Service packs how do I need?

I have Windows XP and an old Dell tower which was given me already setup. I looked at the list of programs installed and how much Service packs you need? What I keep and what I remove? MSXML 6 (KB973686) MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB973688) MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB954430) then theres Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 SP 2,3.0 SP 2,3.5 SP 1. As do I and what can I delete? It also has Microsoft Works 2001 installation Launcher. There are a lot of programs that I'm not sure. I'm no computer expert, that's why I'm here. Please feel free to stop me from ruining my PC. Thank you. jeannine420carol

jeannine420carol,
For Windows XP, you must have service pack 3.  If you click Start > right click on my computer > click on properties; that will tell you what service pack you are running.  The .net and MSXML are Windows components that use programs to run.  There are different versions of these components, and some of them have their own service packs.  Unless you know what that all programs you run need to work, then you should leave them in place.

However, given that you have received a used PC I would say recharging the system to the factory settings.  Dell should have provided recovery disk to restore the system failing factory.  If there is no any drive, it is possible that there is a partition on the hard drive containing the recovery information.  You would need to check with Dell for your specific model on how to perform a factory restore.  If you do this, then you will be a "day one" configuration on the PC and should not have a bunch of components installed.  The factory restore now is just what I would do personally.

Hope that helps.

FIRST: Uninstall Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 8 installed. Back to all the way back to Internet Explorer 6. You want other patches before you get those. Reboot after doing this.

How can I identify the name of the invisible file for a backup file successfully to an external hard drive USB2 separate?  I use Windows Vista backup program (Service Pack 2), and I need to do backups plus two from other computers on the same external hard drive.  To do this, I think I would need to identify each backup file separate I know which file to specify if I need to do a restore.

How can I accomplish this? The program does not seem to give me the ability to specify a file to which to write the backup during a given session files.  In addition, I do not understand why I can not see the file name in Windows Explorer - my files options are defined to be able to view hidden and system.  Would be grateful for any help you can provide, tonight if possible.   Best regards, Oliver for Norm

Do you if you want to run a program that uses it. You don't have to if you do not have.

However it is not bad to install if its there if you ever want to run such a program in the future. There is no downside to having installed.

  • Unable to download the Service Pack in Windows XP

I have Windows XP and download problems. It has been said that I have service pack 2 and service pack 3 required. can anyone help?

    Original title: Windows XP

If you have XP service pack 2, you definitely need to service pack 3, but that may or may not address any problem you have.

What are you are experiencing download problems and how this disorder manifests?  If you get an error message, please provide the full text without paraphrase.

Windows Update no longer works until you have service pack 3 installed.

To determine which service pack you have

    • Hold down the Windows key and press the Pause break button (or right click on desktop and select properties)
    • Examine what is listed in the system section on your service pack level
    • Note your type of processor in the computer section

Assuming that you already have service pack 2, read this first-->

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/950717

If your PC is a HP Pavilion and Presario, Media Center and has a processor AMD (see above), you must install this hotfix before installing SP3-->

  • I am trying to find a downloadable version of windows service pack 2-3

I am trying to find a downloadable version of windows xp SP2, im running on service pack 1, and the need to upgrade pack 3 through 2 then 3.  the automatic update will not work and the download file, I've found is IT multi users! How do the 3 pack?

Although there is mention of this multi users, individual users can use these files, too. :-)

It's not important to upgrade IE6 until AFTER the SP3 is installed.
    Here are the detailed instructions:

    1. download the installation of SP2, SP3 and IE8 files. I prefer to keep these on a USB key, but this is optional. Here are the links to all the installation of three files:

    http://www.Microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?ID=28 (for SP2)

    http://www.Microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?ID=24 (for SP3)

    http://www.Microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&ID=43 (for IE8)

And if you wish, download the Setup file of a good anti-virus program. I recommend Avira free Antivirus:

    http://www.Avira.com/en/Avira-free-antivirus

    2. disconnect Internet.

    3. temporarily disable the automatic updates.

    4. install SP2. Restart TWICE.

5 install the SP3. Restart TWICE.

6 switch to IE8. Restart TWICE.

    7 install an Antivirus software.

(What happens very often is that someone has their software antivirus running as they try to install SP3, which often translates into chaos! "This is why it must be done after installing SP3 and IE).

8 make sure that firewall Windows is activated (it should be).

(Now you can physically reconnect to the Internet.)

9 visit Windows Update to download and install only the critical security updates.

10 re - enable automatic updates.

After the back if you need guidance.

  • Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD

I have Windows XP and try to use the regional and Language Options to 'Install files for the languages of Eastern aZion.' However, I said that I need the CD of Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2. It gave me this computer and do NOT have the CD. I'm really confused.

The SP2 and SP3 are .exe files, then download and burn each Service Pack for its own CD.

  • Windows xp professional service pack 1 required

I recently reformatted my hard drive and want to re install windows xp pro 2002 of the original disc.
After you start the installation from the cd, I now get a message asking for the service pack 1 cd (which I did not) and the establishment will not continue without it.
Where can I get a copy of this disc please?

    Hello

It is possible that the installation did not finish and your CD (which could be a CD of Windows XP service pack 1 installation) still needed to be in the optical drive.

In the case and the installation is really finished, what triggers this message?

You can download stand-alone service packs. Indeed, in order to get a job of Windows updates, you need to download and install these service packs...

Check your level of service current pack...

    • Hold down the Windows (between Ctrl and Alt) key and press Pause break
    • Examine what is listed in the system: section

If there is no designated service pack level, first you need to download SP2 from...

    http://www.Microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&ID=28

.. .and then run the downloaded program to install SP2 (SP2 includes SP1 and SP1A).

Once you have done this, or if you were already in service pack 1, 1a or 2, then install SP3 by downloading and running from...

    http://www.Microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&ID=24

For both of the above, you can ignore the text that says it's for network installations and also ignore the text advising windows/microsoft update if a single update of a PC.

So try and get up-to-date with the Windows updates.

I can download them, but I can not install them because I have IE6 and downloads could not connect to the server. How can I fix?

    Hi wildcar

You can go directly to Windows XP SP3 . Download and install it from the link below.

    Windows XP SP3.

    http://www.Microsoft.com/en-US/Download/details.aspx?ID=24

Ignore the text that says: it is only intended for Professional computer and network facilities.

Important note: If your system has an AMD processor, download them and install Microsoft windows update utility for the processors not intel from the link below, before you install Windows XP SP3.

    Update for Windows XP (KB953356)

    http://www.Microsoft.com/en-US/Download/details.aspx?ID=23751

After you are done you can try to install ie8 again, if it has not already been offered through windows update.
