know how to do this, but whenever I go to the program he said: he can't defragment it because C:\$Mft file is corrupt, run Chkdsk utility \f.  Well, I think I found the Chkdsk utility. I run it, but it says: warning F parameter is not defined, in read-only mode. So I think I have run the Chkdsk utility, but not really. I will return to defragment and it still gives me the same message. When I search for all files, it does not find this file. When I sought help it says that you need to run Chkdsk with Autochk.exe or \%systemroot%\System32.  I found this file on my hard drive, but it does not work in windows 32 mode. Whatever it is?  Can someone help me figure out how to run Chkdsk, so that I can get rid of the corrupt files and defragging my computer.

    Thank you

In your message that you type "Chkdsk \f" and the correct method would be "chkdsk /f" with slash for the chkdsk command options.

This is one of the many articles that can help you understand how works the command chkdsk and how to use it to your advantage.  It is good to know how to do, but it is also good to understand.

    http://vlaurie.com/Computers2/articles/Chkdsk.htm

If you do a search on Google for:

    XP chkdsk

You will find several short articles, which you can read in different levels of detail and scope.

The chkdsk command can only solve the problems when it runs when XP is not completely loaded yet.  It would be on the next boot of XP before XP is fully charged or the XP Recovery Console.

CHKDSK can only solve the problems when the volume is locked and in what Microsoft calls a "static condition."  Two ways to ensure that you are in a static state is to run chkdsk from the Recovery Console or to schedule a chkdsk to run the next time the system restarts by responding affirmatively to the question:

Would you want to check this volume to be the next time the system restarts?

If you run the chkdsk operation includes recovery of errors and control options (if you choose to fix things) and you let chkdsk runs automatically at the next reboot, you may be interested to know what happens if found (results will disappear from the screen when it is finished).

Here is how to do this.

When chkdsk runs automatically restart either because XP thinks he needs to (perhaps your NTFS volume has been marked as dirty) or you have chosen to do it yourself, the results appear in the viewing Application event log.  You should look there for the chkdsk log and no problems after running chkdsk.

To view the logs in Event Viewer, click Start, settings, Control Panel, administrative tools, event viewer.

A shortcut to the event viewer is to click on start, run and enter in the box:

    %SystemRoot%\system32\eventvwr.msc

Click OK to launch the event viewer.

Search the Application log for an event originally by Winlogon, something like:

    Event type: Information
    Event source: Winlogon
    Event category: no
    Event ID: 1001
    Date: 04/08/2010
    Time: 11:25:57

    Hi Markgod5,

Thank you for visiting Microsoft Answers.

It seems that the hard drive is damaged if we get this error message to running chkdsk.

You can start the computer in safe mode with command prompt and see if you can start.  Then run the chkdsk command.

To do this follow these steps:

    (a) restart your computer if it is running.

    (b) press F8 after your computer powers initially on.

    (c) once you see the menu Advanced Boot Options, you can stop tapping.

    (d) use the up/down arrow keys to select Safe mode with command prompt.

    (e) in the command prompt window, type the following command and press enter Chkdsk /R and Chkdsk /F

Using recovery DVDs, you cannot switch mode winRE (Windows Recovery Environment) to run chkdsk. You need DVD full version (Win 7/Vista) or Vista repair disk.

You probably won't be able to install win 7 because the problem is with the hard drive and chkdsk should be run for the error.

Hope the helps of information. Please post back and we do know.

  • The computer says to run chkdsk b/c the program files are corrupted. When I run chkdsk/r, it indicates that the NTFS is locked and I have to restart to run chkdsk. When I reboot, the chkdsk never runs.

    Original title: Program Files gone?

Recently, I started my computer and noticed that a bunch of files are corrupt, and left most of my shortcuts.  I went into Program Files and discovered the entire file completely empty.  The computer says to run chkdsk b/c the program files are corrupted.  When I run chkdsk/r, it indicates that the NTFS is locked and I have to restart to run chkdsk.  When I reboot, the chkdsk never runs.

My wife has all of its graduates work on the computer, I backed up since then, but I try to avoid doing a restore of the entire system.  Can you help me?

Also, try to start the computer in Mode safe.
When the computer is switched on 1, start pressing F8 until you get a menu of Windows startup, choose Safe Mode.

Sounds like something important happened (corruption).  If you have important data there (for example, your wives, diploma work), I would strongly suggest taking the computer to a qualified technician so that they can recover data out of there before the drive goes down or the o/s is too damaged.

  • Each exe file I open me gives a "corrupted file... run chkdsk', but the analysis of virus and malware are clean?

    Hello

I'm completely puzzled here. When I started my computer today I got a notification saying one of the start-up programs exe file has been corrupted. I think that "uhoh". Then my antvirus software is dΘmarre with the same and I get the notification that I'm not running and antivirus. Then I realize counts all exe files I click gives me the error "file is corrupted... Please run chkdsk" appear in the taskbar. At this point, I am thinking virus or malware.

Some programs still work even with the corrupted message, but every exe, whether old or newly downloaded, will give me this corrupt message. Also, when I tried to reinstall my anti-virus, he wouldn't. (I'm under Avast Internet Security Pro).

I found myself downloading AVG free and for some reason any that exe is not being corrupt. So I at least have a running antivirus software now.

I scanned my whole system with AVG with the latest virus definitions, and it sees no virus. I run only Malwarebytes with the latest updates... nothing there either.

Is my computer clean? For me this seems unlikely, but there is something that is not a virus or malicious software that could cause this?

Also, I started in safe mode, and it makes exactly the same thing. Each exe is corrupt when I open it.

I am all of these ideas, except to the reformat.

    Thank you

    Mike

I don't see you mention on running "chkdsk".
    So, do you?

How to run the check disk (chkdsk)... assuming you are using Vista

Start button > Search box, type cmd > look up, right-click on cmd.exe > Run As Administrator >

in the black and white window, at the command prompt flashes, type chkdsk/f/r > press the Enter key.
Note: there is a space between 'chkdsk' and ' / '.
The screen will say something like cannot do it now, but you want to run it on reboot. Click on 'y' as in Yes > press > window cmd of output.

Restart your computer. It will take a while. DO NOT stop the machine. Just wait.

Do I need a subscription special to run chkdsk these days or something! You get ridiculous with all these permissions in Microsoft file. You're going to have geeksquad running red flower in the face, embarrassed as _ because he cannot understand
How to run CHKDSK with eleveated privileges. Well I tried and still no luck, embarrassing isn't? It will however run out of system32.
It does not work from the cmd prompt start menu without elevated privileges. I tried to change the permissions of security and even taking and evolution of the property from the user account created during the installation of RC7, which is be in the users group, not to the Administrators group. Run from the system32 directory it is impossible to specify the /F switch so that it can be run on the next startup. Come on Microsoft, meet... CHKDSK is completely useless, our taken utility... can you imagine past a repair with that call?

    Hi eKrAsh,

Thank you for using answers Forum.

You can click Start, click computer, then right-click on the C: folder (if it is the HARD drive) and click on properties, then click on tools.

You can click on the button check now in the error checking section to test the CHKDSK command.
You may have to restart your computer.

    I hope this helps.
