Search for files by using the Start button

I've lost the ability to search for files by using the Start button.  I can enter a file name, but always get a response "nothing found".  I know I did something back a couple of weeks, but don't know what I did to turn it off. Help!

Thank you!

Take a look at my search installation tips.  If you are in these settings, you can make sure search is enabled and if necessary you can use the 'reconstruction' of the for button to rebuild your search system.

I'm sorry to know that have problems you with start button. As I understand it, you cannot use the button start effectively.

Method 1: perform the scan SFC (System File Checker) and see if the problem occurs.

How to use the System File Checker tool to fix the system files missing or corrupted on Windows Vista or Windows 7

Method 2: use the Microsoft Safety Scanner in full scan mode and to remove all the threats that is not detected by it and see if the problem persists.

    Microsoft safety scanner

Note: the Microsoft Safety Scanner expires 10 days after being downloaded. To restart a scan with the latest definitions of anti-malware, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.

  • Search for files based on the flow

Hi, I would like to be able to search for specific files mp3 and m4a files based on their bitrate, IE search for files with a bitrate to 128KBit.

I don't know, but is it possible under Windows Vista, or do I need another tool to do?

    Thank you

    Hello trotskyicepick,

Windows Search does not include a searchable property for the bitrate, but Windows Explorer can indicate the rate on view Mp3 files.  For example, you can sort and filter the search results by bit rate and group your files in this way.

For example, if the files in question are in your folder of music and its subfolders, click music in the left pane of Windows Explorer.  Now paste this query into the search engine:

    ext:MP3

Now, right-click on a column heading in the right pane and add the property of spleen in the view. Click the bitrate column header to sort the display rate.  Now click the drop down menu on the same header and choose "near CD quality' in the list.  This filter the search results so that only files recorded to 128 or more appear.

Unfortunately, the Vista does not support the M4a format, so speeds of transmission of these files are not visible in Windows Explorer.

  • The search box is missing in Windows Explorer and the search is not available from the Start button on the desktop

I want to search my hard drive for a file.

I open explore and there is no search box, or all the options to search.

I click Start.  There is no box that allows me to type in the name, I'm looking for.

Any suggestions on what setting or service may be disabled or stopped which disables the search options?

Hi jhblzk.  The name of the service is Windows Search, but even if it has been disabled, you should always see the box "search programs and files".  No harm to check though.  Press the Windows key and r on your keyboard and type:

    services.msc

and click OK.  Scroll down the page until you find and make sure that the startup type is set to automatic (delayed start) and the service status is started.  If this is not the case, click on start and OK your change.

If the service does not exist, go to programs and features in Control Panel and click on "turn Windows features turn on or off.  Scroll down and check Windows Search.  OK, your changes and restart.  The search box appears when you click Start now?

  • Is it possible to search for applications while using the App Store of Win8?

Seems simple enough for me. I saw one can perform a search using the browser, but what's the point of that? With the help of two applications to perform a task. If I wanted to work on a formula for drinking water and I'd get an abacus. Ridiculous. If it is possible to search in the app how is it possible to find?

    Quite frustrating, IMO.

Yes, from the beginning, click on store, when the store is in the start menu by typing what you are looking for.  Hope this helps and if you need any additional aid station and we will be happy to help you.

  • Searching for files and rename the file

In my C:\, I have a number of files, namely C:\myfolder1, C:\myfolder2, C:\myfolder3... and in each folder, I have several text file *.txt.

I want to have a code that go all C:\myfolder* and rename the text in file bin, for example. ABC.txt to the abc.bin.

I know I can do this easily by using the command line. But how can I do this in LV?

Essential is to know how to go through all the myfolder? *

To my knowledge there is no direct function to rename, but you can do this by moving the file and stick with the target file. See the attached example.

  • Windows 7 can search for files containing a specific string that includes punctuation

  • Task Bar frozen without access to the Start button.

I recently made an update to the driver on a Thinkpad W7 Pro running. After the final reboot, the taskbar is frozen and I can't left or right click on the task bar icons. I tried a reboot to safe mode, but the taskbar is frozen in this mode as well. Most of the listed solutions run in the Forum need by using the Start button to access the menu or command. What can I do if the only thing I can do now is to run the program icons on my desktop?

    You are welcome.
