  After have it off my W540, (most of the time) the power button flashes, the fan will run for about 20 seconds to 1 minute until the fan stops and the power button stops flashing.   OK, I wanted to just update this thread with my last State on my problem. I tried everything that I could think of to try and fix my sound. I used a lot of different antivirus programs to see if I could find an infection as the cause. while I found some infections, they do not seem that cause problems. as a last resort, I backed up all my data and programs on an external hard drive and did a complete reformat and install windows xp. While the sound does not work at first, install the right driver for my sound card did the trick after the new installation of xp. so I didn't really want to resort to do a full reformat because of how long it would take, but he turns out to be the only solution to my problem. now, I just spend a good all by restoring all my data and programs, but, overall, it is useful to have her back. What a strange question however. I can't say I ran across that one before and I am not sure what caused it, but I think that it is a corruption in DirectX that I couldn't fix.   I would suggest trying the following methods and check if it works for you.

  Method 1:

  Try to update the Audio drivers from the Web site of the manufacturer of the computer or from Windows Update and check if it helps.

  b. expand sound, video and game controllers.
