Save the VMDK on ESXi - Free Edition?

Hello. I am running ESXi Hypervisor (latest version) on a HP Server with two internal disks running in a RAID 1 configuration. In other words, there is * no. * SAN or external hard disk in question.

I use this for a smaller customer. I have a couple of servers virtualized on this configuration.

What I would do is save it. VMDK file (and all other files needed to run the copied virtual machine) or an other desktop computer running ESXi or a USB external hard drive so that, if the HP server crashed, I could easily put the. VMDK in the right directory and load the operation system Windows Server for my customer.

I get VSphere, the paid version, this is thanks to its built-in features, i.e., VMotion, etc.. I'm doing this work with the free ESXi.

My question is, does anyone know of software that will:

1. either save the VMDK and other necessary files on a basis that is timed to another computer or device.

and/or

2. save the VMDK in real-time as well as to the * all time * the second VMDK file is updated and ready to go?

I check with Veritas to see if their software for it. I did copy a VMDK today as a test and admit that I'm perplexed as to how it works.

How can I copy a VMDK is used and running an Active Server? My boyfriend and I thought that this has something to do with a "shadow copy" effect of some sort. If someone wants to explain that I would appreciate it a lot.

Thank you very much for your help!

You can use something like ghettoVCB http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-8760 to create clones of virtual machines on a calendar. Many/most/nearly every commercial application requires access to the VMware APIs that are not available with the free hypervisor. Packages such as Platespin and Doubletake which could reproduce between readers, but could cost more that you could want. You can use tools like rsysnc that can replicate themselves, but not sure you would have a totally consistent replica. A regular clone would probably be the best option by using the script free ghetto.

I use the free version of ESXi 4.1 on a box of spares for a test environment.  Since the vCLI/vMA does read-only for ESXi free edition, how can I replace the SSL certificate with those signed by a certification authority?  I tried to use curl to PUT files to the server (page 172 of the Guide of the ESXi Setup), but it gives me a 403 forbidden error.  The curl command I used was:

    $ cat rui.key: curl - verbose - insecurity - u root: REDACTED-t-- https://ESXi.local/host/ssl_key

esxcli command cannot be used directly on the shell of esxi.

update in my post perivous download vcli tool and install it on your desktop or a windows server, were esxi is available.

  • How can I determine if the host is ESXi free or licensed?

How can one know if an ESXi host is ESXi free, or if it is allowed?

I searched through the crowd on a couple of different configurations and I don't see anything obvious that indicates this.  I ask because there are some features that only work on ESXi under license and would like to be able to detect the server type I'm talking about.

I guess that there is a way to do so under the ha - Manager of licenses.

    Thank you

    Eric

The method that I use to check for this in my scripts is to use the licenseManager watch ownership licenses and see if the license is equivalent to "esxBasic", the host is ESXi, if both these things are true, then you are using the free version of ESXi. In my view, there is another method in which the free version does not contain the full name of some kind, but I forgot what it was. If the above solution worked for me for some time and is simple to check

  • Upgrade to ESXi free edition to the essential

I bought VmWare Essentials.  I have 3 guests that I need to upgrade.  2 guests have ESXi 4.0 and 1 host ESXi 4.1.  I downloaded and installed the Vcenter server on a Windows 2003 64-bit, Server server and do not know what steps I have to take for my host machines.  I host machines begin from an internal USB drive and then all the VMS sit on a RAID5 with 2 data warehouses.  I want to assure you that I will not lose one of my virtual machines.  My question is just to install the new key license or do I have to download 4.1 and reinstall the USB?  Any help would be greatly appreciated so that I am using what I bought.

The addition of the license key is all that is necessary. You will lose all data.

  • The upgrade of the host, VMware ESXI 4.1

    Hello

I am running a host VMware ESXi 4.1. It seems that VMware claims now this product VMware vSphere Hypervisor (am I right?). Was it a name change purely marketing, or they introduce new functions as well? Is VSphere Hypervisor a more recent version of ESXi

Is there a tool to upgrade VMware ESXi 4.1 for newer versions (no matter if their output yet or not, just wondering about the upgrade in general)?

    Thanks in advance!

Don't worry, it's all the same. You have the same binary files for all editions of ESXi, it is only the license key that locks or unlocks features. I think that the main reason why VMware decided to call ESXi free edition "Hypervisor" was because many people were confused that ESXi is free or not.

There are two upgrade options ESXi. For the first, you must have a licensed version of vCenter Server, which offers the "Update Manager". The second is to use the command line utility "vihostupdate".

In addition, you can take a look at http://www.vm-help.com/esx41/Patching_4.1_with_the_host_update_utility.php

  • migrate to esxi free host in the cluster paid with minimal downtime

Please excuse my ignorance, I am very new to VMware and I am familiar with the concepts of other virtualization software, I used, but not some of the termininology, and maybe that's why my research are not turning to the top of what I need.

We had been using the free esxi hypervisor based to host some server hosts.  These servers are running a copy of our database and are used for reporting applications.  They are also setup with files VMDK provisioned very large and thick (> 300 GB!).  They were spread great for a year now.  However, we just bought the VMWare "vSphere 4 Essentials Plus" kit for the creation of a cluster of 3 machine, with a few redunancy and other features we wanted.  We also have a new san to go with it.  We are very pleased with the product and move to her!

On the other invited VM running on this host, (and several other hosts, its amazing to see how they arise) I stop the virtual machine and the vCenter Converter allows you to migrate the virtual computer to the new cluster.  At the same time, I would like to convert it to the thickness of a provisioning. However, because these clients have very, very big thickness provisioned HD, its research as they would take five hours or more to migrate. (other VM moved to essentially 1 GB/min)  These report servers can go without updates the master DB for several hours, but servers should always be available. I can't have them down for 5 hours. There are a lot of historical reports are refreshed by the end users.

Is it possible for me to do what follows somehow? I can't understand:

    • disable the DB update
    • closing comments, take a quick snapshot and then launch the guest.
    • While his copy running (and not updated) main and VMDK files file to the cluster (therefore only changes to files in the snapshot file)
    • on the new cluster, once copied (or during the copy) convert the VMDK to a thin provisioned (given that only about 85 GB of data is used in fact to this topic).
    • Finally, bring up new comments on the cluster at the same time I get comments on the old host (and ignore the changes that have taken place on the snapshot file, since its mainly a readonly report server)? and re - activate the DB update.

For end users who would be about 5 minutes total of downtime (basically, two reboots) which would be much easier to deal with than the 5 hours (each!) of how we are past other virtual machines would.

If the stand-alone host has the same type of CPU and family, you will be able to add it to the cluster otherwise just add to vCenter. You will always have access to other features.

  • ESXi 4.0 and 4.1 Free Edition and Jumbo frames

    Hello everyone.

    Happy new year.

Please can someone answer my question.

Extended frames are not supported in the free ESXi 4.0 edition

    This is discussed here.

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1012454

Are they supported in ESXi 4.1 Free Edition or should I upgrade to Essentials?

    Thank you very much

    James

Extended frames are supported in ESXi 4.1. http://KB.VMware.com/kb/1023990 just not in the free version, at least through the vCLI.
