Satellite L20 196 how to improve performance

My L20-196 was gradually slower and slower, and now I want to do something to recover from his loss of speed. I regularly use cleaning disk and Defrag via Control Panel and currently shows 72% free space on C: my music and photo files are all stored on a separate hard drive, why so even if slow performance?

I guess it's something to do with the memory or the installation of the OS, but what are the settings that you would recommend, and where and how do I check/make changes?

The processor is a Celeron M 1.50 GHz, and it has 448 MB of RAM.

Thank you

Mark

Hi mate

The L20 is an oldie.
The CPU 1.50 GHz with 448 MB of RAM is not really good to ensure good performance.
In addition, the operating system may be dirty.

Try to clean the OS using CCleaner. He the freeware tool.
If this is not enough, try to defragment the HARD drive.
New installation of the OS might be an option too.

If you want to upgrade the equipment so you can try to increase the RAM up to 2 GB of RAM (DDR2 (533 MHz) RAM).
I guess it's max as indicated on the page of Toshiba.

  • Wanting to upgrade the CPU in the satellite L20 196

    Hello

I'm new to this forum but have owned this laptop new a moment right now. As time has passed I noticed he has aged rapidly in recent months and needs a boost of speed.
I upgraded the RAM, a matching pair to 1 GB (896 MB showing, guess that's graphic shared?), but still not quite quickly enough.

My question is, can I upgrade the processor to a Pentium M or at least a faster Celeron?
If Yes, then what is the best possible processor that will be compatible? Autour Googling, I see I'm not alone on this idea, but all the info and comments where other L20 and not my model 196 in question.
Do I have reason to believe that the limits are 400 Mhz FSB, 1.5 GHz and 478 pins for this laptop?
Finally, I replaced and rebuilt a lot of PC in the past. A laptop (my L20) is much more difficult to remove and replace a CPU?

Thank you and look forward to any comments thereon.

In General, the CPU upgrade is not supported. More info on what you can read under http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB9401AX0001R01.htm

To be clear. Your Satellite L20 is really not the best laptop and on the scale of 1 to 5 when 5 of the best, I give your laptop 2. This laptop is designed for day-to-day activities like Office, internet, watching movies, listening to music and writing emails. So I think that with the preinstalled operating system and well set to own and 1 GB of RAM, it must have enough power for this.

I don't know what you want to do with this good old classic, but if you need laptop with more power for games or multimedia activities, I think it's time for the new laptop computer.

Please don't be crazy on me because I did not offer exact answer, but I just want to be realistic and honest with you.

  • Satellite L20-153: How do I get my modem works!

I have the satellite L20-153 with a 'AC97 datafax softmodem with smart CP. I tried for 2 days so he can compose up to my ISP. I removed all DUN connections, removed the modem and downloaded all the last modem, sound and other drivers from the toshiba Web site. I still get "No dialtone".

The modem does not seem to pick up and I don't hear the tone with the speaker (speaker volume is up). If I uncheck "wait for the tone" in the modem properties, I hear it dial, but then it will beep as it waits for a response.

I also tied using the Connection Wizard in XP to choose another ISP, but the same thing happens. Are there channels additional init that I need to put in or something?

    Sorry for the long post!

    Hello

Go to the properties of the modem.
There you should find the Modem tab. In this tab, you can disable the option called Wait tone before dialing.

  • HP Pavilion dv2000 laptop (Windows XP) everything works slowly--how to improve performance?

Have AVG anti-virus, have cleared cookies and internet cache, but I think that it is a general problem of old age.  It takes a lot of time to open a program, start and some applications are unstable such as internet explore that often takes forever to load pages despite the good broadband connection, or crashes.  I noticed that the laptop itself gets very hot and I wonder if you don't cool not properly, but the slow performance occurs even when turned on recently and still fresh.  Someone can make a list of things I can do to try to improve the performance, like the frag, clear how on older programs that are no longer used without removing important factors, etc?  Thank you very much

As far as I know the control buttons are pre-installed and configured for 2 applications. If the CD has been inserted the Windows media player if poster and if the DVD has been inserted the DVD software Win will start.
With another application configuration is not possible.

But check out the Winamp site. There may be some plug-ins.

    Hello

I have the Satellite L300 but I m pretty happy with the quality of the image of the webcam.

In any case, you must change the parameters of the webcam. If you move the mouse on the side of the life of the screen that the webcam menu should appear. Then click Properties and there you can change all settings, brightness, contrast, profiles, etc..
Just a little more play these settings to find the best for you. ;)

I tried now pressed the 'Zéro' key at startup, also tried one at a time, hold down F2 and F8, F10, F12, but none of them put me in the Recovery Wizard.

I searched the help files on the PC and online but nothing helped.
Someone at - it an idea how I can get into the recovery partition it please?

    Hello

You should be able to start the installation of HARD drive recovery as described in http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD9102IR0000R01.htm

Please note: this will not work if your laptop works with the factory settings. If you have used clean OS installation HDD recovery no longer unavailable. For the installation of factory settings, you must use disk recovery DVDs.

Everything must be described in the document s user manuals.

    Hello
pls help me! I have this laptop, and I want to increase the video memory from 8 MB to 128 MB, because for the moment its share only 8 MB. How to do this?
    I am grateful for!

    Hello

the machine cannot tell what size memory it should use. He has the ability to use 128 MB. But he will not use memory that is really necessary. So if you don't play games 3D or something like that, you don't need as much memory video.

  • Satellite L20-196 - updates to the Atheros WLAN driver

As may relative novice, I ask why Toshiba have updated the version of the driver (Windows XP) wireless lan Atheros three times in the last two months? The last update 25/05/11. It would not be because it's still a beta version and it would be better to wait for a final version?

    Thank you.

    Hello

Only the Toshiba himself knows why they have updated the driver. Here it s only a user to user forum so I doubt someone can answer your question because only this is no people of Toshiba.

But why is it so important? If you n t have any problems you can forget the driver updates. This is only necessary if something doesn't work properly.
Theoretically the new drivers don t contains bug fixes and supports Atheros WLAN cards. Who knows?

  • How to improve my graphics performance of office?

I use graphics from nvidia geforce 410 m with 1 GB of memory installed on SONY VAIO VPCEG38FN runs on Windows 8 Pro 64 Bit, but while performing a side in pc info the coast is only 4.5 IE because of the weak performance of desktop driver.please graphics help me on how to improve performance in it.

It must focus on the driver that is used for your graphics card.  Machine you come with Windows 8 is installed, or does happen with windows 7 and you have upgraded to windows 8?  If the latter, it is possible that the upgrade process did not find a driver for Windows 8 and used instead of the base video driver.

Have a look in Device Manager to the driver for your video card.  If this isn't a NVidia driver, check on the web sites of Sony or NVidia for the drivers for your card. Even if a NVidia driver is installed, look for a driver more up-to-date.

    Hi mate,

  • Satellite P300 - 19 p - how to improve the graphics for Microsoft FSX?

Please could someone tell me if and how I can improve the graphics of my laptop when I run Microsoft FSX?
Of course, I could buy a good laptop with a high-performance graphics card, but is it something I can do to improve the graphics?

    Thank you very much.

    Hi Ben

First of all, I must say that Flight Simulator X needs a lot of graphics performance and this game is really high system requirements. You need a powerful CPU, graphics card and enough RAM.

Regarding your question an update of the map for example graph it s is not possible. It s fixed/soldered on the motherboard and there is no Exchange possible on desktop.
So if you want a laptop that is faster for games, you can buy a new one, like the Qosmio X 500.

You can only improve performance if you reduce the resolution of the screen or the details of the game.
Make sure also that if the last page Toshiba display driver is installed.
