SFC wants SP2 disk to repair, but I'm at SP3. Is this OK to use the disk?

Hello

When I do "sfc/scannow" I get the following message "Windows - files required for Windows File Protection is running properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions." To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these files. Insert your Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 CD now".

I had to upgrade to Service Pack 3 to install MSE. As I understand it, once you have installed SP3, you can't restore the system to SP2. I just want someone to confirm that I really should put the Service Pack 2 CD.

Thank you!

Lol you should not put the SP2 CD.

I don "t know if you can to SP2 or not since I've never used the restoration of the system (except practice), but which would have been, you can Uninstall SP3 if you want, but you will lose all the features and benefits of the version of the Service Pack 3 + year, System Restore.

Now that your question is confirmed, what can you do about it?

Once you install SP3, all installation XP CD you have with older SPs are practically useless for sfc/scannow (by themselves).

The best option is that if you have a real XP bootable installation CD with a plu SP is to make a new installation CD that has SP3 'slipstreamed' into it, so what comes out the other end is a new installation of XP you create that will be integrated into SP3.  You must already have a genuine XP bootable installation CD to do this.

What you end up with is a XP installation CD with SP3 integrated into it (and you can book your old version).  Which will make happy sfc/scannow, sfc/scannow is not for fixing problems on a system.  sfc/scannow is designed to run only once when you install XP to populate the folder dllcache with a list of 3498 system protected files which are backups in the case where a protected file come missing later on your system.  That's what all this.  It is not to solve problems, unless your problem is that your dllcache folder must be updated, or your problem is you have too much time and need to lose some of them.

While it gives a good "feeling" when sfc/scannow to runs without complaining (and you can make sure), it is unlikely address any questions you may have and are a great, frustrating waste of time (as you can see) - unless your question is trying to get the sfc/scannow to run without complaining.

If you run sfc/scannow to completion and you have all the pieces in place, it should find nothing to do.

However, even if you break your system on purpose and sfc/scannow is a file in the dllcache folder that needs to be replaced and replace it (it IS what it is), you will know about it since the only thing that you will see where the Observer newspaper is the following:

Event type: Information
Event source: Windows File Protection
Event category: no
Event ID: 64016
Analysis of file File Protection Windows has been started.

Event type: Information
Event source: Windows File Protection
Event category: no
Event ID: 64017
Windows File Protection file analysis completed successfully.

Even if sfc/scannow finds something to do, you will never know about it.  It is not his goal.  Its purpose is to populate the dllcache folder.  In the above example, sfc/scannow replaced 2 files that I've damaged on purpose for a mission of training and test, but you won't see anything about it in the newspaper.

That's why running sfc/scannow again more than a waste of time.  If he finds something to do, you don't know yet what he did.

If you don't have a genuine XP bootable installation CD, hope is not lost, but I'll let Microsoft support engineers who are hired by Microsoft experts help you with this part.  I do not think that the Department of Education will tell you about "slipstreaming" either because they probably don't know how and there is no KB article for their link, in their response.

Here is a recent example of the MSE ineptitude and lack of understanding of the sfc/scannow (soon to be marked as the answer):

I have several times also offer my professional services to teach Microsoft how sfc/scannow technical support engineers work in the hope that they will not be there when they have no idea what is the problem with a system or how to fix it.

Sorry...  I had to get that last shot - again.
