Several versions of vmdk files

Hi, hope this is the right forum for this question.

I run a virtual machine with 4 drives virtual (in a 4.1 vSphere server), all located on the same volume (on an HP EVA 4400 SAN). Twice, the volume has become too small for this virtual machine, the virtual machine stopped and we had to increase the free capacity by moving the other virtual machines remotely and by increasing the size of this volume, until the virtual machine can be started.

It seems now that we have 3 different versions of the vmdk files and I suspect that it's only the latest version that is active and the other two can be deleted, but I would like to get some comments on it before I do something really stupid

An example: one of the disc is called something like:

servername_1.VMDK,

servername_1 - 000001.vmdk and

servername_1 - 000002.vmdk.

This is the last of them, as indicated in the properties of the virtual machine. I therefore intend to remove (or at least move to another location) the previous two versions of each vmdk file.

Any commens would be appreciated!

Hey Ke - itp,

These file names may indicate you have snapshots for this virtual machine. Do not remove these files manually! Right-click on the virtual computer object, use the Snapshot Manager to see snapshots. Remove from this menu only.

Good luck

PS will create a temporary file on a file to improve performance.

These files need disppear when you close the file.

Of course, being on a server made some confusion for PS

    It's ok to remove them.

  • How I find myself with as many vmdk files (which are almost 320KO)?

I'm new at this; Please, be gentle .

I made a new Win 7-64 company VM Workstation 8.0.5. I asked a 60 GB of virtual disk in place with several files, and I found myself with 64 vmdk files (49 of which are 320 KB).

I did the same thing a few months (on an earlier version of workstation) and 60 GB of virtual disk includes only 10 files vmdk, ranging from 1 GB and GB 28.

Why the new VM do not end with as many files vmdk more and so much smaller?

    Thank you

    David

David, although this was not really necessary, because I had already explained the plausible scenarios thanks nonetheless for the supply of the parsed data (factual) hard.  The reason why you have 64 files in the same directory hard is because the virtual machine has a 60 GB twoGbMaxExtentSparse virtual disk with a snapshot, and it is 32 hard files (for each) x 2 for a total of 64 records hard.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with this and is a scenario quite normal and expected and because it is so absolutely no sense why whatever mfelker made such a statement absurd as, "it's simply imposible t have 64 hard files in the same directory." and you can certainly security ignore this!

  • Ways to convert VMDK files

    Hello

We recently had a server crash, and I decided to rebuild the server and put ESXi 4 on it.

However, backups, I have old machines are on disks formatted in NTFS (not USB, they are in our backup machine) which means that they are unable to be mounted (AFAIK) under ESXi.

The problem I have is that the VMDK files I have are the old version so not compatible with the curernt ESXi. I know I can convert them using vmkfstools (with i - pass memory) but I have two problems with this. First of all I have to bring to the ESXi server initially, and since we look at about 5 TB of data it will take FOREVER (been running for 2 days - even far complete) and the second is even if I get them on the server, I'll need another 5 TB of disk space to convert them to , which I did not.

    So my question (s)

1 - is really not in any case to mount a NTFS (not USB) under ESXi drive - like that I could simply convert from the backup to store data (and easy) drive

    2. is there a converter of the VMDK files offline?

    3. is there a way to change the NTFS drive into a format readable by ESXi (ext3/resierfs/something) without losing data

    4. is there a way to optimize network transfers maybe?

    5. is there another solution that I could look at

    Thanks in advance

    Bob

Whoa Whoa Whoa, back up the truck.

You can use VMware Converter to do this and save yourself a TON of headaches.

First of all, what version of VMware did you use ALREADY in the VM host? VMware Server? VMware GSX? VMware ESX 3.5 - 2? VMware Workstation?

Second, do you have JUST the VMDK files? or are you support VMX files as well? If you do not the VMX, you have headaches on several levels. Converter needs the VMX file to know how many processors the virtual machine was, he had what hard drive controller, etc. to perform a proper conversion. If you do not have the VMX (and just the VMDK) files AND running ESX 3.x, you can redo the VMX file by doing a NEW VM on the ESXi 4.x server and attaching the VMDK file to it. You need these VMs as VM hardware version 4 (NOT 7), and 'best' guess as to what kind of equipment they had for the network card, card scsi, etc. This could put you in the right direction very fast and would be easy to test it on one of the smallest virtual machine if you had all tiny.

Thirdly, what you used to get backups of virtual machines before?

This might be easier to do offline, do not hesitate to email me at jonmkohler AT gmail DOT com and I would be happy to give you a hand with that. If not, put the answers here.

  • I have several versions of Firefox are installed?

I would like to install Firefox 4, but I also want to keep Firefox 3.6. I have test the web applications and therefore need several versions.

Is this possible? If so, what are the words of wisdom you can share on how to install 4 without screwing up the current installation of Firefox?

I have a Mac (OS 10.6) and Windows 7. I prefer to keep 3.6 on both, but only need to install on a 4.

You are 10 security updates behind - 3.6.16 is released yesterday.

Mac is only one version of Firefox at the same time.

Windows = install Firefox 4.0 by using the Custom Installation, in a single folder named option - as /Program Files/Firefox 4.0 /-don't let not run 4.0 after the complete installation procedure.

Create a new profile exclusively for version 4.0 beta and create a shortcut on the desktop with Pei 'profile' attached to the target to launch this profile.

  • Several versions of TestStand (2013 and 2016)

Are there problems of having several versions of the TestStand development environment installed on my development machine? Thank you.

    Hi stephenb2,

There is no problem with having multiple versions of installed TestStand. There are a few things to keep in mind though.

Only one version of TestStand engine can be active at a time. Use the Version TestStand selector to change the active version. Sequence of files created in TestStand 2013 can be opened in 2016, but not vice versa (although you can save as a previous version if you wish). Finally, you have separate directories for each version, so make sure you know what directory/version, you are working in.

    Hope that helps!

  • Constraints with several Versions of Windows 7 (32 & 64 bit on different drives)

I had 32-bit W7 on a SSD and 64-bit on a HARD drive with the window "select the version" appearing before the logon window.  It was working fine since I mainly used the 32-bit version.  I added a disk emulator to test is to write the ability and the first thing that appears is the crawl "Add programs" and when he did not stop for about 2 minutes I 'reset' the machine.  I was not able to start the 32-bit disk or even start the 64-bit version if the SSD is installed.

I know that Microsoft has some very strict conditions for the execution of several versions of Windows on the same machine and am concerned I have violated one or more and last crazy trying to recover the files of the SSD.  Is there a way out of this or my SSD's is just like a chance at the wrong time and I really need to find a way to get the files and applications (other than W7 32-bit) on the SSD?

I thought I had a "back-up of the SSD on my RAID 1 array but can't find it."

    Hello

You have two licenses of Windows 7?

If you have a license of Windows 7, you can install the 32-bit version or the 64-bit version, not both.

    See you soon.

  • Webworks projects and several versions of blackberry

    Hello html5 developers webworks

I created a test project helloworld webworks using the latest sdk webworks. Now I have problems loading on the playbook Simulator .bar file, but using the dev alpha 10 Simulator it is no problem at all.

My question: I am webworks projects worked on all blackberry devices? What I have to have all versions of the sdk and build each project separately or is this something that will resolve itself once I have signed my projects and download them on the blackberry appworld?

Also, I have to use the command line to build my projects.

You are right. App World, you create a product that can have several versions. For each new version, you can download another file BAR and specify exactly which versions of OS/device/carrier you want to target with this version.

  • Registration of an application in several versions JDE

Basically, the situation is I develop an application that needs to support several versions of BB OS with a few changes in the code for the 4.7 + OS versions so I can't build and sign just to a JDE.  I already have the COD file for the new version of project signed by the JDE 4.7 and which works very well to register and download the cod on the device.  Now, I want to sign the older code base in the JDE 4.2 on the same computer.  I didn't think there was any way I could use the same signature keys since its technically a different cod of the file even if it is the same, so I bought another game.  I actually like 5 JDE versions installed on this computer to test different simulators, if Im not sure how the signing tool decides which version to open the files with the ITUC.  When I double click on one of the keys to the new it says the usual 'private key could not be found would you like to create a new key pair.  It somehow he seeks the JDE 4.2.0\bin which is be the JDE I want to use, but I'm not sure how she won just one, perhaps because it was the last installed?  Anyway, I click 'Yes' and nothing happens.  I can't get an any of them to go beyond this dialog box.  Is there some conflicts that he doesn't know what JDE to launch to create the key pair with?  How can I get different files COD, signed different d on the same computer?

You can sign any number of cod files using a signing key.  And it doesn't matter what signing tool you use.

I have an icon on my desktop that starts the signing tool, I just navigate to the directory that contains the cod I want to sign and treat them regardless of what JDE, I used to create them.

  • Reset cbt - cannot get rid of the ctk vmdk files

    Hi, I have a known problem with the backup of my virtual machines where I need to reset the CBT. The procedure I have the backup software is as follows;

    Solution:

Please follow the steps below to reset the CBT for a specific virtual machine.

    1. turn off the virtual machine

    2. right click on the virtual machine, click on "Change settings", find the 'Options' tab and click 'settings of Configuration.

    3. set the value of 'ctkEnabled' to false

    4. set the 'scsi0:x.ctkEnabled' to false for each disk of the virtual machine in question

    5. open the source folder and remove all - CTK. VMDK files.

    6. turn on the virtual machine

    7. power off the virtual machine again. This step is necessary to update the table of CTK.

8 turn on the virtual machine

    9 replay backup task.

So I have 2 VMs. VM1 and VM2. Both are win2k12 r2 (they are created the same day, the same way, installation of r2 std win2k12, patches, etc...). In step 5, for both servers, even if I delete the ctk.vmdk files, they are automatically reproduced so I can't delete them. Then I continued with the neverthless steps. After step 8, I saw that for VM1, has more ctk.vmdk files so that they are deleted somewhere in the process by the server itself. So my guess is that step 5 is not relevant. The problem I have is that even if I did exactly the same thing for VM2, ctk.vmdk files are never deleted. I reboot 3 times, I tried to manually remove them several times, they always, never to return, they are deleted.

So, basically, I can't reset the cbt on VM2. I double check this ctkenabled are all 'fake' (tried also uppercase) still no luck. Any ideas how I could get rid of these ctk.vmdk files?

    Thank you

Hi, proved that there was a snapshot. As soon as I deleted it, the ctk files disappeared.

    LucD

    Hi LucD,

I'm working on a script that is basically a lot of information on the whole cloud (including several clusters). The information I need is like that

Script creates a format of report (in HTML) of the resource pool, and each report represents a single pool that contains information of CPU, Mem, comments, warehouses of data, use the data store VMDK files and free space. We fundamentally need this information in order to understand the use of the customer as each pool represents each client.

But the file is actually in the folder where it is looking and he had the same name. Why can't he see the file? How can I solve this problem?

Depending on the file format of the virtual disk, virtual disk may consist of several hard files, and the error can occur because of one or more of the required . VMDK files is not being restored. If the . a VMDK file is a small text file, it must contain the names of all the -s #. VMDK files.
