  If you add this information on the fact that you are using the onboard sound, I would say you have a problem somewhere in the operating system with the driver, and it would be a problem in Microsoft. I had Windows 8 seem to do something very similar (not on all the machines of my friends, because I couldn't see any point to use when W7 works much better) on a computer at work, and we just put it down to 'one of those things', because it happens completely at random.
